The Garden of Dreams, also known as Swapna Bagaicha, is a peaceful oasis located in the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal. It is a meticulously designed neo-classical garden that provides respite from the bustling city life and offers a serene environment for relaxation and contemplation. Built in the early 1920s, the Garden of Dreams was originally created as a private garden belonging to Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher Rana. Inspired by the beautiful gardens he had encountered during his travels in Europe, Kaiser Shumsher envisioned a tranquil haven reminiscent of classical European gardens. The garden's design reflects a harmonious blend of European and Asian architectural styles. It features elegant pavilions, fountains, pergolas, and beautifully manicured lawns adorned with various flowers, plants, and trees. The overall ambiance exudes a sense of tranquility and enchantment. The Garden of Dreams is divided into six pavilions, each representing a different theme or element. These pavilions include the Amphitheatre, the Main Peristyle, the Central Flower Garden, the Memorial Garden, the Relaxation Garden, and the Victorian Garden. Each pavilion offers its unique charm and a space for visitors to unwind and connect with nature. The garden's popularity lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its cultural significance. It has been a witness to various social events, performances, and cultural programs over the years. The Amphitheatre, with its stage surrounded by lush greenery, serves as a venue for concerts, plays, and other artistic performances. The Garden of Dreams is open to the public, welcoming both locals and tourists alike. Visitors can stroll along the winding pathways, sit on benches beneath the shade of trees, or find a peaceful spot to read or meditate. It is a popular destination for couples, families, and individuals seeking solace in the midst of a bustling city. In recent years, efforts have been made to restore and preserve the Garden of Dreams, ensuring its timeless beauty continues to be cherished by generations to come. It stands as a testament to the rich history, cultural heritage, and natural beauty of Nepal, inviting visitors to experience moments of serenity and inspiration in this enchanting oasis.

I visited this place on March 3 with two other friends. I will be honest, having to purchase the ticket for Rs400 each and then seeing the perimeter of the garden, I felt it was a bit of a let-down. But I was quite wrong. Bear with me. The place is so neat, organized, and beautifully curated. Once inside, you will suddenly feel a sense of isolation from the jostling street outside. Very peaceful, serene environment. There are two restaurants inside, serving food and hard drinks. Seemed a bit expensive but considering the atmosphere it might be worth it. While we were roaming, it suddenly started to drizzle and the drizzle soon turned to heavy rain. And then as if the whole place transformed into a wonderland. We took shelter in one of the sheds, but hardly could save ourselves from the splash (because of the wind). But it gave a different vibe to the place. There were birds, there were trees, and there was this overwhelming sensation of losing yourself in the nature. I simply loved it. I am not sure how it may have felt, had it not rained. But I am so glad that it did. It was undoubtedly one of the best and finest moments of my first trip to Nepal.

If you happen to be staying in Thamel, this neo-classical garden built in 1920 is an interesting place to spend 10 - 20 minutes in because it is difficult to find greenery or a garden in urban Kathmandu, where the air is relatively fresh. The place was crawling with cute squirrels when we arrive. This garden is huge if you compare it to the sizes of buildings and shops nearby; It is 74,220 square feet. Do note that the garden is not well-maintained and it isn't a place to take instagram-worthy photos or bask in rich abundance of floral and fauna. It was only in recent years that the Austrian Government supported Nepal Ministry of Education to restore it after decades of neglect. I happen to pass by because it is located just beside The North Face (authentic) and I don't think it is worth a special trip down. Do note that admission is 400 rs per foreign visitor (tourist). There may be more value to come in the evening because the place will get lighted up, and if you don't mind dining at the restaurant situated within the Garden of Dreams.
