When I was in Penang for a week, I stayed at the Loop on Leith hotel and coming back each day made me miserable.
GENERAL LAYOUT For the same standard (e.g. king-sized bed), you could get rooms of wildly different shapes and layouts. The hotel itself has a weird, irregular shape (see attached image of the floor plan; hearsay the building here before this was a parking structure) which makes me think they just tried to cramp in as many rooms as possible when building this space (which is probably why parking is so difficult).
ROOM LAYOUT As for my own room (king-sized bed), I think I got unlucky with the Loop on Leith roulette because my room was extremely small. My friend and I had to lift my luggage over the bed to get it into the other half of the room. There were barely any empty surfaces for us to arrange our items, and if there were they were on one side of the room only, meaning my friend and I had to squeeze together to share the space. There was a clothes rack, but it was next to the door and taking up unnecessary space, and only 2 hangers between 2 people. There was a tiny sofa also cramped into a corner of the room, but mine was very badly stained, and the accompanying table was rocky. It gave me the impression that the Loop on Leith is spread so thin that they cannot pay attention to details like this. Worst of all, we had a NON-WINDOW! And I don't mean that our view was bad like facing a wall, but that the window led to an inside chamber of the building, like a fake showroom. So whether it was 7am in the morning or 7pm at night, there would be zero sunlight, zero views, just a brick wall, and what looked like the window of ANOTHER ROOM. Wifi wasn't reliable in the rooms.
CLEANING SERVICES Cleaning service was also very poor. Our bedsheets were stained, and the same bedsheets were reused day after day for the whole week. The first day we stayed, the staff had forgotten to leave fresh towels in the room, and when we approached the front desk they barely seemed surprised. The rooms were so small that it was unlikely the staff did any cleaning at all besides re-tuck the sheets and replace the towels – after all, I could barely enter my room myself!! I got rashes at one point from the dust. The water bottles they replaced daily came covered in mud/dirt/stains at one point, likely from wherever they stored it, and if I were to really nitpick, the water tasted bad as well.
BATHROOM My shower head broke off while I was showering. Also, the drain in the shower was placed towards the shower door rather than towards the inner wall, which made zero sense to me: if I weren't careful, the water would leak and flood the whole bathroom. The water hose next to the toilet was leaking. The toiletries they provided were so stupid: the hand soap came in a squeeze bottle with a twist cap, and the hand soap, shower gel and shampoo and conditioner all had the same scent and consistency; I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same product repackaged. Also, some days we would come back to more soap tubes, some day less, like they would give us more and then take it away. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even replace soaps between guests. Also, it appears that you only get dental kits if you're staying in a certain tier of room, because my friend and I definitely didn't get any.
OTHERS Breakfast was ok and the staff were nice. The rotation was just very limited (very vegetarian-friendly for example, no meat), and for non-guests I don't think it's worth paying just to come eat. Security was good (you could only tap to go to your own floor). The lobby was always crowded, because it seems like Loop on Leith profits off of having a constant inflow of guests who all enjoy a short and shitty stay. Barely any other amenities.
All in all, don't stay here. Quality falls far below the price. I have low standards and I love leaving positive reviews wherever I can, but Loop on Leith lacks basic...
Read moreStayed here for 5 nights. I actually had booked new hotel around Georgetown when few days before my departure that I found this one. It looks good and price is more reasonable with breakfast included.
I made reservation through hotel website which was actually much cheaper till then I realized upon my arrival, what was written of tax included-is not.
Going back and forward to Singapore where $ is higher than RM. I feel the charges are okay. It is better for them to edit what has been written in the website.
I chose buttermilk deluxe and upon arrival I got upgraded but then the room was cramped. While talking with the manager the next day, I asked for the possibility for bigger room. He was kind enough to let me change to bigger room for free of charge. Well, actually the price it self was not that much big of different. Choose for 'premier' if you want bigger room.
I stayed in twin bed room for 3 pax. I made sure about this before I booked, if that was okay. They gave me permission. I don't have to play hide and seek with hotel staff.
We can pay 15RM for additional breakfast which is great value considering how tasty the food is. Always eat the superb curry noodle, apam balik and the sweet flavour of their coffee. I have to make sure if they put sugar -not- in their coffee since the taste is addicting.
Room is excellent in term of things inside. The bed is excellent, you sleep and you are too lazy to wake up. Soft pillow of 4 have been provided. Shower is excellent. Amenities have been provided.
It is written shared bathroom in some of those websites (i forgot which one) so that I have to double check before I made reservation. Well, it is ensuite of course.
The area is really in the central, easy access everywhere.
The staff always cheerful and greet us.
I have no negative comments in regards to the hotel. My advice is, since it is in black nuance, better to make sure dust is cleaned otherwise as a hygiene freak myself, a supposed loyal customer will turn its back to...
Read moreThis hotel located in the center of Gorgetown which is very convenient but tourists area. The floor sign wasn’t align with the lift. For example, room 200-299 is at level 2 but you need to press level 3 in the lift in order to reach your room at level 2. We have been allocated to stay at room 2XX, however on the first night we noticed there is water leakage under the basin on the wall. Hence we seek for a change of room on the next morning, the staff were friendly enough to assist on this. After packing all our stuff and check-out the room, we went out the whole day and only came back to the hotel around 10.30pm. So we were excited about the new room. Unfortunately, the 2nd room were terrible! Smaller room, aging sofas, flooring, and walls. We then immediately ask for another room, the night shift staff were there to help and he bring us to a few rooms that is available on that night but all were actually terrible 🥺. Due to it’s late night and most of the hotel has been closed for walk-ins, so we decided to stay for another 2nights in the 1st room despite the leakage. Reason because reservation thru Trip.com will need us to send a report in order to ask for refunds. We didn’t want to hassle, so we choose to close one eye. Their rooms sound proof is kinda weak, you can easily hear people using their hairdryer when you’re walking at the corridor. The parking, OMG. Yes, there is a private hotel parking but it’s VERY limited. They only have around 13-15 spots (basement) and it get full very soon. If you choose to stay here, better come back as early as 5 or 6pm to get yourself a parking or else, park outside the hotel (roadside paid parking during office hours) - kinda hard to get because there’s foodcourt and restaurants near the hotel, we rounded around 10mins just to get a damn parking for ourselves. So, you can imagine that yourself 🙂. Oh-ya, there’s a paid parking compound nearby, but it’s RM20-40 per night 🙃. The hotel breakfast is average, but...
