Tl:Dr Beautiful and spacious and at a good price but disappointed at the closed pool, dirty floors/walls, BYO-Soap, and especially the mice.
I really, wanted to leave this place with a 5-star review because it's a super cool place. However, frustrations during our stay whittled away at those stars.
The good: The place is BEAUTIFUL. Everything is recently refinished and updated. Our suite was gigantic and had plenty of space for us to rattle around. The main bedroom was closed off from the rest of the suite so it was nice to have some privacy. The fit and finish of the suite were fantastic. The kitchen was well appointed with name brand appliances and plenty of dishes to do whatever cooking we needed. The location was great. It was close to amenities and some attractions but it was far enough away from the chaos of the OBX that we could retreat to quietness when we needed to. The staff, for the most part, were extremely nice and communicated well when needed.
Alright, now the not-so-good: When we pulled up to the building, the first thing we noticed is that it isn't fully a "Hotel". I think most of the rooms are accessible from the outside as is with "Motels". Not a big deal but it seemed a bit contrary to what was advertised. The second thing was that the hotel is not one building. Rather, it's a compound of multiple buildings connected by narrow, poorly maintained paths. At times we weren't sure if we were driving on the sidewalks or the driveways. The building we were in was the farthest from the concierge and our room was on the second floor, up a set of narrow, creaky stairs. As stated above, the room was huge and well appointed, but it wasn't particularly clean. Dust bunnies and hair scattered the floors. Streaks of brown ran down the ceiling and walls in the bathroom, and a half dozen Otter-Pop wrappers were found under the hide-a-bed. The bedroom door didn't close no matter how hard we put our shoulder into it and the entry door would close if we gave it a hard shove but it was pretty loud. As for the nonexistent vent in the bathroom, condensation would cover EVERYTHING to the point where it would drip on you as you were trying to dry off from a shower. Brown streaks ran down the ceiling and walls and collected in puddles on the baseboard. When we arrived, we found that there was no hand soap in the bathroom or kitchen, nor was there any dish soap in the kitchen, though there was dish washer detergent. We talked to the cleaning lady, who happened to be nearby and she told us that, "it should be there, but we may have to go buy our own". I contacted the front desk and the concierge confirmed that it was unavailable and we would have to venture out and buy our own. Odd thing to have to do for yourself at a hotel. Lastly, the kitchen/dining room garbage was just a small bin so we had to empty it once or twice. One night we needed to empty it so we pulled the bag out, tied it off and set it alongside the bin so we could take it out the next morning. Unfortunately we forgot to take it out before we left for our day's activities and when we returned that evening, we found evidence that a rodent had been helping itself to our to-go containers. I contacted the front desk to let them know of the uninvited guest and ask what we could do with the bag of garbage. The response was wholly unapologetic and merely told me to take it across the compound to the dumpster. It was already very dark and the path was not illuminated but I didn't want to tempt the critter another night so I felt my way across the compound to the dumpster. More things I would not expect to have to worry myself with when renting a hotel. Finally, as others have stated, the beautiful pool was still closed. Not a big deal to me, though it was advertised, and the kids were pretty disappointed. Also the WiFi was almost unusable.
All in all, it was a beautiful place to stay and at a decent value. I just wish I hadn't had to deal with the...
Read moreOur stay was pre-booked on a company card, and upon arrival we were asked to provide a card for the $50 damage deposit. Instead, my personal card was charged for the entirety of the stay. When this was brought to the attention of the front desk staff, they told me the manager would be able to fix it and left him a note. Checking in later that night, the manager had not fixed it as he was busy talking to the police about another incident. Checking the next day, it was still not fixed. Another note was left for the manager. The third day at checkout the issue was still not resolved, and the front desk staff was unable to do anything to remedy the situation. The manager was "in a meeting" and would not come out to assist, despite the desk staff saying he was the only one with the power to do so. We stood at the front desk for AN HOUR trying to fix this situation before giving up and paying with our personal cards. During this time I tried to reach the manager repeatedly at his posted direct line, and he never picked up.
When I arrived to my room it was filthy - there were hairs on the nightstand, the bed was unmade, there were towels on the floor and a wet one still hanging in the bathroom. Speaking with another member of my group, his room was in a similar state. After speaking with the front desk staff they had our rooms cleaned while out for dinner, but I question the thoroughness of the cleaning. You could still see streaks on the cabinet as though someone wiped it down in a hurry, and the floors had a slick, almost greasy feeling as though they put down too much cleaner and didn't completely mop it up. That may have just been humidity from the A/C, but after seeing the state the room was in when I arrived I am inclined to assume the worst. Would not recommend going barefoot.
UPDATE: It took 4 hours after we left to finally get a call back from the manager, where he explained the credit card issues were due to a recent change in their system over to Wyndham's. I understand that technical issues happen, but that should not fall on me as a customer. There was another couple checking out at the same time with similar concerns about their credit cards, so this is not an isolated issue.
SECOND UPDATE: My card was charged twice for this stay, so now I have $600 in pending charges rather than $300, which was bad enough. The manager informed me that I would have to contact my bank, which was COMPLETELY incorrect - speaking to my bank representative they are unable to reverse pending charges, and that must be done by the vendor. When I tried to call back to tell him this, the manager did...
Read moreIve stayed at this location tons of times over the years as a guest and also a live in under previous management as well as new management. I personally love the renovations. I wish the little cook tops came with a couple more dishes but its not the end of the world. (They seemed to have fixed this) They have a gigantic pool with a very interesting lay out plus it's salt water. I really like Kelly at the front desk bc she is helpful and I also had the pleasure of meeting Charlene the housekeeper. She was nice and helpful as always. I wasn't really thrilled with the third shift front desk agent at all.(Appears to be a different staff member and much nicer but i only heard her voice this time).. I also politely tried to tell her about the backdwimmers that had taken up residence in the Salt pool and she didn't even try to pretend to retain the information. The most recent management hire also seems to need a little training on what to expect regarding occupancy from shoulder season to prime season and back to shoulder season. Her first couple of weeks there she refused to allow me to extend ny reservation for 1 more weekend claiming the hotel had been sold out for the upcoming dates. It was flat out false. Perhaps she anticipated a sold out hotel due to an inaccurate prediction however at the point when it was clear it hadn't sold out and not even close she didn't correct the error. I was not paying a reduced amount and also was not on a do not rent list. It goes much better if you just say that it was a prediction rather than a fact. Thst would have made me a lot less offended. Ive stayed a couple more times since then but the rates are always higher than I feel they should be. Hopefully she will learn that playing fair with off season tenants can and will become your bread and butter during winter months so you should make it a point to show them the same respect you show a 4th of July guest. The renovations are only as nice as you're treated by staff and management. Considering the rate is the same as some ocean front accommodations I would provide stellar customer service at a minimum. Firetender is great though and yes they deliver. Update they seem to be making big progress with the latest front desk manager. Oct 2025 stay has been awesome and she has been very helpful. Room clean and...
