The secret is out. The owner of Hesheng has retired to this quaint small establishment doing a combination of her favourites alongside Korean food. Hesheng is still around but under new ownership. We decided to give Korean Style a try. Not that she needs to be reviewed, after all she is the Dalien queen of dumplings and pancakes.
My personal favourite is the sweet bean pancake but today we ate spring onion pancake. What an amazing experience. She is back to her best offering. Smaller is better. We met the owner when her sister and husband started Hesheng where Nandos is today. I always bring all my Chinese guests to them for specially prepared authentic home cooked meals.
We decided on a Chinese and Korean Sunday lunch. OMG. She definitely has the best spring onion pancake and the best ramen beef broth I grew up with. My soul sang after trying countless local favourite venues claiming to serve ramen noodles broth. No-one is really that good if it's not in the blood and DNA. 6 dishes tea for 3 people, cost R535.00 now that's a bargain if you can also walk away with a doggy bag.
Remember this is her last venue before she retires. If you don't find your favourite on the menu ask for it. She will oblige. I suggest you visit them before they leave town and return to their home village in Dalien China. Each Chinese cuisine has an authentic taste and influence. This is not a Cantonese menu. So don't expect it upon arrival. My reviews are unbiased and I pay for...
Read moreMy first foray into the Korean cuisine was at the Korean Kitchen restaurant at Claremont. Everything was stellar and spectular there. I suggest you check them out.
The food at this one was quickly served, but this could be because we were first to arrive just as the loadshedding period was ending. But I saw other guests after us didn't have to wait too long either, so that was really amazing.
I didn't ask as much information as I probably should have about my Bibimbap and expected it to be hotter than it was, which was a minor let down. Also my expectations was pretty inflated because of the experience at the Claremont restaurant. The food was well cooked and tasted delicious nontheless.
The waiters were also respectful people who were helpful and were worth the tip and more. Unfortunately they didn't have as much Korean snacks and merch to buy as the other Korean Kitchen. But nonetheless I hope this one becomes more successful as the one in Claremont. They definitely have the potential.
Conclusion: don't have any crazy big expectations of this Korean Kitchen if you've been to the other one. And don't be like me. Minimise the comparisons and it will make your experience much better. But otherwise, you will not be...
Read moreWe were just looking for a bite to eat after a long trip to get to Cape Town and in avoiding the chain burger restaurant across the road we thought we'd give this unassuming little place a go.
We weren't in the mood for a full Korean barbecue so I can't comment on that aspect but everything that we ordered and ate was delicious and just the right portion size: bibimpap, japchae, bokkeum. The manager was a friendly host without assuming himself into our party, and seemed genuinely invested in maintaining a relaxed vibe (mind you, it was a quiet public holiday on a hot afternoon). The ambience is ok, maybe a bit too bright but that is probably best in the location and for their size, so this isn't a complaint. We drank a fruit-infused soju beverage but I can't say that I was impressed with it - I would have preferred a real soju personally.
Definitely worth checking out, I can't relate to their authenticity but the dishes we had were comparable if not better than those we'd...
