Not enough good things can be said about Ma and her team at her guesthouse, located in the SW quarter of the Old City above her beauty salon (which she gives discount to her guests on haircuts and other services) - a perfect base to explore Chiang Mai and beyond. We stayed here for 6 nights and each was an absolute pleasure.
All the staff were so friendly and helpful, each going the extra mile to ensure that our stay was the best it could be. Ma herself helped us book various activities to do in Chiang Mai such as watching some Muay Thai boxing, attending a Thai cookery class, and a trip to Pai. A free laundry service was also provided.
The rooms were immaculate and beautifully decorated. Our private bathroom was outside on the balcony but sheltered from the outside world, very surreal. There was also the option of using a shared bathroom on the same floor.
Breakfast was provided everyday which included sticky mango rice, an assortment of fresh fruit, and other Thai cuisine such as pad thai or curry that was freshly homemade. Bread and condiments were available throughout the day if we got hungry, as were tea, coffee and cold drinking water. These were all on the gorgeous outdoor terrace with plants and benches to sit and relax or observe the passing citizens.
One particular highlight was when we mentioned to Ma that we wanted to try the popular Northern Thai cuisine Khao Soi - she went out of her way to order in her favourite and set up a lovely spread for us to eat, at no extra cost.
Upstairs there were a few cats that enjoyed being petted, and we even got to meet the adorable Fifu on our final day.
As much as there is natural beauty in the wildlife and sceneries found in Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand, the real beauty is found in the kindness of its warm-hearted people, and Ma and her team are firsthand evidence of this.
Ma Guesthouse is a home...
Read moreIt’s hard to put into words how much I loved staying here. This was my first time at a guesthouse instead of hotel, and I was absolutely blown away. Ma welcomed us like family. I will always remember the comfort, quaintness, and hospitality...cannot wait to return to Chiang Mai to stay here again. We spent 4 nights, and were sad to leave. The place was immaculately clean and beautifully decorated. Honestly made me start daydreaming about moving to Chiang Mai to have a house just like Ma’s.||||Homemade breakfast served daily was phenomenal (a little different each day, combination of Thai and Western foods). Excellent WiFi and utilities. There was air conditioning in our room, but we found the fan to be sufficient. Things to note: Do not leave electronics plugged in or lights on while away from the room. We were very respectful of this. Also, paper and feminine products must be placed into the provided waste container, not flushed down the toilet. Ma will treat you extremely well, so please be mindful of these requests.||||The balcony sitting/dining area was quite lovely. It was a nice community space for chatting with other guests. We met travelers from England, China, Australia, Germany...and everyone raves about their wonderful time at Ma Guesthouse. The location is perfect as well. Thank you Ma, for everything. I could not have imagined a better stay in Chiang Mai Old Town. So grateful for...
Read moreMa and her staff are FANTASTIC and attract good guests which also makes for a good experience. The bed is on the hard side (which is par for Asia) - this was the ONLY negative! The outdoor balcony bathroom is fun, functional and fine to use. Good pressure in the shower and hot water is great. We were able to leave our luggage as we arrived early (and also when we checked out). We were generously offered breakfast even before we checked in. Breakfast was ALWAYS delicious, (noodles /fried rice/sticky rice) the fruit was always ripe and perfect. Provided drinking water was greatly appreciated - able to have bottled water and fill your re-useable bottle too! The common/breakfast area was so beautiful and lovely to spend time in - perfect for watching local life go by! We felt safe with security measures provided after dark. We had some laundry done for free (but be aware they use highly scented detergent if you are sensitive) Even though there are bars around, there was not excessive noise at night in the area. Close to a great public park, pharmacy, loads of cute little places to eat and drink. Walking distance to Sunday night walking street/market. Lots to discover in the area! Also check out the salon downstairs if you need a beauty freshen up! Thank you so much to Ma and her wonderful staff for a great stay! Highly recommend this place to stay...
