The Hotel Phillips Kansas City is a good place to stay that is walking distance to the T-mobile Center in the heart of the Power and Light district. Situated in a historic building from the 30's, the lobby is beautiful with remnants of a bygone era consisting of leather, chrome and other beautiful furnishings.
The location is a couple of blocks from the T-mobile Center and steps from movie theaters, bars, shops and a huge grocery store. A quiet area when there are no events at the Center but quite busy during concerts and other events.
The rooms are small and old but well maintained. Some have good views and the three elevators, though old, run well. The gym is also very small with some dumbbells, treadmill and water dispenser. Small but enough for a light workout.
Tavernnova is the restaurant on the premises and they have an excellent breakfast that is both fresh and tasty. The staff is very attentive and professional with great attitudes. Our one regret is that we did not have time to dine outside of breakfast.
For the most part, this was a nice hotel that was in a convenient location and had a beautiful lobby. Though not one to complain, the next section may feel pretentious as I would like to bring up some negative points of the hotel for those of us who are Diamond members and expect a bit more exceptional service.
The front desk was very curt and did not acknowledge our status as Diamond Members. We were placed in the smallest room with a partial view on the 6th floor. It was the end of March and the hotel was not booked fully. I went on their reservation website and found many options still available. Further, when I asked for a complimentary upgrade later in the evening, based on our room being a bit small and dirty, I was told that it was not possible without further explanation.
In addition, the "lounge" with mid afternoon appetizers was a tiny room that had no windows and could probably facilitate 8-10 people at most. The "appetizers" consisted of small bags of Chex Mix, some Granola Bars and Gummi Bear type fruit snacks. All items you would find in a primary grade student's lunch box! There was one hot plate that was left openly exposed. Bottled drinks, however, were plentiful with Cranberry juice, sodas, and water. Honestly, the set up was not only appalling but insulting.
Overall, a good place to sleep and walk to events when visiting Kansas City along with...
Read moreOkay so I waited until my entire stay was over to write this review. It's a long one so just bare with me.
I booked a weekend stay in a room with King size bed for my husbands birthday. I originally did not look at reviews and based my reservation on the 4 star status of the hotel. The room was 230 a night. Upon getting there on Friday afternoon we noticed the valet was slightly backed up due to having two drivers working that night but was not a big deal. Once at the check out we received an upgrade as the king beds in regular rooms were unavailable. The elevators were slow but once inside it was the darkest scariest elevator I've ever been in. Finally made it to the room and the room was dusty. On Friday the speakeasy and restaurant closed early due to being understaffed which was a real inconvenience. Saturday morning I woke u to a bug crawling next to my face! I told the staff about all of the problems and was credited for one night's stay. We did not do the breakfast as I thought at 20 dollars per person it would be restaurant styled breakfast but it was a buffet and soooo many people were touching the food. We went to the speakeasy later that afternoon and found that there was hardly any lighting at all and it was quite expensive for the drinks which were okay. Overall it was not awful but definitely not what I expected for the original price, and not somewhere I would ever stay again.
The best part about the hotel was the location and the staff. Those who were there worked hard and remained friendly even though they were clearly understaffed. The lead valet driver is amazing and the manager of the hotel is super dope.
The worst part about the hotel is the design. I get it was going for like a 1930s art deco concept but honestly the designer really missed the mark. It comes off as tacky opposed to timeless. This sentiment was shared by multiple quest whom I chatted with while staying. Also the darkness provides some coverage to the fact that the hotel was not the cleanest. Being understaffed has really been detrimental to the upkeep of this place. Most of the velvet surfaces are.covered in so much dust. Honestly I think the Hilton should invest in redoing the design of the place, make it brighter.
Also it sucked to not have access to where they park the cars. But that was for...
Read morePros: We had a wonderful time and were very pleased with the room initially - great view, peaceful, overall clean, and quiet. Wonderful location - walking distance to the downtown things to do but we weren't bothered by noise from P&L (even on a Hot Country Nights night). We upgraded to a corner room with a tub and it was relaxing. The valet workers were quick and pleasant. When we called asking for extra pillows, they were at our room in a prompt amount of time. Staff we encountered were all very kind and professional.
Cons: When it came time to sleep, the bed was very unpleasant to sleep in causing both my wife and I to have terrible nights sleep. It seemed like it'd be cozy with how cloud-like it was and the down pillows, yet we were falsely mistaken. I chose to sleep by the door and you could tell that side of the bed was very worn down if not broken - specifically by the headboard. Throughout the night, I had two pillows and my head was still at a downward slope - multiple times my head was in between the bed and the bed frame. I ended up sleeping with my feet hanging off the bed and my head a few feet below where it should be to get some sleep. My wife's side of the bed was a little better but still uncomfortable. The pillows deflated pretty quickly; so either bring your own if you want neck support or room service some extras. The lack of sleep due to the bed's downward slope is the main reason for the low stars. Location con: Parking only had one option provided by the hotel (valet). If you didn't valet, you had to find public parking. The valet price per night was $45 - a lot higher than the public garage fees. We chose to pay the fee, though, for security vs. public parking garages that tend to get broken into. Rooms did not have a mini fridge. Not a deal breaker but also not convenient for left overs or snacks. The carpets could use a cleaning (a questionable stain on the carpet in our room - iykyk). I wouldn't suggest the complimentary coffee in the lobby - very weak and tased mainly like water. I'd suggest going next door to Made in KC if you want coffee in...
