Riad Iklil. Good place to stay made better with the staff managers who do a long 24 hour shift. Who are always cheerful and helpful. The location is down some narrow streets and this can be intimidating as the locals seem to loiter there all the time. At no time did anything happen to us as we navigated to and from the Riad. My review of Marrakesh in general is it’s a busy place with many motorcyclists driving every where even in the markets. Some wear helmets most do not, they carry all manner of items on the bikes such as building materials and using their mobile phones while driving seems to be tolerated by the police. We did experience short changing on changing our money to the local currency Dirham and in some cafe when buying drinks, we let all of these go as I think it may be normal practice. We did not leave a tip when we were short changed, you cannot have it both ways. We did haggle in the Souks markets, we walked away when we could not agree and he chased up the lane to accept our last offer. We didn’t actually want the scarf so unsure who got the better deal us at a low price or him as he got the sale. The Marjorelle gardens are worth going to but book in advance. I thought the Bahi palace in my opinion is not very interesting. We done the quad bikes. Good fun but not really a desert as you would imagine, more of gravel waste land. You can find bars selling alcohol and we went to the Kabana roof top bar, to get a drink and table in the afternoon if you want a late evening you will need to book. We did eat in one restaurant overlooking the Mosque while the prayers were being broadcast while drinking a Moroccan brewed Casablanca beer that felt a bit weird. We walked everywhere but there are taxis on very corner if you prefer. There is poverty with people selling tissue on the streets. The night market is worth going at night as the atmosphere is better. Locals are willing to help but expect to be paid for any time of help. Airport is slow when landing as they check passports they also want address of where you are staying and your job. Going home you must still check in even if you only have carry on luggage we went with Ryanair and they checked every bag fits if the case size frame and weighed bags. Would I go back. I would not but I enjoyed my...
Read moreAt the time of booking, we requested the possibility of an early check-in (to which no one ever responded), and we mentioned being interested in some of the activities offered by the riad. We wish we had never done that!||||As soon as we arrived at the riad, we were told that the reserved room was unavailable due to a bad smell (which sounds a lot like an excuse for overbooking!) and were forced to stay at another riad (Riad Teranga, where, on the contrary, the staff was particularly kind and attentive). Additionally, we were held for over 40 minutes and threatened to choose the dates and pay in advance (of course, only by cash!) for all the activities we had merely expressed interest in. Feeling practically held hostage and just for being “released” and to find a compromise, we agreed to participate in only a few activities, including the taxi service for the arrival (which we had already used) and for the departure, which we hadn’t used yet.||||The night before our departure the riad informed us that the taxi service for our departure was not been paid and that we would have to pay (for the second time) directly with the taxi driver.||||Of course, we tried to ask for explanations, but, unsurprisingly, we have not received answer either by phone or in person, despite ringing the doorbell for over 10 minutes (we could hear people talking inside, who then literally disconnected the doorbell!).||||Finally, they even attempted to cancel the Booking reservation as a “no show” (!!). Fortunately, we promptly informed Booking during our stay, and they will take the necessary actions.||||I believe that the beauty of places is, as too often happens, spoiled by the behavior of individuals who, thinking they are acting cleverly, achieve the opposite result.||||I hope this review helps future visitors stay away...
Read morenot a 5 star hotel but we experienced a 5 star treatment. indeed superb.
service was the best. we were super troublesome hotel guests but we didn't feel like it at all because they were so nice about it. we reached at 11pm because of the delay in our Sahara desert tour but were received warmly. we were hungry, and wanted to order delivery. the receptionist (hamza) gladly let us use his number to order it instead - and was so nice to collect it for us and deal with the deliveryman since we didn't understand Arab. Hamza also helped us print our boarding passes. and guess what? they also clean the room every single day! (thats so unexpected!!!) they also borrowed us 10 EUR when we were out of cash!
when we first came, we were pestered by the locals to give them cash for a 5 seconds direction (please beware of them and not accept their directions if you are reaching the hotel at night since they tend to loiter around there). we were quite scared afterwards and Mariam offered to ask hamza to pick us up everytime we go out at night. superb! and she replies so fast - I am so wowed.
it's located in the heart of the medina! though it seems like it's in the alleyways, that's how all riads in Marrakech work!
the room was super clean and the toilet was HUGE. Hot water was abundant - which was something we didn't get in our 2 other riads.
love this place. highly recommend. felt like I got more than what I paid.
(P.S. if the next day you feel like your items went missing, no they aren't. The service staff were just so cute to put it inside the wardrobe and drawers for you to prevent it from being dirty! So just check there!)
Love...
