Alaska Aurora Adventure: The Most Local Experience First off, I'm pretty lazy and afraid of not getting the most out of my trip, so this itinerary was all planned by an Alaska travel expert. About the Aurora 💛 Alaska's aurora season is from September to April, with the highest chance of seeing them in February and March. However, whether the aurora is beautiful or not depends on the weather and luck. I saw a massive aurora display on one of the seven nights I was there, which was incredibly satisfying. As for aurora prediction websites, they're not very accurate 😛. About Transportation 💛 San Francisco - Seattle - Fairbanks, I booked the flights on Ctrip, round trip for around 3000 RMB. For those planning to drive, you can rent a car, but be very careful as the icy roads can be slippery, and snow chains are almost useless here. About Accommodation (Cabin + Hotel) 💛 You can find cabins on Airbnb, which are very convenient for aurora viewing. In the city, I recommend the "Wedgewood Resort"—great value for money, with rooms that are one bedroom, one living room, one bathroom, and one kitchen, very spacious and practical. About Clothing 💛 In temperatures as low as -20°C or even -30°C, the warmer the clothes, the better. Hats, gloves, and heat packs (for yourself and your phone or camera if it gets too cold) are essential. The coldest part is your feet, so make sure to get a pair of warm, snow-proof boots. Don't even think about UGGs 😑—they're not snow boots, and I once ruined both my shoes and myself by stepping into the snow with them. I got my snow boots on Taobao, lined and snow-proof for just over 200 RMB. About Activities 💛 "Reindeer Snow Walk" (Cover)—One of my favorite activities, walking with a herd of reindeer in the snowy forest. Limited spots daily, so book in advance at https://runningreindeer.com. "Shinzo Maeda Hike" (Pic 4)—Hiking in a mysterious snowfield where the famous Japanese wildlife photographer often roamed. Very beautiful, no entrance fee, address to be updated later. "Fly Over the Arctic Circle" (Pic 5)—Taking a small plane into the Arctic Circle to the town of Coldfoot, watching the aurora in the Arctic Circle, sending postcards, and driving on one of the world's most dangerous roads. Many itineraries are available on Taobao, safe and hassle-free. "Chena Hot Springs" (Pic 6)—Soaking in a hot spring in the middle of snow, with an ice museum next door where you can drink. Website: https://chenahotsprings.com/. "Ice Fishing" and "Dog Sledding"—No need to introduce these, they're everywhere in Alaska, and you can find many options on Taobao. About Food 💛 Beijing Hot Pot Address: 1694 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99701 Lin's Garden (Chinese Stir-fry) Address: 1900 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99701 Thai House (Thai Restaurant) Address: 412 5th Ave, Fairbanks, AK 99701 The Cookie Jar (Famous Local American Breakfast) Address: 1006 Cadillac Ct, Fairbanks, AK 99701 AK Buffet (Alaska King Crab) Address: 414 3rd St, Fairbanks, AK 99701 About Shopping 💛 "Fur Shop" (Pic 7)—A fur shop run by a local hunter. Although it goes against environmental ethics, hunting is common here. Prices are very reasonable, a complete and beautiful fox fur for under 400 USD, and a complete reindeer blanket for 140 USD. Address: 4106 Boat St, Fairbanks, AK 99709. "Canada Goose"—Since Alaska is tax-free, those who haven't fully equipped themselves for the cold can buy what they need here. Address: 1512 S Cushman St, Fairbanks, AK 99701. Aurora #Alaska #AuroraChasingAdventure 🤪That's all for now, I'

A Far Cry from a Resort Experience Our recent stay was profoundly disappointing. What was advertised as a resort felt more like a poorly maintained apartment complex. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the property was neglected, with multiple maintenance issues requiring immediate attention. One significant problem involved the bathroom fan, which was eventually fixed. However, the maintenance worker left behind a considerable mess that we had to clean ourselves, adding to our frustration. Inside the unit, the couches were incredibly stiff and uncomfortable, making it impossible to relax and enjoy the living space. We couldn't even bring ourselves to sit on them for long periods. The issues extended to the entertainment, as the TV didn't work at all. When we inquired at the front desk, we were given a bewildering response that this was simply "the way it was in Fairbanks" – an unacceptable excuse for a supposed resort. The internet was painfully slow, making even basic Browse a chore. Cleanliness was another major concern. The linens were dirty, forcing us to request a fresh blanket. To top it off, the coffee pot was crusty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the 1970s. We quickly decided it was better to buy coffee out rather than attempt to use such an unhygienic appliance. Overall, this was a far cry from a relaxing or enjoyable resort experience. The lack of basic amenities, cleanliness, and functional items, combined with unhelpful responses, left us thoroughly unimpressed. We would not recommend this "resort."

