The new management has decimated the charm of ASH. -We asked for one of the rooms with a bit more space than the center several. We were told "rooms can't be promised ahead of time; we will do our best to honor your request." Their best got us a -14 room which is even more cramped than last year's -12 room. -The bathroom door squeaked loudly. I mentioned it the day we arrived, the next morning, the subsequent next two mornings. I noted to front desk that all it needs is WD-40, which I had not brought with me. By day 2 I noted, "it squeaks whenever someone uses the bathroom, at 1, at 3, at 4am...please fix this." I rementioned it as we checked out. -The bathroom light is on the outside of the bathroom. Turning on the light sends a stream of light across the bed into the eyes of whomever is sleeping on the east side. No way around that. Four nights of one person sleeping as far west as possible to avoid nighttime bathroom light in their face, while the bathroom user tried substituting cellphone light. I mentioned this to front desk, was told there is no way to change a room that is coded in the Historic Register. Yet: the bathroom light fixture is fastened onto the sink's mirror, rendering unpleasant reflections and nonusable light?? One can't reposition the switch inside the bathroom directly opposite of where it is? One cannot move the bed westward? -We booked months ago with breakfast included as usual. Upon arrival we were told, "we now charge $18/per person/per breakfast; since you booked before this change we can offer you a voucher for the first two nights of your stay." A later front desk person kindly gave us vouchers for each night, after I explained that in-hotel breakfast is a medical necessity for us and had we known we would have booked elsewhere. My further critique of this excessive charge at a hotel which already charges considerably/night and includes a nonoptional "activity fee" is that people might well be less willing to tip the fine breakfast cooks and waiters. Profits to management, not to workers. -Room cleaning is not done for 3 days; since the arrival day is considered a "cleaned room day," it's cleaned on the fourth day. I understand the policy and reason so no complaint except that our room was cleaned on the 2 (3rd?) day. I would have preferred some WD-40 applied to the bathroom door. -Location as always is useful for theatre, but there are other options equally walkable. When booking months in advance requesting a roomier room and given what I know to be one of the two tiniest; when noting a problem with squeaking hinges on arrival day and repeatedly thereafter...we'll find different lodging in the future. ps. Kudos to the chefs and two of the front...
Read moreMy childhood favorite place to run up 9 flights of stairs and gaze at this little beauty jewel of Ashland, Oregon. Back then this was as tall a building I had ever been to the top of & I would relish the moment I arrived, panting & excited to see everything from up there.
Years later of course I had many more opportunities to visit and stay at the top floors of presidential suites in 5 & even 7 star hotels around the world. Having lived with affluence much later in life, helps me to really treasure this historic monument & this historic moment as I stay here now.
Everything is as I remember: Gorgeous entrance with expansive foyer, welcoming atmosphere with all of the little embellishments that bring you home when you arrive. From the old fashioned style luggage cart, to a full salon experience with historic ballroom, & viewing balconies with elaborate moldings from floor to ceilings, all hints at an age old tradition of elegance & comfort.
As an advanced level local guide whose reviews have reached almost 1 million views, I thought it would be appropos to share a little of my experience & give Ashland a little compliment with this review.
I will add to it as I go along & just as much as I relished this place as a young child, I am sure to revel in it all!
So many beautiful details, and amenities such as excellent pillows, very comfortable bed, with lovely soft and high quality linens. The bathrooms had floor carpets and every detail such as even makeup remover.
Every detail down to the smallest of importance, they have it down.
I would mention that front desk service was not available numerous times but they do have a voicemail set up so you can leave a message and they call you back.
Details: doors stay open so you can bring your things inside the suite.
Warm & welcome painted walls, mirrors, antique furnishings, fine art.
Quiet.
Beds are very comfortable, mattresses do not spring back so you don't wake up your husband when getting up at night.
Beautiful lamps, incandescent lighting.
Lovely originals.
Spacious, moldings, archways, grandeur.
Kind customer service.
HOT, HOT water.
Very nice shower, with extra lg rain shower head. Quilted, detailed embroidered curtain.
Clean, and although an old building, the atmosphere & scent is elegant like a fine delicate perfume.
Very affordable price point. Honestly for this price, one would expect far less & is comparable to far less luxurious hotels, inns, and b&b's. Not sure how they...
Read moreThis was our third year in a row staying at the Ashland Springs Hotel for a weekend trip to the Shakespeare Festival. The hotel is turning 100 years old and despite that age the service has been good and the rooms clean. Unfortunately this trip we were caught off guard by the lack of quality in our experience.
When we arrived at our room the comforter had stains on it and the bathroom had long black hair all over. We were going to go ask for additional cleaning, but decided not to when we passed the maid laundry area on the way to the lobby. The employees looked exhausted and clearly were having a good time. When you look around the hallways and rooms its one continuous landlord special of cover up jobs. We were unlucky to be in a room near some noisy folks who had a door with no soft stop. Every time they went in and out our whole room shook. Late night and early morning. This should be an automatic repair item for hotel management. The towels in the bathroom were tattered and frayed. I’m all for using things until they are worn out, but not when I’m paying $300 a night. How is there not a budget for towels and bedding to be replaced? When I check out they were unable to give me a receipt because of a “printer problem”. I got to my car and checked my email to see they overcharge me vs me reservation booking from 6 month prior. When I went in I had to find my email and hand my phone to the front desk. Not a huge fan of someone else handling my phone when they have the info on their computer. After some theatrics the employee said it was a $20 resort fee that they added. It was obvious I was not the first person to bring this up. Not only was that not on my reservation, but I was not informed of a new fee ahead of time or at check in. Considering they had time to text me a month ago saying they were eliminating the free breakfast, they could have mentioned the fee at that time.
My advice to management – Raise the price a bit and maintain the hotel service and quality. Cutting the service, stressing staff, and adding random fees makes for an off putting experience when you are spending $300 a night. What used to be a unique and cool hotel experience just ended up feeling cheap. You have plenty of business, are the only hotel downtown, and offer a historic charm. Just raise the price $25 a night and do your job to maintain the staff and property. Good grief. We will not be staying here on our trip next year. Hopeful there is a change in ownership or management...
