Really not incredible.
The hostel, and most of the rooms, overlook a street with drunk and drugged people, and some of whom have knives. For example, one night, 2 ground floor windows were broken. Not very reassuring when you wake up. In addition to not being comfortable when going out, it is obviously extremely noisy. The single glazing, plus the fact that the windows don't close completely, makes you hear every noises in the street. To top it all off, you have to pay for earplugs. One would have thought that given the geographical circumstances of the hostel they would be made available free of charge, as is frequently offered by most hostels which are in a much quieter area, but no ($5NZD).
The room we were in was next to a heavy, slamming door. That is to say that every time someone opened it, it made the wall and the windows shake, and made a noise when it closed. We were lucky enough to be only 4 in a room with 8 beds for several nights. However, the staff crammed us into two bunk beds, instead of allowing us to take advantage of all the available space in the room.
While cooking, we realized that half of the hotplates don't work, which is quite annoying when meal time approaches and everyone is trying to cook. Added to the fact that the bottoms of the pans are, for the most part, not flat, cooking food, even the most basic ones, can take time.
The staff, young and unprofessional, takes up a lot of the common space. During their breaks they sleep on the sofas, which are already not very numerous for the number of customers, while they can go to their room. During their meals, they take up half the table and have loud conversations, as if we were in a bar. We almost felt like we were disturbing them with our presence. In addition, their friends/former colleagues enjoy the hostel services (excluding rooms) without paying. Obviously, it's impossible to talk to a manager about it because we don't know who it is/he may have questionable behavior himself.
The bathrooms had a musty smell and no one took care of them the entire time we were there. Not the first time this information has been noted in other reviews. When will there be a solution?
Oh and, we saw a cockroache.
At this price, we found hostels in Auckland that were much better maintained, and closer to the...
Read moreI had a private room for 1 night with a shared bathroom and found it to be clean with all the basic necessities. However, the morning of my second day, there had been some miscommunication between the hostel and the tour company I came with (Haka tours). I was supposed to be at a different hostel instead of being at Haka lodge and was not made aware of this. I received a message from my tour guide (at approximately 12pm) that I had to vacate the hostel by 1pm. When I received this message, I was at Sky tower and had just got to the sky cafe and was waiting for my coffee. I asked the tour guide to ask the hostel staff if they could give me till 2pm to come back and was told the answer was a no. The tour guide then told me that the hostel staff are wanting to move my stuff out of room if I didn't come back in time. I then had to immediately rush from sky tower, take an uber to the hostel and vacated my room within 20 mins. Thankfully, my tour guide was sitting in front of my room guarding my room till I got there. Whilst I understand that the hostel were short staffed and that they had new guests checking in at 2pm, I was very stressed about this whole situation and was not happy with the attitude of the staff and the way in which they dealt with it, especially when they tried to move my things without...
Read moreThe K Road Haka House is great! I stayed for a week and found it to have everything I require at an accommodation. The majority of the staff are friendly and helpful; one guy who was on reception for a couple of days during the middle of my stay probably needs to go do something else for a job bc asking him a simple question about where I'd find something was almost like I'd asked him to remove his arm for me. But all the other reception were great.
I stayed in a solo room, and the bed and pillows were more comfortable than some hotels I've stayed in. Everything was clean, and the room was spacious.
The facilities are also good and clean. Showers were cleaned multiple times a day, and the kitchen was set up well and always clean when I went in.
I loved that it was on K road; it's well located to get around Auckland, and I appreciated having so many places open at night around as there were always people about. There are clubs / pubs on the street, so some nights can get noisy, but I found that with the fan on in the room, it drowned out any noise coming up from the streets, with the window open. There are lots of great places to eat and get groceries in close proximity, too.
I'd definitely stay...
