The people at Hanaingen could not have been more solicitous, friendly, and helpful. They were very thorough at checkin, and offered to help us out with almost anything we needed. The inn has been recently remodeled and is very lovely and modern. It is located only a few steps from the main plaza in Kusatsu. There was a welcome snack and drink, flavored waters and coffee were available at all hours, and the included breakfast was fabulous. There are four private onsen baths and they were all lovely, comfortable, and easy to use. Our room was a bit small, but well-appointed. Showers/baths are communal but the rooms have separate sinks and toilets. Unfortunately, it was pretty cold in Kusatsu for May, but our heater did not work. Also, the wifi was very spotty, but seemed to work fine on the main floor. We inquired about the heater and wifi but the night staff was not able to solve either problem, although they did bring a space heater for us. The staff apologized for the inconvenience but because it was Sunday, they were not able to fix either problem until after we left. All in all, we had a very nice stay but considering the two problems and the lack of a shower in the room, we felt it was a bit too expensive. Nevertheless, we would probably stay there again and can generally...

A wonderful little inn. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are several unique baths to use from. A bean to a heart. They are shared but private in that any guests can use them but you don't share.

I had a room. In the inn itself which was nice small room that smelled divine. The bed was nice and confortably of a western style.

The people I was travelling with got the room with private bath. I got a look in side. It was very impressive. A large space enough for a whole family. The furniture whilst not to my style was good quality, appeared to be more of a honeymoon thing. The price of the room was less then double my room but the private bath and the space would really aren't more.

The room came with a welcome snake with treats fromt here store which were lovely. We also had breakfast, more Japanese style with plenty of delicious beans, not my style but really nice.

Well worth staying here if you are...

We stayed at Hanaingen ryokan for two nights and loved it! We were greeted with a welcome drink of fresh matcha tea 🍵 we got to mix ourselves with Japanese sweets. The rooms were spacious with beds complete with super comfy, soft mattresses and in the larger rooms there is a small sitting area with table. Rooms have their own toilet and small sink and there are 4 (!) different private onsen tubs you can use all day/night. So no worries about tattoos. The included breakfast was wonderful and Japanese style the first day then Western style the second. Service was impeccable with clear instructions given via written English at checkin and one staff member who greeted us each morning at breakfast who spoke excellent English. Location cannot be beat as it’s just a 5 minute walk to the central town square. If we ever go back to Kusatsu we will definitely stay here again!

What a wonderful stay! We appreciated the welcome treats. The room had a private toilet, fridge, and two very comfortable beds. The private shower/baths are downstairs. There are only 4 shower rooms with 6 guest rooms, so it is possible they may be occupied. We were fortunate to have a short wait for the shower & bath. The water felt great! We especially loved the breakfast. Everything was delicious. There was a lot of food. We were offered seconds of rice or miso soup, but we were already satisfied. We had concerns over the shared bath, but it was clean and they have a good system with locking doors. Bonus was we had less than 5 minute walk to the downtown area. Lots of great dinner options nearby. Parking is next to the hotel. We have lived in Japan for over 6 years, and this is one of our favorite stays. The hosts are wonderful!

I would come back to Kusatsu Onsen just to stay here again. First, the staff were incredibly welcoming and considerate of my broken Japanese!! They made sure to help and repeat when needed (-: Second, the breakfasts!! I LOVED every meal--I will warn you, they are massive. However, there's a variety of servings on the plate itself as well as between days. Highly recommend staying multiple days just to try the various meals! Lastly, the private baths were phenomenal. Clean, warm, and almost always open. There are multiple to choose from, I'd say the heart was our favorite. Make sure to look up bath rules if you're a foreigner! Overall, highly recommend staying here for multiple nights. Kusatsu was a delight to explore and hike around, but returning here was always our highlight of the day.
