I booked the hotel for 6 days interupted by 3 nights as we explored Alta in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. Our first night we were in a standard room and it was prefect for what we needed. It was clean and Emmanual was super helpful at checkin and at giving us directions back to the airport using the train system. When we returned after our Alta trip we were given an upgraded room. It was awesome, beyond expectations. Peter checked us in this time and provided us guidance to the Oslo pass which got us onto mass transit and the local museums. I tried to make a last minute booking for Atlas restuarant for New Years Eve, by email prior to arrival but was informed they were all booked up, and once again Peter got us setup with a reservation at Cathedral, but minutes prior to our reservation we were informed of a cancelation at Atlas, we jumped at the opportunity and we were not let down. Read moreDuring the 3-1/2 weeks that my husband and I spent in Norway we stayed in Oslo 3 times for a total of 5 nights. We booked Amerikalinjen for all of our stays and couldn’t be happier with this decision. It was one of our favorite hotels of the trip. It’s an easy walk to/from the central train station and there’s a fast, efficient airport train so it’s equally convenient whether you arrive/depart by air or train. We were able to walk to all of the restaurants we tried in various neighborhoods.||We had a deluxe room every time, but each room was subtly different. They all included a big comfortable king sized bed with luxurious linens, good storage space, excellent lighting and stylish decor. Two had a couch while our last one had 2 chairs instead. The first was on the second floor with a limited view and the rumble of the street cars was more noticeable, though it never impacted our sleep. Those on the fifth and sixth floors had beautiful views of the city and opera house, but on the sixth floor, due to the slant of the roof, there was less space in the bed and bath rooms and a much smaller shower, despite a somewhat better view and a Juliet balcony (couldn’t step out but it was nice for photos). Putting on my Goldilocks hat, the fifth floor was just perfect, though honestly all were terrific. The white bathrobes were the softest and plushest we had during the trip and we liked the 2 sizes of cozy slippers. There were lots of thoughtful amenities, including a brochure in which each member of the reception team describes their favorite spots in the city for sightseeing and dining. They were all delightful and this just helped to personalize them even more. While everyone we dealt with was personable and helpful, we especially want to thank Ronna for providing that extra special touch. We had occasion to meet some of the ladies in housekeeping and they were lovely as well as doing a stellar job, the rooms were spotless. Laundry is somewhat pricey, but we needed it and we were very satisfied with the service.||The public spaces in the hotel were equally beautiful and very comfortable. Sadly we were never there during the weekend so we missed the jazz performances, however the well chosen soundtrack in the restaurant and bar featured quite a bit of jazz and we greatly appreciated it. We usually took the stairs but when we had luggage and needed the elevator we never had to wait long. ||Breakfasts were outstanding in a comfortable, light-filled space with lots of choices on the buffet plus cooked to order dishes and specialty coffees included. We especially enjoyed the smoked salmon Benedict prepared with a pillowy brioche. ||If we’re lucky enough to return to Oslo, we wouldn’t consider staying...
Read moreVery centrally located, adjacent to Oslo Central Station (Oslo S). Opened fairly recently (2019?), this hotel is very much a prestige hotel in Petter Stordalen's Nordic Choice Hotels group. Service is generally excellent, and rooms are very comfortable with modern, quality furnishings but also many vintage touches (the old style dial up telephone, for example, as well as the bathroom fittings). Our room was a standard, courtyard room overlooking the pleasant "Haven" restaurant/seating area in the middle of the hotel. The room was fairly compact, but oozes quality in every area, from the 5 different touch panels controlling the lighting and in-built speakers to stream to (both in the bedroom and shower room), to the timelessly elegant Scandinavian-style desk, to the oh-so inviting armchair and bed, to the (compact...) beautifully-lit shower room, to the discreet lighting which comes on automatically when you open the wardrobe (or walk into the shower room). Each room has photos/documents on the wall, and books on the desk enticing you to reminisce over the history of the Norwegian America Line, the shipping company set up in 1921 (?) which originally operated from the building. Apparently, 800 000 Norwegians emigrated to the US between 1820 and 1930 (?), which was one third of the population at that time. We only stayed one night, but spent an hour in the beautiful basement fitness area/sauna/"mosaic hot-stone bed", which was very pleasant, particularly given that, surprisingly, we had the place to ourselves. Breakfast was also a very positive culinary experience, still only table service in these Corona times, but with a delicately presented selection of warm, cooked items , as well as a smoothie, granola yoghurt, fruit salad, exquisite orange juice, small pastries/pancakes/cookies and tea/coffee. The staff all seem to work very hard to offer the best possible experience to customers, and our overall impression really was excellent. The following, minor details were all I would pick up on for the hotel to bear in mind: when we checked in, we were informed that we had to book a breakfast slot, which was fine by us, but that the only remaining slots were either 8.15 or 10.45 (despite the fact that we checked in fairly early, 16.30). However, the receptionist did then find an available slot for us at a perfect (Sunday morning) time, 9.45 :) Guests could, for example, be invited to book their time slot by e-mail prior to checking in, as other hotels currently do. when we arrived for breakfast, we were shown to a table, but not informed that breakfast was a table service affair. This was not initially obvious to us (or...
