I am normally very careful before I give a hotel such a bad rating, but neither the great location right in the heart of Cenang, a 3-minute walk from the beach, nor being ok for the price in terms of room size, can make up for the horrible last night I had with a friend in a Family room.||||Just because this is not a luxury hotel, does not mean one has to put up with bed bugs. ||||I was sharing one of the queen beds with a friend and both of us woke up covered in bed bugs bites (I travel a lot and know the difference between a mosquito and a bed bug bite). ||||I am not somebody overly fussy with a few insect bites, but this was just unbelievable (I am curious to know how many liters of our blood those beasts have sucked out of us considering the number of bites we had among us). ||||I attached a photo of my arm and you can judge for yourself. I refrained from posting photos of the rest of my body covered in bites to not scare you. ||||How this is even possible in just one night is unbelievable.||||The hotel, even though rather dated, had rooms which are actually not too bad for the price (the nights before we stayed in the Grand Suite with 9 persons, which was very comfortable and clean and I would recommend it for a large family on a budget), ok size and at first glance the beds looked clean too. ||||Nothing which made me think it could have been infected with bed bugs. I am not saying this was the case in all rooms, I do not know that, but it was enough for me to be in the one where we had to have the company of those bugs.||||If the bed bugs would not have been there, I would have given the hotel 3 stars, because of its great location, just a short walk from the beach and the decent sized rooms (there is small fridge in there too which is useful). ||||If you just need a centrally located hotel, a good price and are out anyway most of the day exploring, it is an ok hotel, but I would certainly not stay here on a romantic trip or for a special occasion (aircon was very noisy too, so better just use the fan). With a group of friends I think it is ok.||||Breakfast was included, but do not expect much, some scrambled eggs, some baked beans and a sad looking sausage and a watery orange juice awaits you. But there are lots of restaurants around the area. ||||However, to be fair, one cannot expect 5-star dining and services for 2.5 star prices, therefore the breakfast and the very small pool I could easily put up with and would not complain about, but for the bed bugs (at least in our room) I have zero tolerance, therefore my very low rating and extreme disappointment.||||And if you need to rely on good internet avoid this hotel or work with your mobile data plan. ||||I would not come back (even though the Grand Suite was perfectly ok for a group), there are lots of other options...
Read moreThe star is for the size of the room we had - it was a three bedroom unit. We came as we needed more space and the kind staff showed us the unit. Initially all we saw was the kitchenette, two bathrooms and large living area. Sadly we didn't take in the rest... The place was filthy. Walls had stuff wiped all over them which looked like blood. Bathroom walls equally gross. The doors had what appeared to be toothpaste. We only saw that once we moved a chair to a better place. Dirt all over walls everywhere. The whole time we were there we never had the floors cleaned, only swept. The bathrooms were never cleaned. Changed sheets and towels, added toilet rolls and swept. Thats all form housekeeping. Also there were power points in weird locations. There were quite hours but when some other people moved in and parties all night with a loud jukebox nothing was done. When I complained they shrugged and said "we tell them the rules but indian people don't want to listen". Seriously? When we had serious issues with the air conditioning and the WiFi, we were met with smiles and shrugs. We were meant to stay for @6 weeks but due to personal issues we cut it short. Wouldn't have done if it was clean and the staff fixed the issues. Nice as they were, there appeared to be no desire to help. As for the pool, it's very hot, bland and the showers dont work, not is there seating or sun shade unless you sit in the dirt. Furniture that is there is in disrepair and the dark tiles around the pool are HOT. Most of our time there they closed the pool for maintenance. Also, the Gates were shut at 7pm. No swimming after that. Sadly, our hopes were...
Read moreI would definitely not call this place a "resort". I was put in a rundown chalet with depressing dark shiny wooden floors and walls. There were cracks everywhere so all kinds of bug were able to enter the room. Mosquitoes were constantly flying in. Luckily I had lots of mosquito repellent products that I used frequently. Malaysian standards for accommodation (especially the ones they offer to Western tourists) are very low, because I saw the hotel having more appealing bungalows/chalets which they naturally offered to their own national tourists instead. But my chalet was seriously in need of renovation. It was bad. However, I have to give lots of kudos to the staff working at Shellout resort. They were professional and service minded, especially how they instantly fixed my doorlock. The 1 star is for them. But still, I this accommodation wasn't that satisfactory. I still don't understand how this is called a "resort" ?
For the same price, I would get a luxurious hotelroom in Thailand plus I'd get a nicer scenery, better food and most of all, better beaches. That's why people would much rather spend their money in Thailand. Malaysia is a hopeless case when it comes to tourism. I think...
