I have read many bad comments about the lady at the reception and I think we met her !! She is rude and has no compassion ! I think she should look for a position at the closest prison, she would fit better. The 4 of us arrived in the morning with all our luggage, the guy at the reception at this time was very nice but our room was not ready yet. So we had to come back later. When we did, that same lady told us she would not give us the key because we were 4 and the room was for 3 people. When we booked we were not able to mention that we had 2 kids and that they can sleep together (they are used to it as we’ve been travelling for 6 months in Asia and they’ve done it multiple times). My daughters are 4 and 9. We even sent a message to the hotel to explain it but nobody replied. But the lady was so rude and disrespectful about it that she even made my daughter cry . My little daughter thought we would not have a room for the night since the lady was just saying that she would not give us the key!! At the end she made us pay for a bed in a dormitory for me while my wife had to take care of the 2 kids alone in a room. I even saw a couple sleeping in the same bed in the dormitory so obviously they did not say they were 2 and paid just one bed…so maybe the idea is to hide a kid…that’s so stupid…
Why didn’t the guy we saw in the morning say that we couldn’t be 4 in a room of 3. He saw my kids, talked to them…so he definitely knew that we were 4 (even if the lady kept arguing with me that maybe he did not know that we were 4 or maybe that he thought just 3 would sleep here !!! That’s ridiculous). We would have looked for another hotel in the morning but when she told us that it was too late to change !! Again that’s that same lady that just doesn’t care about people and wants to make your life difficult. I am very disappointed because overall the hotel is nice for small budget like our as we are travelling one year with 2 kids and can’t afford big hotels. The rooms are nice (you just need to bring your earplugs as it can be noisy), but the experience was totally ruined by a cold blooded robot at the reception 🙁. You should really take action...

Disliked Little hard to find (entrance itself not on Hereford) with construction blockades —
Could use an extra panel heater in bedrooms (wall mounted near door?) —
Ladders a bit narrow — how about a dismount step? —
Top bunks could use more storage space such as for coffee and water etc so as not to risk spilling —
Bunk numbering not noticeable —
Zoned lighting in dorms EXCELLENT but signage required —
From common use of top sheets for privacy screening, it seems that a wee curtain for each bottom bunk would be nice. Could just clip on.
Also I feel the cold so HK gave me a minky blanket to hang around my bed for insulation :) —
Kitchen closes at 10 which is fine but the only sign is on the door, which is usually open and another guest and I were caught by surprise at 10.01. Sign more likely to be read if on the wall or table.
** Really very little to complain about. This is an unusually good hostel for Nz! NZ has a bad reputation for hospitality but this is up to...
Read moreOne of the weirdest and disappointing hotel stays in my life. Arrived at the hotel 1.30am after a late flight. Supposed 24 hour front desk was closed and abandoned. We rang, buzzed, walked everywhere; no-one on sight. I went into the elevator and pressed the alarm button; then finally out he came, looking worse for wear. All this took about 30 minutes. I asked him what he was doing; he said he'd been in the toilet. Then he tried to blame me for not phoning - which I did. Clearly the elevator alarm woke him up - who spends more than 30 minutes in the toilet? Then we go to the room and relax with the TV on. Next thing he knocks on the door telling me to turn the volume down. The volume was perfectly normal. He said he could hear it from outside the door. So I asked him if anyone had complained, he said no. Then I asked him what he was doing knocking on my door at 2.30am telling me to turn the volume down that isn't loud anyway, and no-one has complained? It's a hotel, not a private residence. Our room is right next to the elevator and obviously we hear everything from that. The walls and door is maybe paper thin. Did this warrant him knocking at 2.30am??? He left and that was over. I'm expecting a knock any moment. VERY weird night manager at this place. Maybe he thinks it's ok to just walk around banging on people's doors at 2.30am??? Not...
