The Classic Villa The Classic Villa is ideally situated within a very short walk of downtown and all of the restaurants and bars etc. Luckily we managed to grab an off street parking spot in front of the villa; unless there is another parking area that I was not shown there appears to be many more rooms than there are parking spaces, so if you miss out I guess you have to find a space somewhere on-street locally. We were warmly welcomed by the host, Steve who gave us all the info we needed. Steve and Jackie lay out cold breakfast for guests, there is no cooked option. The biggest disappointment regarding the Classic Villa for us was our room. Although pretty large with 2 queen beds, it was rather dated in style and very lacking in natural light. The walls are painted a cream colour which combine with the medium dark wood furniture to create a rather dingy 70’s atmosphere. The room did have a large window running along one wall, this was however shielded by a blind. The blind was signed “Do Not Open”, presumably because its mechanism was broken. I could not see any reason other than malfunction why guests should not open the blind and had it been possible to do so, the room would have looked a lot more appealing. Maybe the owners are saving a few dollars by not replacing the blind. The bathroom was small and again not modern however the shower was superb, very hot and very...

Read moreThe Classic Villa is perfectly located for a stay in Christchurch: easily accessible from the airport, just opposite the famous Arts Centre with its historic buildings (we recommend a guided tour) and highly recommended eateries (Cellar Door for dinner, Bunsen for coffee and cake) a few steps from the magnificent botanical gardens and all the city's attractions a pleasant stroll away (e.g. Christ Church Cathedral, the Cardboard Cathedral, CoCA: Center of Contemporary Art, the Christchurch Art Gallery). The reception at the small but excellent hotel is very friendly and extremely attentive. The breakfast is generous and filling for the day. Our room was charmingly furnished and the bathroom and WC were generously equipped. The lounges were perfect for reading and daydreaming after a day out …. We will gladly return to The Classic Villa.
