I have to start off by saying that I've never written a bad review for a hostel. I'm not one to complain but I felt the need to write this review. My friend and I stayed at Old Town Hostel our two nights in Lagos Nov. 4 and 5, 2015. I woke up multiple times the first night with many itches. Finally around 4:00 am I got up to look in the mirror because I felt welts on my head. I was shocked to see my forehead was swollen. I went back to the bed with a light and found a bedbug. I then woke up my friend and together we found two more bedbugs. We went out to talk to the person at the front desk. He felt terrible and said they hadn't bad bedbugs in three years. Nonetheless he moved us to a different room. We left out belongings in the first room in case they had gotten into our stuff as we didn't want to spread the bugs. We asked him if there was a laundry mat close by so we could wash our things the next day. He said they had laundry at the hostel. The next morning a new person was working but he had heard about what happened. He told us we could move our stuff to the new room. I explained that it wouldn't be a good idea just in case they had gotten in our clothes. We asked if we could do laundry. He said we could but would have to pay 8 euros per load. We asked if we could do it for free because we were pretty sure they had come from Old Town. He said he would have to ask the owners. After a phone call he informed us that we would indeed have to pay. Frustrated, we hand washed the clothes in extremely hot water. Later in the day Hugo, the manager, was at the hostel. He immediately began telling us that there were NO bugs in the room. He checked everything and he was trained in this. I asked him nicely if I could explain the whole story. As I told him exactly what happened he kept interrupting me but I eventually got the story out and he agreed to dry our clothes for us. Thankful we were finally able to get some help with the situation we gathered our clothes and went with him to the dryer. He put one load in and left the second load in a bucket on the floor. About and hour and a half later we went to check on the first load and found Hugo near the laundry room. He told us, "Do NOT touch the dryer! I will take care of it. You could get electrocuted." Confused, we walked away and trusted he would have our clothes dry by morning. The next morning, however, we got up and went to get our clothes only to find the second load still soaked in the bucket on the floor and the first load still soaked sitting in the dryer. Extremely frustrated at this point we went to talk to the man at the front desk (The same man who told us we had to pay for laundry the day before) Even he seemed to be sorry this time. He was surprised that Hugo hadn't followed through. He helped us put all of our clothes in plastic bags so we could take it to a laundry mat. We paid to rewashed and dry our clothes. We missed our train therefore didn't get to our new city until late that night. We felt as if we lost an entire day of travel simply because the hostel wasn't helpful in a situation we felt the hostel itself had put us in. (Hugo also didn't show up for the kayaking tour he was supposed to take the group on. He said it was because the waters were too rough. He could have at least let the group know. We ended up going with a company that same day so apparently the waters were fine.) Like I said at the beginning, I have never written a bad review but our stay at Old Town was so frustrating. The owner and the manager were the two who could have easily helped us out yet were the ones who were unfriendly in the...
Read moreWe stayed for 4 nights in a room for 8 people in September. The atmosphere of the hostel was great. Staff are always friendly (specially Jason) and you get to know a looot of people in the hostel and the many activities they organize, it really feels like a family, so in this sense I would give them 5 stars. However, the air in our room was terrible and our friend how had to sleep on the upper bed couldn't sleep at all because it was terribly hot and stinky, but last night he could change to a lower bed. I also got some insect bites, I think it was from the bed because it was for 2 nights in a row, but I'm not 100% sure. Things to improve besides the awful ventilation (in the room for 8 people) would be to have real soap in the bathrooms (not only water with 1% soap) and organize activities also to local bars maybe, since you don't really get to know anything of Portugal in the bars that only for people in sping break mood. Cleanness was I think standard for a beach hostel. I would really like to give this hostel 5 stars because of the wonderful people, but there are still lots of things to improve there. To be fair, they told us they had just opened the hostel for this season and some things weren't...
Read moreThis is a really good hostel if you want to party and meet a lot of people. The family dinners organized by Jason and Amy were delicious and we got to know people from everywhere.||During the day they offer kayak trips, surfing, visits to the benagil caves, etc...|In the evening after the dinner, there is always a pub crawl or bar evening.||All in all, like in the other reviews, you get this family feeling where you are always going out with the other people from the hostel (staff and guests)||-1 point:|We were uncomfortable with the room condition and ventilation, but since we were going out all the time and doing lots of activities, we were so tired at night that this wasn't a huge deal. I was told that they have plans for renovation so this may not be an issue...
