My partner and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Peerless on two occasions, and it has unequivocally become our preferred hotel in Ashland. Despite our visits being a couple of years apart, our most recent stay afforded us the opportunity to revel in the breathtaking new renovations that the hotel has undergone.
Securing our reservation through a third-party booking agency, we found the keyless, self-check-in system to be remarkably convenient. As travelers who cover a considerable distance, the seamless check-in process allowed us to settle in without the need for extensive interactions.
The property itself is nothing short of spectacular—charming, cozy, and meticulously detailed. Substantial upgrades, particularly in the common areas, have taken place since our last visit. The front entry exudes warmth with an ambient fireplace, antique furniture, and intriguing artifacts, including captivating images of the hotel's resident ghost from the past.
Our chosen abode, room 3, was a grand three-room suite that exuded romance. The ambient lighting, flickering candle lights in antique lamps, and thoughtful touches like champagne and chocolates on the bed created an enchanting atmosphere. Attention to detail was evident, with two side-by-side clawfoot tubs in the spacious bathroom, a sitting room featuring a fireplace, and various inviting corners to relax. The bed provided an exceptionally comfortable haven, contributing to a restful three-night stay.
The main common area/sitting room, where complimentary coffee, tea, and water are available around the clock, was another highlight. We appreciated the diverse selection of games that added to our enjoyment.
While the hotel offers three parking spots in the rear, our large truck found ample space in the front on-street parking. The location in a quiet neighborhood was a delightful escape from our urban routine. Exploring downtown and the charming neighborhood, replete with beautiful homes and local wildlife like deer and squirrels, added to our overall enjoyment.
It's worth noting that the staircase leading to the upstairs rooms is somewhat narrow. However, a straightaway staircase on the right side of the building provides a more navigable route to the second floor, especially when handling luggage. Checking in through the front or back door and opening it from the inside ensures a...
Read moreMy wife and I fell in love with Peerless a few years ago. The gentleman at the front desk was amazing, the rooms will filled with the perfect music that made you feel like you were staying on Bourbon Street in Disney World, the breakfast-in-bed was great (even after the restaurant was sold off), and the pricing was fair. Some of our funniest date night stories are from Peerless.
Covid made things rough for the previous owner though and it was subsequently closed and then re-opened, and then closed, and then sold, and then re-opened... It's been rough, and we get that. We were excited it was opening up back up, but seeing how the new owners have handled the opening has been painful to watch. Ultimately they've killed any desire we had to stay there again.
Checking my records, the room prices themselves have gone up slightly, but they have added absurd cleaning fees that no other hotel we stay at has added. Not Jacksonville Inn, not McCully House, not even The Winchester Inn. With the increased room rate and ridiculous cleaning fees, Room 5 which used to run $277, now costs $393. We haven't seen anything more than moderate price increases at the other "romantic getaway" hotels/cottages in the valley, which makes what Peerless has done that much more absurd.
$400 a night would be fine if the experience reflected the price, but it doesn't. They've raised the rates and made the experience worse. Gone is the Charter music that made so much of the ambiance and gone is the in-room check-in where you get to choose your breakfast.
The new owners completely missed the mark with their remodel. It's a shame. We still eat at the now disassociated restaurant next door - which is wonderful - but it's a shame what greed and a lack of understanding what made Peerless special has done to the hotel.
So eat at the restaurant, but you're better of...
Read moreWe booked the anniversary suite for our 10 year anniversary. We had trouble finding our check in instructions and it took staff almost 4 hours to respond via text; they would not answer the phone. When we went to go to bed the first night there were white fluid stains on the duvet cover. I don't need to say what that looks like, but please, CLEAN YOUR BEDDING BEFORE NEW GUESTS ARRIVE. So gross. I finally got ahold of someone around 9pm, she was kind and apologetic. She had me go get a new duvet cover out of their housekeeping closet, which was better than the other option at 9pm which was waiting 60 min for their house keeping to arrive from Medford. I hadn't asked for anything other than clean bedding, but I felt that the offer she gave us, after having what I assume was some other couple's bodily fluids on our bedding, was reasonable: a partial refund. I recall her saying she would refund half of our stay, but when we checked out she only processed a 10% refund. I let them know that I found this unacceptable after our earlier conversation and that I would take the appropriate reporting steps in regards to having someone else's bodily fluids (which can be infectious) on our bedding. Part of my assumption about the stain was that they also left a "10% off" coupon for the local "intimate" store on the bed. After check out, the owner, Kyle, called us and offered to give us a full refund, but not before saying they had recorded all of our conversations and that we are liars and would be blacklisted from their hotel because we didn't know how to "be good guests". That was the most insane, condescending, and insulting 17 min call I've ever had from a business. My wife and I were just totally blown away....
