This used to be a private home on a very large lot, when it became a hotel they added several cottages on the property, linked together by small pathways and surrounded by gardens and small fountains, creating a very charming environment. Best features: -Very pet friendly. They charge a very low fee for pets compared to other pet friendly hotels. -I like the layout (as I said very charming), the fact that it is not one big building, it feels like a small village. No neighbors upstairs! -Our room (Maple) was in a cottage with only one other neighbor that we never heard. It also had its own private walk way to get to the door, so it was extremely private and quiet. -We could walk from the street to our door through some nice pathways, gardens and fountains without going through depressing hallways and elevators or having to deal with anybody. Again very private. -The room was small but comfortable and quaint. -Great remodeled shower. -The staff was very friendly and helpful. -The room, the beds, the bathroom, everything was clean. -No pests/infestations of any kind. -Complimentary snacks and hot beverages throughout the day was very nice. -Close distance to everything. We did not have to drive at all while we were in Carmel. -Parking available for no extra fee. Worse features: -The carpet cost them half a star. I took a peek at my one and only neighbor's room when the maid was cleaning it and noticed the same carpet. It is probably vacuum clean, but I doubt it that they steam clean the rugs after each visitor. And even if they did so the carpet was very old and worn out and wrinkled everywhere. They need to do what every other hotel is doing and change the rug for hard wood, pergo, vinyl, something that can be easily cleaned/mopped, particularly if there are guest pets. Also the room would look so much better if they did this small change. -The lack of proper heating/cooling system cost them another half star. The heater for the whole room and bathroom was a tiny 8" x 10" (approximate) heater on the wall by the door. The first night we left the heater on all night and froze to death. Next day we borrowed a small space heater from the front desk and with both heaters on all night we were able to be comfortable. During Christmas in the middle of winter this becomes a very serious problem. We tried to open the windows to air the room and noticed that they were all painted shut. There was a regular fan in the closet as the only means of cooling the place, no a/c, so I can only imagine that in summer this place gets extremely hot and there is not much you can do about it other than leave your front door wide open and turn the fan on. This is obviously a very serious problem too. DIDN'T COST THEM A STAR BUT STILL DISAPPOINTING: -Complimentary breakfast turned out to be the same snacks and drinks they have out during the day, nothing special. No waffles, scrambled eggs, fruit and yogurt, expresso drinks, etc. Although being in Carmel this is a moot point because of all the wonderful places where you can go for breakfast, which is part of the fun of being there. -Beds were OK but frame was a bit wobbly. -Some scratches on the wall, they could spot paint the place. I ALMOST GAVE THEM 3 STARS but they had so many good points that they got 4 stars. I would like to consider them again particularly if they fix the...
Read moreTerrible experience and unsafe for families with young children We stayed in a downstairs room with an additional attic room. While the space itself was fine, the overall experience was very disappointing and unsafe — especially for families. The attic room was unbearably hot during the day with no air conditioning, making it extremely uncomfortable. At night, temperatures dropped significantly, and the place became very cold. I tried to turn on the heat in the morning, not realizing that the “heat” was controlled by a fireplace located dangerously close to the stairs leading to the attic. We have a 1.5-year-old who is still learning to walk, so our primary concern was her safety. To block her from accessing the stairs and fireplace, we used our luggage as a barrier. Unfortunately, once the fireplace turned on, we smelled something burning — our brand new luggage had melted. It wasn’t clear at all that turning on the heat would activate the fireplace, and there were no warnings or signage indicating this risk. When I contacted management to request a baby gate or safety solution, they said there was nothing they could do, but gave me the contact info for someone named Amir. He asked us to send an email detailing the incident, which we did — and never heard back. I followed up two months later, only to be met with rudeness. Amir said management laughed at the situation and claimed they “tested” it and that nothing burned near the fireplace. He then told me I should have used “common sense” — incredibly disrespectful, especially after our child’s safety was at risk and our belongings were damaged. This was a terrible experience with unacceptable customer service. The property is not child-safe, and the way the situation was handled was both unprofessional and dismissive. We will not be returning and do not recommend staying here — particularly if you’re...
Read moreWhile in Carmel-By-The-Sea for a Wedding weekend I stayed in the "Laurel" room at The Green Lantern Inn. The location was excellent as it is just a few blocks up from the ocean and a couple blocks from Ocean Avenue where all the shops and restaurants are. |LOCATION: Excellent|CLEANLINESS: Very Clean|BED: Very Comfortable|ROOM: The "Laurel" room itself is pretty big with a small table and 2 chairs. The closet is extremely small with a closet bar much lower than a typical one so that a long dress would touch the floor if hung in the closet. |BATHROOM: The bathroom in the "Laurel" room is very small; not updated but clean. There is very little to no counter space. A ledge in the main room was convenient for holding toiletries. |EXTRAS: Refrigerator; portable fans (there is no A/C); 2 folding luggage racks; clothes iron and ironing board in room. No coffee maker. |HEATING & COOLING: There is no fireplace in the "Laurel" room as some other rooms do have a fireplace. Make sure you have the heater conveniently available to you as the room can get cold. No A/C in the room but portable fans are located in the room. |VIEW: A small obstructed view of the ocean. |PUBLIC AREAS: The Lobby looks like it has been recently updated and includes tables and chairs; sitting area as well as coffee. There are outdoor seating areas around the property. |PARKING: Convenient parking. |NOTE: The "Laurel" room is upstairs and is not conducive to those with mobility issues. The property itself is built on the hill so it too can be a challenge for those with mobility issues. |I...
