My family and I stayed at the Meritin for one night. Due to safety concerns, uncleanliness, and poor service, we were unable to stay there and were forced to check out early as possible. We only stayed the night because it was too late to move to another hotel.
Below is a list of the issues we encountered during our brief stay at the Meritin: -The placard in the room stated the hotel advises against leaving any possessions even in the safe in our rooms, which made us feel the hotel is unsafe -They require a RM100 deposit and there was a list of prices in the room for items if they are "missing" (like the TV). You also have to sign a Notice document upon check-in stating they will take the deposit if you don't follow their rules. This makes it feel they do not trust their guests and is more evidence of an unsafe environment. -There were gouges in the door that looked like someone had tried to force entry at some time -The bedding was damp in both beds in one of the rooms, which was extremely uncomfortable -There was a strong sewer smell in the bathroom and a cockroach in the other room. -During check-in, the concierge was rude, unprofessional, and unhelpful (young man dressed in a hoodie) -The walls are extremely thin and the hallway smelled strongly of smoke -Throughout the night, there was a loud party atmosphere outside with people yelling and motorcycles racing in the alley below our rooms. This made it very difficult to sleep (not the hotel's fault but something guests should be aware of). -The breakfast was bad. The hard boiled eggs looked quite old. -Upon our checkout, the hotel staff seemed aware of the issues we reported, which have been ongoing and unresolved
Due to this terrible experience, we were forced to check-out as soon as possible to seek out safe, comfortable accommodations in order to still have a pleasant vacation. It's a mystery how this hotel is so highly rated across platforms. We did thorough research and were...

Let's talk about price. I know as travelers, we want our accommodation to be clean, safe and comfortable at an affordable price. As someone who frequently books hotels for my clients visiting the city, Meritin is the best option out there. Trust me, I have scouted every hotel in town.
Why is this so?
Let's start with the design and vibe of this place. This place feels really clean and modern from the start - so it's great for international guests to feel at home. Yet as you get to know the place better, you start to see little designs here and there that gives you a sense of the local vibe. Very thoughtful.
Speaking of the local vibe, I can absolutely vouch for the hospitality of the staff here. Time after time, my friends and clients gave me feedback that they were treated really well by the team at Meritin. I personally experienced this myself when I stayed there with my partner just for a quick getaway. They truly have a heart of service which really differentiates them from the other places in Kuching.
Location wise, it is right in the center of the city. As it is located on the historical Padungan street, there are plenty of great food options, halal and non-halal. Again, just ask the front desk for any help you need. Usually, my clients love this place because of how near it is to the attractions in town. Other than the small foyer area (important point to consider for group travelers), it is very convenient to pick up people here and go straight and explore the city.
What else more do I need to say other than - staying in Meritin is a 5 star experience. If you are planning to travel here, don't overspend on fancy hotels. Choose this place so you have more resources to explore what our beautiful Kuching city has to offer you .. you won't...
Read moreThis hotel is situated at a very superb location. You may find varieties of food eateries and cafes for your daily meals; souvenirs such as packed food, cookies and beverages); as well as local attractions such as water front, and cat statues; all within walking distance.
This hotel was established in 2017. However, it was renovated in 2022. Therefore, during my recent stay, it was really new, bright and clean. The room is not very big, but it is full with our basic needs for short-term staying.
During my stay, I found that the quantity of toilet paper and tissue paper were not enough and the housekeeper sent it to my room upon which I made a request at the front desk. I really appreciated their quick response on this.
For front desk service, I believe the specialty I need to highlight here is that at least one front desk staff can speak mandarin. It is very convenient for those visitors who are mainly of Mandarin speaking background. Anyhow, bear in mind that the hotel is located at Jalan Padungan, one of the “China Streets” in Kuching. Therefore, hotel management can expect there are a number of “native-of-mandarin-speaking” travellers to stay in this hotel.
Besides, I need to point out the “imperfects” of this hotel. First is regarding breakfast. The food varieties for breakfast in fact are very basic. It cannot beat the foods nearby. I would like to suggest a daily local food theme so that the cafe where the breakfast is served can become an attraction for hotel guests. Second is regarding the parking, it is perfect if the management can provide parking for the guests. The current practice is that guests can park their cars at public car parks where the quantity is...