The rooms are very outdated. I felt like I was stepping back to 1976 every time I entered my room. The wallpaper, carpet and furniture looked antique. However, everything in the room was functional and not broken. This was surprising because it's old but still well maintained. If you are into stepping back in time, feeling nostalgic, or just like the design of the 70s then this hotel is perfect for you. If you were born in a more modern generation, it will feel like staying here is just like staying at your grandmother's house. 🏚️ Housekeeping sucks a little. They don't come to your room everyday. Don't even bother asking the front desk if you can have housekeeping come up to your room because they stick with their schedule and most likely will not accommodate. 🧹 Everything else is fine. Laundry rooms are great. Their laundry machines only take specific tokens that they sell at the front desk. A token is $3 each. 1 token will get you 30 min wash time or 45 min dryer time. So that's $6 a load of laundry... Yikes 😬. The gym is okay. They have 2 old treadmills, ellipticals, bike machine, some weights and a cable machine. The gym has no AC so in the summer it gets warm in there 🥵. There is only one window AC unit per room and it's located in the bedroom. No AC in the common areas so it gets warm there in the summer.

Wedgewood not only met all my expectations, it exceeded those expectations tenfold. It was only my second time in Alaska and I was in town for about a week, so I was naturally worried about how to find my way around and such; luckily, however, I found that the resort proved an excellent resource for all of my needs.

Transportation: One of Wedgewood's greatest accommodations is that they offered a free shuttle to pick me up from the airport upon my arrival and to drive me back a week later for my departure. For a worrisome traveler like me, this was a huge relief. Moreover, it was the heart of winter during my stay, with colder temperatures than my northeastern body was used to; therefore, the resort staff ensured that the shuttles were also available for transportation around the resort for guests who had under-packed or who were not prepared to face the snow or the cold. These accommodations made a huge difference in making my trip as easy and comfortable as possible.

Staff. Upon my arrival the first night, I found the front desk clerk to be extremely welcoming and conversational, which was just the welcome I needed after flying for 17 hours on 3 separate airplanes to get to Fairbanks. He offered me advice on how to handle the cold, how to rent a car and prevent the engine from dying, and what were the best local attractions to visit during my stay. I found that this was not a one time incident; from the shuttle drivers, to the cleaning staff, to everyone I crossed paths with across the resort, every single person was willing to answer my questions and lend a helping hand where they could. This positive and helpful atmosphere is one of the things that makes Wedgewood so great.

The Rooms. Having booked a room with 2 beds, I thought we would be staying in a small space with a single bathroom and perhaps a small closet, and for there to be room for not much else. I was pleasantly surprised when my friend and I opened the door to find a living space that was much larger than expected. There was a huge bedroom with two beds, as well as an enormous walk in closet with hangers and shelving for all of the luggage we had dragged with us across the country. There was additionally a HUGE living area, completely furnished with two couches, a television, an incredible view, and more outlets than I ever realized I needed. The bathroom was also quite a nice size, and the water temperature adjusted very quickly, which was a huge relief after coming home from long days in the cold. The cleaning staff came every morning and were extremely pleasant and thorough, and I felt really well attended to throughout my entire stay. The beautiful room and attentive staff definitely made me feel at home and removed the stress of cleanliness from my mind.

Attractions at the Resort. Last but not least, there are a number of attractions right there on the resort that were within walking distance and provided some great local options for activities. First, the trails around the resort leading into the woods out back connect to the Creamers Field State Game Refuge and Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary, which offered an extremely scenic walk with beautiful views, particularly as the sun set. A little further beyond lay a lake, where we went late in the night to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis; it was a really fantastic sight. Finally, perhaps the most impressive attraction located on the property: the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. Probably one of the world's best collections of vintage cars, and complemented by fashion from the era, this is a must see and alone offers a reason to stay at Wedgewood. Stepping into the museum felt like stepping back in time, and the guided tours are absolutely fantastic. It was the best attraction I visited during my entire stay.

