For the price, amenities, and location, Henna Hoteru Kagoshima is five stars. Affordable, satisfying bath and room, great location (near airport shuttle, buses, tram, shopping and lots of food), which they pull off by shaving off what is not strictly necessary.
The front desk self-check in works smoothly, the English setting worked wonderfully. The dinosaur and ninja "front desk staff" projected on the walls audibly gives instructions on the next step of check in while spewing odd quips to keep children and maybe adults somewhat entertained. The check in kiosk also conveniently includes a 100 yen change machine for the nearby laundry (wash and dry in one).
Laundry is 700 or 800 (80 min and 120 min) for wash and dry depending on load, less for just wash, and 200 yen for 30 min of drying.
A phone is included near the front desk to call staff if you have a problem, and at least one of the staff seems to speak decent English.
While it is a little annoying, the public bath's showers shuts off every 20-30 seconds. That said, for the price, I am glad that they could include one at all. The bath was simple, clean, no-frills, and bath products were fragrant and did the job well.
The room is designed to be space efficient - the sink slightly overlaps the tub, the closet and towel rods almost kiss the walls. No bottle water, no paper pamphlets or hotel guide - just a Japanese-language hotel guide on the TV monitor (have not found a way to switch languages, but only spent a few minutes trying). For all the space-saving measures, the room also includes a formidable clothing dry-cleaner closet that seems geared towards business travellers.
Themed rooms that are available for an additional cost seem geared towards children...
Read moreIt was an interesting experience staying in this hotel. Location is great as it's near all the eateries and there is a Donki opposite (but I would not recommend anyone going because the staffs have very bad attitude towards foreigners).
Room is average. Room size is typical Japanese style. A little cramp and not much space around. There was no space to open my luggage at all. Bedsheet came with a stain and the hotel does not change the bedsheet at all. There is a sign that mentioned if you are staying more than 2 nights, you can request for a full housekeeping for 1 of the day. I stayed a total of 4 nights and despite my multiple request to get a full housekeeping, the bedsheet was not changed at all for the 4 nights. The stain is an obvious sign that there is housekeeping at all. the only thing they do is to make your bed and clear the trash. That's all.
They do not provide any bottled water at all during your stay too.
The employees does not understand English and asking a simple question about luggage transportation, they are not sure and redirect me to a convenience store to get help instead.
Price is low but service is zero. I would have given it 0 star for service if Google allows it. The only thing saving this review is the LG styler in the room. It is very useful.
Will I return? Maybe Do I recommend? No, unless you are looking for a budget no fringe hotel.
For the same price, you can stay in another hotel with better housekeeping and get bottled water and their employees probably can communicate with you in...
Read moreUnconventional check in - An electronic samurai oversees you fiddle with the computer and passport scanner. There is a staff member to call on if you get stuck. The rooms are clean, and mine were kept tidy on a daily basis. The location was perfect for shopping, walking to the central station, ferry to the Island trail etc. For those who come in on flights - use the airport shuttle service - it stops very close to the hotel - do not waste precious money on a taxi - just get off at the Temmonken stop - when you return to the airport - you get back onto the bus at the same stop - its a round trip. Very reasonable option. All communication with the hotel was replied promptly and they were very helpful. I would unreservedly suggest you book this hotel (I used booking.com) - The breakfast that comes with the room is served in the 1st floor restaurant and the staff are very kind. Being unable to speak Japanese they took trouble to help me with the menu and used their phones to translate when I got stuck. The breakfast menu is Japanese set meals and not a continental buffet as many restaurants serve. I do not know if there is a vegan option - but having said that - being Vegan in Japan...
