Kikokutei is such a lovely gem in Kyoto it makes me not want to leave. I stayed here for 5 nights and really enjoyed my stay. Everything about the hotel is simply perfect. Let me list out all the wonderful attributes of the place:
Design and amenities The entire hotel is so beautifully and artistically designed with earthly colours that makes the place very relaxing. Amenities are top notch from the Uji Matcha from Tsujiri to the Mikimoto toiletries that keep your hair and skin nice and moist.
Location It really is less than 10mins walk from JR Kyoto station and right next door to Shosei-En with its amazingly beautiful gardens.
Cleanliness I’m extremely particular about cleanliness and I can say this hotel is really spotless. I came into the room once while housekeeping was still cleaning the bathroom and I can say that the lady scrubbed the floor cleaner than I do at my home.
Rooms Each room has a different design but all are beautiful with a good layout that makes sense.
Staff This must be the top factor of this hotel because the staff are all so helpful and go out of their way to make guests comfortable and assist with all requests. Though the hotel does not have many staff, you never ever find it hard to reach anyone. And you are always greeted with a warm smile whenever you leave or return, making it feel so homely. I would like to thank Ms DeCamp for helping me with all my requests (including running out to buy milk that I wanted) and I really enjoyed talking to her. In fact, every staff has been so wonderful but I do not know all their names. Also thanks to housekeeping for making me feel so comfortable with its level of cleanliness.
So yes, despite having stayed at several Kyoto hotels including top brand names, Kikokutei will be my choice hotel whenever I’m back in Kyoto. Thank you for making my stay so comfortable and giving me a place like home...

Read moreThe rooms are lovely, and the hotel is located a quite convenient location. However we ran into an issue.
Our initial plan was to stay for just one night. We decided to extend our stay by another night when we arrived. The reception said we would get a room with the courtyard garden for the second night (which is same the kind of room we booked for the first night). However when we checked in on the second night, we got a different, downgraded room that faced the street, without a garden view. The price charged is also different from what they showed when we booked the room on the first day (they charged less, but we were totally fine with paying more for the better room). When we asked the reception, they provided no explanation but “apologies, it was miscommunication”. We were quite disappointed with the experience.
There were also small hiccups with the room service, such as missing bottled water, pajamas, etc. in the room. With the price of the hotel, I would expect more...
