Read moreWe stayed at Hotel Marshyangdi as a part of a group travel itinerary. Intrepid Travel has an office in-house and we spent a few nights there before and after doing the EBC.
The hotel is in a very good location, if you want to stay in Thamel and be close to the tourist business. The breakfast buffet was okay, with plenty of options, but often running out and staff being too busy to notice and refill what's missing. The tables were not really wiped clean either after having been used by previous guests.
The first night we were assigned a room facing a backstreet, no 115. It was tiny! There was an AC unit built in into the window which was very noisy, and since it wasn't sealed off to the street, street noise was constantly leaking into the room. The bathroom wasn't really clean and we got stains or our clothes when they brushed against the interior of the bathroom. Worse, there was an intense fish smell in the room, which was very unpleasant. We notified the reception and asked to change rooms. They informed us that they were fully booked and unfortunately we would have to stay in the fishy room. They offered to clean it for us.
We came back, and they sent up a guy holding acan of Lavender Febreeze spray. We politely declined, as it would in no way deal with the fish smell, which was seriously intense.
We went back to the reception, and now there was another staff member we spoke to. They now could locate another room and gave us no 216. It's got no windows facing the outside, only facing the inside stairwell so it's pretty dark and glum, but at least it smelled okay and was clean.
Upon return around 14 days later, we were given room 516 which was decent in size, clean, and had adequate windows.
Hotel Marshyangdi seems to be a bit hit and miss. I think they'd do well to either employ more staff for the breakfast service and they could benefit from a refresh of the interior. It's okay for a night or two if you get...
Read moreMarshyangdi Hotel experience was a highlight of our experience in Kathmandu where we stayed a total of 10 days in 2 stints. The staff at the desk was amazing, always ready to help with a wide variety of questions including buying a thermometer for me when I got sick and writing out a map to a store to find a specific type of Nepalese shirt. They were so friendly, truly engaged and listening, upbeat. Thank you Rubi and the other nice ladies! And our maid was so sweet and even did a little Nepalese dance for me after I told her I danced at breakfast with Malaysian group staying there. Another great thing was the dining room with huge breakfast provided with Nepalese food as well as granola, cold cereal, pancakes etc. My favorite thing was eating there and meeting other travelers from all over. I made new friends there from Malaysia whom I am still in contact with months later. There is a very friendly atmosphere. Oh also they gave us one of the luxury suites which was roomy, attractive, with full bathtub. You can leave your suitcases there while you travel elsewhere too which was so helpful. The bed was firm, not sure about...
