My husband and I are fond of Alaska fishing and have fished the Alaska Kenai Peninsular for several years. This is our first time visiting Ketchikan. We had a good trip considering we were a better performing boat than others coming back with fish on both days of fishing. We went out with Baranof Fishing Excursions. We limited out on halibut on both days with one of 31", two of 25" and one 20" baby. We also caught three good size cod the first day. No Salmon. Total roughly 55 lbs. of fish.|When we got off the boat and were told that Cedars Lodge would process our fish and they are good. We had no reason to doubt based on our experience in Kenai. Boy, were we wrong about that. When we picked up the frozen fish prior to departure, we were charged for 21lbs. We weighed the fish when we got home. The exact weight is 14 Lbs.4 Oz. out of 55 lbs. of fish (25% of live weight) The box was held in a shipping container outside that did not appear to be refrigerated. We asked what the temperature of the fish was when we picked it up. The employee did not know what the fish had been frozen to. Filets were already thawed out only after a short plane ride from Ketchikan to Seattle. In the past we have flown from Anchorage to Virginia and our fish was still frozen.|The exchange between Baranof and Cedars were not transparent. Fish were not weighed nor separated for fishing parties. |Words of caution, if you want to bring home fish, you may want to bring a scale or process...
Read moreWhen you fish with Baranof Excursions, they don't have a scale in their marina so you really can only guess the weight of your catch (which is not marked) and they use Cedars Lodge as their processor, where they deliver the catch for you. There were cleaning tables in the marina so you can ask whether you can do it there by yourselves.. It appears CL to be the solo processor for the public in the town.||I was not able to obtain the prices, only after I picked up the well prepared frozen fish on the way of my departure. The processing costs are (June 2021) per pound of processed fish Fresh $2.25/Smoke $4.25/Cut&Vac $2.25/Vac&Freeze $1.95/Vac only $1.80/freeze only $1.80.||This is more than e.g. in Seward. When your catch is mainly cod, it makes you think twice whether it is worth to process the fish and ship it home, this is why I was possibly given some catch by other people on the charter.||If I would come again, I would bring some plastic bags and hand scale to have more insight in the process. Also, I did NOT leave my credit card complete info incl. security code on the CL form handed to us after arrival from the charter but this may be the only option for people who can't pick up the processed fish and are shipping home using Fedex (a...
Read moreWe when to Alaska to celebrate or 20 year wedding anniversary and stayed at the Cedars Lodge. I will tell you I can't even git our review justice with a 5 review. From the moment we arrived in alaska we had a personal shuttle waiting for us and the driver loaded our luggage and took us to the hotel where we were greeted by Michael who was the rep we made the arrangements with. he had set up up with all kinds of activities (we were not big on fishing everyday) We did fish one day and it was extraordinary our Guide took us out about an hour and we caught our limit of Silver Salmon with in just a few hours the we moved to another spot to catch habitat and caught our limit both in size and quantity with in 2 1/2 hours. on our way back we were talking and i mention I was hoping to see whales and he took a detour just so i could spot a few (Above and Beyond) Other Activities included a Crab Feast at the George Inlet Lodge & a Flight See Tour of the Falls. Overall I would highly recommend this Lodge and the Fishing trip. Especially if you are a fisherman. I can't fathom how much fish we would have caught if we were to go out again.
PS The Lodge also have Breakfast & Dinner for us everyday prepared by an awesome chef. She always had great...