Overall, I had an amazing experience both in Fairbanks itself and at the Wedgewood resort. I am happy that I already know where to stay the next...

Not, definitely NOT a resort! This is a rundown apartment complex from the 80s badly in need of renovation, but I give two stars because the trails around the wildlife refuge are very nice to walk.|The worst thing about the property is that it is supposed to be nonsmoking and after walking and lugging our luggage upstairs to an already not- great smelling hallway with untidy housekeeping cart and towels and bedding strewn on the hall carpet from maids working on an open room we open the door to our two bedroom suite and it was like walking into an ashtray.|The smell hits you in the face so strong and horrible with stale smoke like the previous people, or previous hundred people, had been chain smoking. This was a nasty, smelly shock when we were expecting a non-smoking room. We asked to be moved to another room and they did and that one also smelled strongly of smoke but not as bad as the first one. It should be made clear and imperative to housekeeping staff that if they walk in to clean a room that smells of smoke that should not have been smoked in it needs to be immediately reported to management so that they can do an ozone treatment on it before it is booked again though after years, and currently being smoked in I don't know if anything would really clear that stink. I have never before booked a non-smoking room anywhere and walked in to have it smelling like smoke. They should just give up on advertising these as nonsmoking rooms.|Another problem is that it's oil heated, and the boiler tapped all night, interfering with sleep. The microwave is worn and looks like it's from the 90s, as do the other kitchen appliances, as does the whole suite, as do the exterior buildings, some of which, clearly visible, are apartment buildings with long-term residence with bicycles and barbecues on the balconies. The shelf paper on the shelves is tattered and worn. The bedspreads are 90s and extremely heavy and fall off the bed. |The main entrance lobby and check-in is nice but then you are sent across the parking lot to your room number which is still signed like the original apartment buildings. There are no elevators so you are dragging your suitcases up stairs. This suite was over $300 per night and we expected much better. The place is not a resort, and our two bedroom "suite" an old two bedroom apartment that had been smoked in for decades. l asked for, and expected the price to be adjusted and they took off $20 per night for the three nights we were there, paying over $1000|total. This was not anywhere near an adequate adjustment. I wish that we had just left immediately upon smelling smoke in a room advertised as nonsmoking, and it is really nervy to be charging resort prices for an old stinky...

In August of 2025, I spent two nights at Wedgewood Resort, having selected it randomly off the Internet, for my first visit to Fairbanks. It is somewhat reasonably priced, offers huge apartment-like rooms and promised a shuttle to/from the airport and train station. Friendly, polite and helpful front desk folks and shuttle driver. Note the doors into the lobby had no automatic open button.||I was picked up promptly at the train station the evening I arrived but the shuttle bus was quite tall and it was very difficult for me to get in and out of it. It would not be feasible for someone in a wheelchair to use the shuttle.||I booked over their web site, requested an accessible room and confirmed on check-in that the room was accessible with a walk-in shower. I was told yes it was accessible and had a walk-in shower. Imagine my surprise when the shuttle driver dropped me off at a building with three steps and no hand railings. That in NO WAY is accessible. The shuttle driver helpfully took my luggage inside and while my unit was on the first floor, there are no elevators. I truly struggled with the steps.||Once inside the unit, it was painfully apparent this is NOT an accessible room. While the living room is quite large, the kitchen counters are standard height. The bathroom is most assuredly not wheelchair accessible and there was no open space under the sink. A wheelchair user couldn't possibly use the toilet, there were no grab bars and the bathroom was quite small, and instead of a walk-in shower, there was a tub with two grab bars. There was no shower chair or transfer board. You could possibly get a wheelchair next to the tall bed but transfers would be extremely difficult.||The property is dated, there is very little in the way of dishes in the kitchen but there is a full-size fridge, oven, microwave and coffeepot. It seemed reasonably clean.||I was told by the shuttle driver that leaving at noon would mean a shuttle driver would be available but alas, that was not the case, and I had to order an Uber for the ride to the airport. Again, there is a disconnect in what employees are telling customers and the reality of how things work.||My challenge to management is to educate your company and your staff on what constitutes an accessible room. It should be ADA compliant on all levels and this means WHEELCHAIR accessible. I requested an accessible room because I struggle with stairs (particularly stairs with no railings), short toilets and no grab bars for the toilets. While you overall have a nice property in spite of the dated rooms, I would not stay here again unless you could assure me of a truly...
