My Uncle & I visited Luzern for the first time, this was my uncle's first ever visit to Switzerland and my second. We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. This hotel is located right across the road from the Luzern railway station and can be accessed through a covered passage and an escalator in the lower level of the railway station(you don't need to walk outside the railway station to cross the road, the escalator brings you right to the doorstep of this hotel). This hotel is also located within walking distance to all the major tourist attractions of Luzern: the Chapel Bridge, Spreur Bridge, Old Town, the Saint Leodegar Cathedral, the Lion monument, Glacier Gardens, Lake Luzern, the Musegg Wall, etc. There are lots of restaurants and eateries within walking distance too.||We booked a junior suite and received Room 514. Our room was large and very spacious but the furniture and fittings were old, especially the carpet. We received 3 bottles of sparkling water each day but that was it. The mini bar was empty, toiletries were basic, soap & shower gel were common generic brands. The air-conditioning worked okay, the room was reasonably quiet except for the noisy neighbours in the next room. This room has a connecting door, which we could hear babies, children and women screaming, yelling, shouting and crying noise through the connecting door. Our room faced the main road and the Luzern railway station and we did not hear any traffic noise except for the sirens of emergency vehicles just a couple of times over the 5 nights. This is much, much better than Rome, where we could hear loud sirens of emergency vehicles NON-STOP DAY & NIGHT from our hotel room!!!||The breakfast buffet was average, not the best that we have ever seen in an hotel, but you will have options whether you are a vegan, vegetarian or follow a normal diet. No waiters are going to serve you specialty coffee or tea in this breakfast buffet, you have to make them yourself! At least they had cherries and nectarines on the fruit counter on a few mornings!||The staff at the front desk are helpful, we asked for a city map and directions to the specific tourist attractions as well as day trip recommendations, and they gave us all the information we requested. There are complimentary apples for in-house guests on the counter as well as lemon-infused drinking water.||USEFUL TIP FOR OVERSEAS VISITORS: We stayed in Luzern for 5 nights because this city is located in central Switzerland and we used this as our base to do day-trips to Interlaken, Lugano, St. Gallen and Engelberg using the public trains. The train network of Switzerland is one of the best in the world, the trains are quiet, clean, efficient and punctual, making it very easy and affordable to travel around Switzerland by train. If you are going to take the public trains and public transport daily, I recommend that you get the Swiss Travel Pass. This train pass covers all modes of public transport in Switzerland including buses, boats and ferries. The Swiss Travel Pass also gives you free admission into most museums and tourist attractions around Switzerland.||All-in-all, we had a good holiday in Switzerland and we would consider staying at the Hotel Monopol Luzern if we return to this city. Hopefully, they would have renovated their...
Read moreAfter a long tedious flight, I get to the hotel at 1am. Door was locked so I rung the door bell for five minutes. A guy comes to the door and said can I help you. I told him I had a reservation. He looked me up on the computer and said you canceled that. I said no I didn't. We went back and forth, you know when someone is calling you a liar. I went through priceline. We called priceline and no one answered. He said I'll give you a room for the night, but you'll have to pay for it. I said I didn't care. I was exhausted. I called priceline as soon as I woke up and told them what was going on. They said it wasn't canceled and gave me a confirmation#. They called and realized I had a reservation, duh. So they took me to the room that I had paid for. Never an apology for the stress they put me through. Don't let the outside of the building fool you. Way over rated. Room was outdated. Wallpaper was coming off. The bottom of the shower curtain was dirty not really moldy but pretty close. Carpet was was yucky The trim on the door was scratched up pretty bad. It's as if someone put a dog in the bathroom since they allow dogs. The only thing nice was the roof top bar and restaurant. They were not affiliated with the hotel. The waitresses were very kind to me. It was a beautiful view. And to cause more stress, I got there on a Sunday and didn't get my clothes until Thursday night. At least I had decent clothes on. To get me to Thursday. I was leaving Sunday. I didn't get a chance to do the things I wanted. But the views of Switzerland took all the the stress away. I would say never go through a 3rd party making reservations. I'd give priceline a 5 out of five. Just make your reservations right through the hotel. I could go on about my experience when I got there, but this is long enough. I would give it a one out of 5. The workers were not very friendly. Oh yeah they told me sometimes the computer messes up. I did get my money back for the room I had to pay for that night. I would say if you ever go to Luzern stay on the seaside. Thats what they call it.There are more shops and restaurants. But nothing can ever take away the beauty, sights, and energy you feel when...
Read moreI have to admit that I'm rather unimpressed with the operations of this hotel. Be warned when making your reservation on their website that after selecting your date, it will redirect you to a room selection page where the dates are automatically refreshed to today's date (whatever date that may be). I made this error to hopefully warn you, because this hotel is rather unforgiving with an error that they fully admit at least partial blame for (as it is their website with this "technical issue"). As I am in another location completely, that means I booked my room at 7:30pm Switzerland time. I never got a confirmation email, but I did get a confirmation screen that I saved. I say this because I assumed the email would be forthcoming. Having not received one by the next day double checked everything and yes, noticed my error. Fully admitting fault, I reached out to the hotel to find them completely unhelpful. Again, I fully admit fault here, and fully admit to accepting their terms and conditions. But with the error made so late in the evening, I find it HIGHLY unlikely that this hotel lost "the chance to resell the room" and have to say I'm pretty disappointed with such lack of understanding in the hospitality industry. I don't want to drag them too hard, they are not necessarily in the wrong, however I do think that it is relevant for future guests to know the level of customer and future customer satisfaction and accommodation this hotel is comfortable with. Drag me for my error, that's fine, however am just saying that to expect clients to never make an error and or refuse to forever make reasonable concessions or accommodations (again for a room booked very late in the evening making reselling quite unlikely), is also pretty unimpressive...
