NouVines — Restaurant in Manteo

Wonderful wine bar/store in downtown historic Manteo. This is roughly 20 yards past the oldest movie theater in the states.

We were very impressed when we first walked in. Large open floor plan where the wine inventory is on the left with couches, tables, and the wine bar on the right. They kept the original floor tile and brick work from what I was told was the old town pharmacy. You pick up a strong woody scent from the new ceiling construction. The only thing I would do different is extend the bar a bit so you can add a few more seats.

The owners (husband and wife) were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was very impressed with their selection which is ironic considering I hadn’t heard of most of the wines in there. I did sample several them, and you could tell by their excitement they were proud of the wines on site. Many of them were organic hand-picked grapes. There were no mass-produced wines to be found. With that in mind, the prices were incredibly reasonable. Bottles seemed to range from 20 to 400 dollars. Yeah…we didn’t drink any of the $400 bottles. We only popped in for a glass of wine but ended up walking out with a bunch of bottles.

Do you have one of those days that you randomly stumble upon a place that you become completely enamored and defines your visit to a location? My wife and I discovered NouVines on our recent visit to Manteo. And now that we are back home, we already want to return. Excellent wine selection (oh the amount of dry reds available in the middle of sweet wine country!), friendly owners, comfortable location, and a charcuterie and cheese board that made our week.

This was a nice surprise. I was so pleased with the wines, the service and the ambiance, which to me felt casually sophisticated, no pretense—just welcoming, comfortable, great for a special night out. I can see it being equally suitable for date night, friends night, or (21+) family night.

With my limited knowledge of wines, yet strong preferences, they were able to pinpoint several that suited me perfectly. They have a simple system in place to be sure you get as much service, but no more or no less, than you’re interested in! That was a really nice touch.
