I wouldn’t recommend staying here. While it’s not located in Thamel but about a 15 minute walk away, the walk itself isn’t pleasant at all.

The place is right next to a football field, so expect loud noises from early in the morning. Kids were already playing at 5:30am (yes 5:30am) and there was loud music as well.

The room felt old and wasn’t clean. There was no AC, even though it was advertised online, and the fan was extremely noisy. I had to ask them to change the carpet (which was honestly disgusting).

The Wi-Fi didn’t work properly, and the common areas didn’t feel inviting, there really wasn’t anywhere comfortable to be outside the room. The area around the property also didn’t feel nice, mostly surrounded by slums and there’s no restaurants or anything interesting around.

In the morning, there was no running water in the shower, and to make things worse, the bathroom window faced the football field. The window was broken and couldn’t be closed, and there was no curtain, so I felt very exposed taking a shower.

When I arrived at 4pm, the room still wasn’t ready and there was a strong smell, I even asked the owner to check that.

The whole place felt messy. I didn’t feel like the owner was being honest, when I mentioned the issues in person he said something and then through messages something else. Probably to don’t get the blame from third-party platforms like Agoda and when you see the negative reviews here he always answers with “I couldn’t find any booking on your name so please don’t review my place” which is probably not true. I am posting pictures just to prove I stayed there.

There are plenty of much better places actually in Thamel, more central, cleaner, and surprisingly even quieter than there.

I really didn’t feel comfortable during my stay and wouldn’t return and wouldn’t...

The motive for staying here can only be that it is outside of the busier Thamel area, though I still wouldn't choose it. The price is the same or more than the much better hostels such as Yog, Big Tree, Rest-up etc. The dorm room was windowless, and so tiny that the door could only open 40% before hitting the lockers. The ladder to the bed is broken, so it swings like a sailors mast, and there was thick dust on the metal bed frame. When I arrived there was no toilet paper in the bathroom (though it was added later) nor was there hot water, though thereafter there was. They lock the gates at around 20:30 so you have to shout to get back in, and once again, if you wake up at 06:00am you have to shout and wake them up to get out again. On my departure day I had a bus to Chitwan and wanted to leave at 06:00, but of course there was a huge fuss as the night guy wanted to check if I paid to let me go! I had paid, though it still took 10 minutes which probably woke others up too. During my short stay they make the beds daily for everyone, so your belongings get strewn around the room even if they were neatly on your bed. I had printed an entire itinerary too for an embassy visit which I left on my bed and found crumpled on my return. They did offer a welcome drink on arrival which was a tasty Masala tea, and the manager seemed enthusiastic, though from extensive experience through 12 years of solid travel, I really can't believe this place deserves a true 9/10? I just don't see this as legitimate. Given my experience and that it is equally priced but further away from the centre with lesser facilities, I would be...

If you're looking for a peaceful and welcoming place to stay in Kathmandu, Gurung’s Home is the spot. It’s quiet enough to escape the hustle and bustle of the city but still just a short walk away from the lively Thamel area. The best of both worlds, right? The owner is an absolute gem. Not only is he incredibly friendly, but he also made me feel like part of the family from the moment I arrived. One evening, he even treated me to some homemade strong liquor (I’ve forgotten the name, but let’s just say it definitely gave me a warm feeling inside). The man’s hospitality knows no bounds, and he always takes the time to chat and make sure everything is perfect during your stay. The place is spotless, and the garden is a great spot to hang out and meet other travelers. I ended up making a lot of new friends here. The staff are all super helpful and genuinely want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. I can’t recommend this place enough. If you're in Kathmandu, stay at Gurung’s Home. You won’t regret it. And guess what? I’m definitely coming back next time!
