My parents lived here many moons ago and it brings back alot of memories when they stay. Therefor, our family has stayed there many times, and even my spouse and I came to enjoy staying, as well as my siblings and their families, and so on. Unfortunately, as their rates are inconsistent based on which staff member you speak with, my mom always asks to make sure a couple of times what rate she's going to be given. She's been told different rates on several occasions by different staff. Apparently, the management do not like that she asks to confirm the best rate in advance, even though it is a fair question. Her mom just passed away this week and she was her some caretaker, so she hoped to get away for a bit. When she called to set up the reservation today, they told her they no longer want her staying there due to her asking about the rates too often... which wouldn't be an issue if all staff were on the same page. She doesn't argue when the rates don't match up, she just asks if there is a difference based on room or length of stay, etc. Regular questions anyone would reasonably ask to get a better understanding. We were both hoping to stay somewhere that would offer some comfort and familiarity, but that's fine. We will make new memories other places that appreciate those decade (plus) long customers that consistently stay with them and that offer rates which are uniform, regardless of which staff member answers the phone or who is in an unpleasant mood. Disappointing to say the least, especially for a family that is grieving.
Edit: We understand that rates may change, even when it is different based on which staff member answers on the same day. My mother has worked in hotel and rental management for over a decade and is aware of how these factors which is why she asks to confirm. Sadly, this establishment's lack of sincerity (very clear in the response) and attempt to paint the situation inaccurately (there was no dispute, only a request for clarification, and was told almost immediately they'd "rather she not stay there in the future" as though it had already been decided long ago) are no help towards the now stained image we hold of somewhere our entire family and extended family has enjoyed in the past. As someone who has also worked in management, it is unfortunate that Casa Del Mar and their management do not value the customers who have history both renting and staying with them for over thirty years, nor do they express any empathy in their response, but again, that is fine. New places, new memories. To new potential customers, I encourage you to seek to stay elsewhere that your business will be valued more than this....
Read moreWhat This Hotel Is: Close to beach and a pier with fishing Great "home base" with kitchen, utensils, pots, pans and cooking tools, fridge, etc Great for families Decent parking Walking distance from a few family-friendly, affordable establishments Walking distance from Kroger
What This Hotel Is Not: A destination for a romantic weekend for a couple looking for great dining options Anyone looking to spoil themselves Walking distance from Paradise Pier Walking distance from moderate to upscale dining A hotel that provides daily housekeeping or additional amenities (such as an ice bucket)
Overall, I wouldn't say this hotel provided a bad experience by any means. It just wasn't what was expected at all. The pools were really small. There is no housekeeping service daily. Decent dining options are NOT within walking distance or close by. Paradise Pier is an hour walk from the hotel one way. Many of the other hotel occupants were loud yelling in the hallways and such. It is very dated and there is nothing modern about this hotel but I wouldn't say it was run down persay. They had brass keys, and the door knobs are different on every door. If I were going to cook and get groceries this would have been a better fit since they have all the amenities for that but I was hoping to spoil myself and relax so it just wasn't the best fit for what I was looking for. We ordered Ubereats, but it took an hour to get delivered because of how far off the hotel is from everything.
The service was alright. No one was unwelcoming, and no one was really welcoming. They just really went thru the motions of checking you in and out. They didn't really go the extra mile, and focus was lacking on the hospitality aspect of the day to day.
Perhaps in the future, for a family trip, I would stay here again in the future. The research we did on the hotel before booking didn't really seem to be in line with our experience here. We just felt like what we paid for was not worth the experience we got. We could've stayed somewhere else for a comparable price and received the hotel experience we were...
Read moreWe rented a room here as an air bnb, check in was 4 and check out by noon. We paid an extra $40 to park there which wasn't a huge deal. The location is great and easy to find but the parking lot has some very steep spots that may not get along well with low vehicles.
When we got to our room shortly after 4:30, there were towels on the floor, fries on the floor, the bedsheets were all balled up on the beds and there was still somebody else's hair on the pillows. We contacted the person through airbnb that the room had not been cleaned, he told us he would send someone and we went out to grab food and watch the sunset anyway, when we reached out after not hearing from him for a few hours he said the room was now clean.
After the first night, the person I was with woke up with red bumps all over his arms, chest, shoulders, and back. I had regular mosquito bites from the day before, but nothing like the bumps on him. They took several days to go away, but apparently did not itch and my best guess is it could be a reaction to the soap they use for laundry- all the beds seemed very clean around the mattress seams and I couldnt find anything that might have meant bed bugs so we are fairly confident it wasnt that.
Only other issue was the pool temperature. They said the one closest to us was heated. It was a good temperature for a pool for kids to play in but the day before we wanted to use it they added water and the hot tub and pool were the same temperature, we sat out there for less than 10 minutes before we were shivering and cold in the hot tub. Some other guests getting in as we left said that was not the case the few nights before they had been sitting in it which means we probably just got unlucky on which day we picked to go in there.
Overall, the room was cute and the view of the ocean was pleasant, we were able to sleep with the patio doors open and listen to the waves. The patio had chairs and a wagon and cooler to take to the beach but they didnt look in the best shape...
