This a really great option for travelers looking to stay in a ryokan without spending too much money! The location is good, in walking distance of Shijo Dori, Gion Corner, and the Kiyomizu Dera. The staff are extremely friendly and kind. I was greeted with hot tea, travelers maps, and first hand descriptions of how long it takes to get to points of interest. Since I arrived a few hours early, they took my bags to my room before check in so I could explore Kyoto luggage free. ||||I purchased the breakfast one morning and it was very satisfying! Nice presentation, variety, taste, and portions. It was possible to purchase the breakfast per day for 1080 yen, which I was thankful for because I wanted to try the breakfast, but didn't want to dedicate so much time to a sit down meal every morning. There are vending machines in the lobby and right outside. You are given a thermos of hot water and tea packets every day.||||The room was large and the futon was made daily. The previous reviewer noted mosquitoes in his room, but that reviewer failed to mention that the rooms have mosquito killer/repellent devices on the shelves, so the owners are trying to get rid of this issue. Also, I only noticed one mosquito in my room during the several days I stayed there. The shared bathroom (separate male and female) is okay with the showers, but there was some debris/dirt in the corners of the bath. The establishment is very quiet and peaceful.||||Overall I'd really commend this place! It's a good establishment and the staff is very...
Read moreWe reserved a room here for 3 adults and 1 baby. We arrived early to drop off our luggage and change our baby's diaper after a short sightseeing trip. The staff was very accomodating of our request to use their facilities before check-in time.
Pros The ryokan has a 50+ year feel, a perfect image of old Kyoto if thats what you're into.
2.Price. In comparison to other accomodation nearby, near unbeatable. Otherwise it's capsule hotels if you want anything more cheaper
3.Location. located between a train station and kiyomizu-dera. 10mins walk to Gion-Shijo area. Very good.
4.Food. we have religious diet restrictions. We informed them on our check-in for our add-on dinner + breakfast. The staff was very accommodating and adjusted our meals accordingly. Besides that, we think their food very delicious especially considering the price. Traditional Japanese style kaiseki meals in the meal hall.
Cons Facilities. Toilets are on sharing basis but that's expected of an oldstyle ryokan. Unfortunately it's definitely visible that the ryokan is old and in need of repairs/renovation. The floors are squeaky but they provide earplugs for sensitive sleepers. I write this to inform others but condition of the building definately make you feel like you're back 100years in old kyoto. The sento shower halls are new though.
I'm writing this lengthy review for the place because I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and a bit worried that customers are not coming their way after the pandemic. Please consider this place on your next...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at Yamamoto Ryokan on our recent honeymoon for 5 nights. We arrived late and wet from the rain and the staff were so welcoming. They immediately took our bags, sat us down and brought us traditional Japanese tea. While they readied our room, one of the staff members came and gave us various maps and tourist leaflets in English. He showed us the local area and explained where the best restaurants were, which was ideal because we were hungry and had no idea where to start looking. He then carried our bags up to our room and gave us a quick tour of the Ryokan. |Even though we were expecting the shared bathrooms, we were a little apprehensive at first to bare all in front of strangers! However, it was rainy and cold for most of our stay in Kyoto and the baths were the most lovely, relaxing way to warm up when we got back to the Ryokan after a long day of exploring. Shared bathing is such a big part of Japanese culture, and so normal to the Japanese people, that it's not at all uncomfortable or strange to share the bathroom. |The futon beds were comfortable and made for us every day while we were out. We always had tea and a flask of hot water in our room. |The staff we so kind and welcoming, every time we came back into the Ryokan someone would greet us and hand over our key personally. When we left we were given some chopsticks as a souvenir. We are so thankful to the staff for such a warm and friendly welcome, we had a really great time. I can't recommend Yamamoto...
