We stayed here for 7 nights in Oct 25 after having spent 2 weeks journeying the garden route and staying at other 4/5* hotels/lodges. First impressions were good - stylish decor in the lounge, super friendly welcome and we were able to go to our room well before scheduled. Riano looked after us during our stay and his infectious enthusiasm and commitment to doing everything possible to make guests feel special was really appreciated.
We had room 17 (a superior suite). It's a very large room with an integral kitchen area, 2 sofa beds, a huge and comfortable main bed, a wood-burning stove (we didn't use as weather was warm) and a small balcony.
To get to the room you have to go outside, past the swimming pool and up some stairs at the rear of the premises. Unfortunately, this area is far from the luxurious description on the hotels website - think rusty external iron door with no glass, doorways undecorated, badly knocked and damaged paintwork and noisy wooden stairs. The doorway to the rooms balcony has a sliding and rusty iron security grill which can be padlocked. We decided not to use this - but it too doesn't convey a sense of luxury (or safety). The room also contained a paper form for us to use should we note any essential maintenance required.
Some elements of service were excellent. Riano couldn't have been a better host, and the laundry we gave them came back very clean - and well within 24 hours. However other areas let them down. Our room wasn't properly hoovered as small dead insects were left untouched for at least 3 days. Cleaning equipment was left in our room one day too.
We also witnessed some very unprofessional behaviour at breakfast by one of the male staff. He was obviously in a bad mood and let this show in front of guests. Echos of Basil Fawlty sadly.
We did provide face to face feedback on all of the above before leaving and Riano was very apologetic. He explained that the area and room we were staying in was one of the last to be refurbished - due to be done next year I believe. He promised to address the staff/service issues too.
It was a shame that our worst hotel experience came right at the end our holiday.
Were it not for Riano - we would have given this...
Read moreIn a word. . . spectacular. I’ve traveled internationally quite a bit, and this was one of my favorite accommodations in the world so far due to the exceptional personalized service and warm hospitality. The lodge is impeccably clean and delightfully decorated, but it is the people who made it such a pleasant experience. Kaarin arranged our airport transport and tours (with private driver/tour guide Fareid) and proactively inquired if we would like to swap days for our Winelands and Cape Point tours to take advantage of the weather. Riano is utterly charming and suggested restaurants and made reservations for us. Godfrey was so helpful and informative, providing us with a map and recommendations for the best use of our time in Cape Town. Raymond was a brand new employee, but cheerful and eager to be of assistance. The breakfast each morning was delicious, including great coffee, Eggs Benedict, food cooked to order, quality fruit, several fresh juices, etc. The baked sweets available in the afternoon were a lovely accompaniment to tea or coffee, and the turn down service with hot water bottles to warm the bed was such a thoughtful idea. It all served to make our stay such an...
Read moreHad a great stay at Blackheath Lodge in May 2016. We were warmly welcomed by the owners and offered a complimentary glass of wine on arrival. They offered us our own choice of 3 different rooms, which I thought was great service.
The breakfast consists of a selection of fruit, yoghurts, freshly made pastries and pies, as well as made-to-order breakfast items like eggs and bacon. Overall, the breakfast was great and the staff were wonderful. We had dinner at the hotel one night, which was also excellent.
We booked an all day tour of the Cape of Good Hope through the hotel with their guide, Percy, who was fantastic and took lots of photos for us. The hotel also arranged a booking at The Pot Luck Club for us.
I liked that most of the channels on the TV were film channels, and if there's nothing you want to watch on at the time, they have a selection of DVD's to choose from in reception.
Sea Point is a very nice area and you can walk to the beach in less than 5 minutes. I would highly recommend booking a stay at Blackheath Lodge and would return if I come back...
