I stayed here to be close to Newark NJ for a music festival. First off when I checked in I had to wait while the one staff member ignored me for another guest with an issue. I wouldn't have minded except I got to the window first obviously ready to check in and I am a double amputee having to stand there for the 10 minutes with bags needing to be attended to. And I heard another person behind the desk on phone not attending to anyone at all.
Then after I finally got into my room... less than an hour later the fire alarm went off. We had to evacuate by stairs, im on the 4th floor...with two prosthetics and I rushed out without my crutches. The alarm was so loud my ears were ringing for a couple hours after which given that I was going to a nightclub for the evening... sigh not great. And I had to wait in the miniscule lobby with little seating for disabled and elderly guests until the fire dept finally showed up to disfuse the alarm, which was set off by someone cooking without proper ventilation.
At least the room was manageable, I could get around with and without my prosthetics thanks to the accessible features like rolling chairs and grab bars. The low counter space was key too. The kitchenette was in working order as was the cooling/heating.
The bed was comfy for me but I should have brought my own pillows cause the ones there were kinda weak.
The TV/portal/cable options were sufficient but I had trouble with the remote and had to get it replaced on the second night of my stay which was kind of an ordeal. First off the phone by my bed DIDNT WORK. It was an old 1990's desk phone and was off the hook. The only phone that worked was the phone in the bathroom , again thank goodness for accessible features. But I should only have to use the bathroom phone in case of emergency, why have the phone on the table if it didn't work?
So after calling the front desk for another remote...which was staffed by another rude staff member who first accused me of breaking the remote? Then told me to come down to get another one... which in hindsight, when I asked the previous staff member to fetch me kitchen supplies brought them up to me, was annoying... was it really that difficult to get on the elevator to give me what I asked for that malfunctioned at late o clock at night when there weren't anything else going on? And then they hung up on me without at least a courteous goodbye or thank you. Whatever I got the remote and was able to spend the rest of the stay without incident.
So the vibe about this particular ESA is that a lot of people are living there full time as semi homeless, a lot of families and migrant workers and such... no worries but still there are children who make some noise and you can smell cooking in the halls.
The free breakfast I wouldn't count on there is just a small desk that they set out what little items they have and if you don't get it you won't get it. But there is an IHOP across the street and a mall across the road. I came prepared with my own ready to cook food so I didn't have to worry.
I didn't get to check out the laundry facilities or anything else like if there is a gym unlike the other ESA I went to there is no pool.
The layout of the parking lot/entrance was confusing to the uber/lyft folks I hired to take me from the hotel to the venue during my stay you almost have to drive around the whole building to get to the lobby entrance. Its a tight area with barely enough parking.
All in all, its not as good as the other ESA I stayed at, mainly cause the other one was in the main line region of suburban south east PA. but it was suitable for lodging for my vacation and provided amenities that I...
Read moreThis place has become such a disappointment. I arrived here around 1:30 PM and let the front desk clerk know that I was checking in. She responded telling me “we don’t have any vacancy” So I told her I had a reservation. She then tells me “well, you can’t check in and you need to wait until 3 PM to check in. Understandable, but she didn’t tell me what the reason was other than it was “check in policy “ If it were something like they don’t have clean rooms available and they were still waiting for other guests to check out that would have been acceptable. Clearly she didn’t care that I had been traveling since the early morning and needed to sleep. I didn’t have plans until 6 PM. So I asked can I at least use the restroom? She says “we don’t have a public restroom” even though I have used a restroom at this location before.
So after being forced to leave, I came back that evening and was checked in. To my surprise, I was asked for a $150 security deposit. One of the main reasons I’ve stayed at ESA is because they didn’t ask for a security deposit. So I go into the room and the room had not been cleaned by housekeeping !! I called the front desk and let them know they checked me into a dirty room. So of course I had to pack everything up and go back to the front lobby and be assigned another room. I didn’t even get so much as an apology or any acknowledgment that the room wasn’t clean. She just asked me for the key card back and then handed me another set of cards. Horrible customer service and terrible attitude.
I get into the new room and called back to asked for a set of dishes, then they call the room asking me what I did with the set of dishes that I was given. I had left them in the other room because they were completely soaking wet and wrapped in a plastic bag and I certainly wasn’t about to use them. so I go down to the front desk to ask can they just give me just a few of the items that I needed for the room because I did not need all of the things that I had been given previously. And then through gritted teeth and a phony smile, she says “well this young lady behind me already prepared these items for you so if you could just accept them” in the most condescending tone of voice. This whole place is just gross and completely disgusting. Really shocked and disappointed...
Read more"The projects." That's what my husband called this place because the care and maintenance mirrored that of many of the public housing projects in the NYC area. The exterior grounds are filthy, with trash all over. Upon entering and walking down hallways on the first and fourth floors there was an abundance of trash on the floor.
The room key didn't work and we had to get a replacement. The refrigerator was old and rusty. The room we were given was dirty. The tub had residue in it and the room was extremely dusty. I went to the front desk and asked for cleaning products because I wanted to stay in a clean room and was willing to do it myself (taking the path of least resistance and I didn't trust them to get it right). The front desk staff were quick to assist me and offered to move us to another room. They also sent housekeeping up to our room, and they walked in without knocking-walked right in on my husband! He thought I was returning to the room, but it was housekeeping. As they looked around the room, they kept saying that the room was clean. When I got back to our room, I showed housekeeping the residue in the bathroom. He acted like he didn't see anything. I mentioned that we were moving rooms and he couldn't get out of there fast enough!
The key worked in our replacement room. The refrigerator was nice and clean. The room was generally clean except that every surface was very dusty. The amount of dust was at least a week old. I took some tissues and dusted all the surfaces. The bed was comfortable and our room was mostly acceptable.
The smell of marijuana in the hallways was evident. Our neighbor kept their TV on all night, which, thankfully, didn't bother us. I bought my own toilet tissue because I knew that housekeeping wasn't going to come to our room, and frankly, I didn't want them to.
We travel OFTEN and have lodged in MANY hotels. This Extended Stay America was the absolute worst hotel. We are not picky people, which is the reason we did not cancel upon arriving and experiencing disappointment immediately. The furnishings are old and run down. The clientele are questionable. Hubby told me not to lean on the walls in the elevator. This hotel is unacceptable. It really is...
