Read moreI had been warned that visiting the gallery would be a waste of time because the permanent collection had been gutted and replaced with a few small paintings and nothing of consequence. The descriptions were accurate. I was heartbroken by the absence of the great paintings that have inspired me and others over the years. Why would a tourist want to visit a gallery that showcases nothing of Christchurch or NZ. Galleries in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Auckland proudly display their great local, national and international paintings from all periods. I would be embarrassed to recommend our gallery to overseas visitors. The Little River gallery beats you hands down, and I recommend it to friends. I'd rather see my rates redirected to fixing potholes than wasted on a shell of a gallery. If I could, I wouldn't have even given...
Read moreWow, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū has curated a simply magnificent collection! From Goldie, right through to (my fav) Christopher Dresser - the founder of industrial design. Really wonderful to be introduced to new female artists from the past, given women were overlooked at the time, and female artists didn't get the accolades they deserved. The staff were responsive and happy to share their knowledge. The Te Wheke: Pathways Across Oceania exhibit, had some breath-taking pieces, Ayesha Green's artwork All of my Lovers are Immigrants was the star of the show, outstanding work. Beautiful building! I loved that from the high footbridge you can see below to the atrium. The footbridge runs between the two galleries, like it's connecting the past with the present....
