On our first family trip (group of 7 siblings and one nephew) to Chiang Mai, we made our hotel booking based on research of the areas we would like to be close to, pictures, and of course, reviews from multiple sources.
Just 15 minutes by taxi from the airport, the hotel is conveniently located along Rachadamnoen Road (which transforms into a walking street with a massive night bazaar every Sunday evening). Cafes, restaurants, shops and 24-hr convenience stores are also located along the street within a 1-5 minute walk.
The Reception area was small and cosy, but well designed with ample sitting areas for waiting as well as benches outside the entrance. Th 4-storey hotel comes with a compact lift that can accommodate around 4 adults (fewer if luggage included) and a staircase to access the rooms. Behind the reception is a small reading nook with comfy leather chairs. This leads on to a bar counter which was once part of a cafe in the hotel, that has now been converted into an art gallery space. Beyond that, 2 glass doors that lead out to a back garden with a decent sized swimming pool.
We were checked in by Khun Tip, providing us information on the room allotment, wifi access, hotel services and nearby amenities. We were assigned 2 types of rooms for our stay - 2 pool-facing King Bed rooms, and 1 street facing family room (1 single, 1 King). Room sizes were ample for our needs, with a good sized, nicely decorated bathroom with hot water supply and a room balcony. They provide toiletries, mini fridge, coffee, tea & kettle along with bottled drinking water (topped up daily).
Besides the excellent location, we were impressed with the service rendered by the four staff - 2 ladies who took care of the housekeeping for 17 rooms daily as well as cleaning the common areas and poolside; and 2 front desk staff who rotated shifts. Khun Tip, the day receptionist, spoke sufficient English to help us out with recommendations on where to eat and shop, how to get there and even assisted with getting us taxis and giving directions to the driver. Kenny, the evening receptionist spoke English well, was very friendly and extremely helpful with information and recommendations. He would even recommend little known places like nearby villages where we could eat authentic Chiang Mai food in a truly local setting which most tourists would never be aware of. On one evening at a night bazaar, my nephew had a trip and fall with a nasty scrape on his knee. When we returned to the hotel, Kenny immediately got out a first aid kit and proceeded to clean, dress the wound and even offered to change the dressing every night till our check out. Excellent service from Kenny!
If you're looking for 5-star hotel amenities and and a fancy setting with 300-thread count linens, this is not the place for you. If you prefer a cosy, ambient space to unwind and have a good rest, coupled with authentic hospitality, Momo Hotel should definitely be on your...
Read moreWe stayed for 3 nights during New Years. The good: Its very affordable and located right in the middle of everything! All you have to do is walk outside and everything is at your fingertips. I couldn't hear the neighbors or all of the craziness that was going on outside. The cleaning staff is really good and attentive. The bad: the hotel was refabed maybe 2 years ago and I think they did a fine job but it's not really being maintained very well. I would say this is one step above a nice hostel. The rooms are so small it barely has enough room to fit your luggage. The bed takes up the entire room. To note, the rooms with two twin beds are much larger about twice the size but facing the street and they are less expensive. The bed is also Thai style, meaning its like sleeping on the floor. Many people in SE Asia love this type of bed but this is not what I am used to. So it makes sleeping very difficult and sleeping-in almost impossible. If you are used to this type of bed then no problem. The reception or front staff could be better with customer service, scheduling taxi's, or providing information on restaurants, or events. I think they are really missing out here on providing better service. I wouldn't stay here again but its also a great deal for someone on a...
Read moreThe room size is 11sqm. All of their listings on Agoda say their rooms are 25sqm (except for the family rooms). There was barely any room to get around the bed let alone open up our suitcases. And yes I did measure the room as well. The main room with bed was 11 sqm rounded up. The bathroom was 4sqm. The balcony was 5sqm (even though it's not all useable space). Even if you add all areas up and combine them it is smaller than they say.
Also we got there at 9-10pm to check in and their bar was closed. No stress. Got up and wanted to have a coffee. Their Momo coffee shop next door was closed until 8! The downstairs bar area was still closed. It was really sad - lights were all off and seemed very dishevelled. They have an elevator but it's TINY (two of us could barely fit with our luggage). Would not recommend especially for the price - if it was half the price I would consider.
And wouldn't have given a low rating if we had known how small the rooms were. Stayed in two other places in Chiang Mai and they both had more room - one of those said 16sqm and we had more space. The other one said 23sqm (so 2 smaller than what the Momo listing said) and it was huge in comparison. Stayed in a double room...
