Although the museum is called "Prefectural Museum," it's old, small in scale, and almost all of the exhibits are related to the nature of Kagoshima (and mostly to the Amami Islands), with few exhibits related to history or culture. It is more for children of elementary school age and younger, with exhibits such as minerals and animal fossils that they can actually touch, and depending on the date of visit, they can participate in an experimental corner. Some of the exhibits may cause physiological disgust, so visitors should be careful when viewing them. The exhibits are mainly about plants and animals living in Kagoshima and Amami Oshima, World Natural Heritage sites such as Yakushima and Amami, distribution boundaries of living creatures, and the eruption of Sakurajima. Most of the exhibits are about land animals and plants, and there are few exhibits about marine life. For example, there are no exhibits about the difference between the Osumi Peninsula and the Satsuma Peninsula. Some of the exhibits include fossils that have nothing to do with Kagoshima, so you may feel that you do not know what the purpose of the museum is. Although the museum is free of charge, it is not a place that I would recommend to visitors who are at least junior high school...
Read moreCute little museum with fauna, flora and stones from Kagoshima, which encompasses cities and mangroves, tropical and tempered climates. A wide diversity in a small, kid's friendly place. For some reason there is a huge standing polar bear at the entrance, which seems quite out of place but the rest of the (often real) stuffed animals and replica dinosaur fossils are quite...
