We stayed in room 226- I rarely leave any negative reviews, as I like to try to work it out with the place of business first. We arrived late, front desk had already left for the night, someone else in our group got the keys for us. When I called the next morning to be like hey, there are a ton of things wrong with this room, I was met by an emotionless young man, saying, "okay, I'll make sure you get your full deposit back". I mean, I guess? Zero empathy, zero care. We booked two rooms. One was decent- the only issue we had was a dirty extra comforter. Something black hard and crunchy was on it... But the first room... my god. There was a dried bloody mucusy blob on the wall, mildew or mold in the shower ceiling, walls and a blue shelve, rusted shampoo bottles, rusted light fixtures, super dirty door, broken wooden dowel on the window, dirty van in bathroom area, and, a bottle cap behind our bed. That might not sound crazy to y'all, but we were traveling with an adventurous 1 year old who finds EVERYTHING. This room was also tucked away, near a main road. We heard everything. The beds are enclosed in a zipper- clean towels, sheets and blankets. PARKING IS LIMITED. I've stayed in other locations in Monterey before, and I will never return to this one.

Property is aging, new management needs to work on customer service. I've been going to this property for about 25 years (since I was a kid). It's changed owners probably four times in that time. It is in a superb location, close to downtown, the wharf, and Pacific Grove. The indoor pool has always been great. Current ownership got rid of the fireside room and the continental breakfast. Some updates to the rooms have been made, however furniture is showing its age. All of this would really be forgivable with good onsite customer service, however... that was not our experience. Its little things; like a missing extra blanket in our room, and when we dropped in on the office, we were told it should be in our room and to back and check all the drawers again. When we called them from our room, the response was "okay, I'll make a note of that and have someone bring something over..." but nothing ever came. Also, they have limited office hours in the morning (nothing official until 8am) and just generally seem a little too busy to deal with you. There was lot of housekeeping staff around, they just seemed overwhelmed when at or near capacity. If you can look past some little things like that, it's still a great place for a short stay in Monterey.

Indoor swimming pool and spa! One of Monterey's hotel gems along Munras Ave. Stayed here on a weekday night. Look for their retro 50's signage. The first building you see when you pull up is their check in office which is easy to find. Helpful staff. Notice the coffee machine in the lobby because that's the only free food. The rooms are across the parking lot, which is very close. No elevators, so if you have mobility issues, stay on the ground floor. Rooms are easy to find. Upon entering, the rooms are very clean and basic. Microwaves, refrigerators, tv, iron, hairdryer included. Also shampoos and hand soaps! Soft beds, desk and lounge chairs. Stylish bathroom tiles. WiFi is fast. It's very quiet at night, unless you have the inconvenience of a family with kids next door like we had. Location is minutes away from all the sights in Monterrey, in addition to a shopping mall and grocery stores. Easy access to the freeway. If you go swimming, towels are provided. If you're going to book here, ask for a room that faces the ocean because there is actually a view on a clear day! Would stay here again because of the reasonable price.

On 12-7-21 I discovered an extra charge of $75 on our credit card due to a medical condition leaking onto bed sheets.

I placed an extra request for towels on 11/30 when we checked in to prepare for a Situation.

The female owner (that lives there) denied us towels on 11.30.21

They demanded that we had to disclose our medical information in order to get extra towels. (12.7.21)

The female owner disclosed that we had to say our condition at the front desk before check in.

The female on the phone call (around 12:45PM) said we can only adjust the fee if we come back physically (I already checked out by 5AM).

Cameras saw me place the keys around 5:10AM in the Dropbox and they demanded for us to physically be there to appeal the charge.

owners and front desk staff spent from 1pm-2:15pm to justify the fee even though we disclosed the medical condition and explained the situation

Front desk work disclosed "I know he was embarrassed but why didn't he tell us it was due to a medical issue."

The owner said "it's not our job to figure out what happens or call back to explain charges. We just charge the incidental."

The end result was refunding us the cleaning fee and the owner saying we can never stay there again.

We have been blacklisted over an embarrassing medical condition because they didn't want to accommodate our request for extra towels on 11.30.21 check in and only gave extra after the incident on 12.6.21

At this point I've been embarrassed and insulted over a medical condition.

At no time did they show compassion.

They had the audacity to demand that "if you came to the front desk and apologize during the incident we would have possibly considered avoiding the $75 fee"

Unacceptable. I told them that under no circumstances should I need to apologize for a medical incident. We left tip for the housekeepers and apologized to them for needing to clean our toilet. The house keepers really took care of us there.

However the desk agent on Tuesday check in, desk agent on Saturday, owner that lives their and desk agent on checkout have poor communication skills no conflict resolution displayed , refused to call to disclose the fee.

They wanted a person to come back physically to ask for the clean up fee back.

In addition, we took pictures of the place before we checked in because of the previous reviews of this place adding fees without resolving the conflict or showing human sympathy.

On a side note, there is a laundromat on site that you can pay $6 or so if you have a incident or just need to clean items on the trip.

There is a heater and air conditioning which is rare.

The walls are thin but it provides a decent night's rest

Do not book this hotel for business (only for leisure) The WiFi is not password protected. Anyone walking by can use the WiFi. I was afraid to login to the WiFi to risk sensitive information of my work on the network.

The refused to verify the story with the housekeepers who cleaned our bathroom everyday of our stay. The front desk work said the housekeepers would have taken pictures…. I replied that no one in the right mind who’s job is to clean who take pictures of the consistency of what goes into the bowl to study. They just clean.

They refused to call the desk agent who was off to verify why she never called or felt the need to ask if we were okay.

The front desk agent currently said, “Im not her. I don’t know what’s in her head. I’m not calling her on her day off.”

This incident happened 3 days prior to check out so there were slight inconveniences but not inconveniencing any new check ins.

This is a lesson on working on communication skills from the entire staff.

In order to restore my faith in your hospitality requires to many characters beyond this...

When they say, "LOW KEY, " in the advertisement, they actually mean to say, "LOW BUDGET." DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

I can say that I am being VERY generous in giving this hotel '1'star. We enjoyed our stay previously, and thought it to be a decent place but they MUST have changed management.

  1. Though on a previous stay we were not required to give a deposit, we were told it had been hotel policy to provide a $250.00 deposit which was NOT explained while booking.
  2. The hotel was supposed to provide candles for the candle holders which, we're empty aside from the residual candle wax that looked like it had been left in/on, around and dripped down the holders for and extensive amount of time. Including, wax that had been dripped all over the furniture and marble finishing for the Jacuzzi tub.
  3. The bathroom light did not work: When we called the front desk, they did send a maintenance man to look at it and who told us he had to repair a fuse. We were then told by Alexandria (nightclerk) that she could give us extra candles or a flashlight to use while we were in the bathroom. Which we refused of course.
  4. The room was extremely dirty and had we not driven so far to come for a weekend getaway in Monterey, we would not have stayed: The carpet had NUMEROUS spills stains and dirt spots; the bed skirt to the bed had black marks dripping down it (obviously unchanged); the tables were stained and dirty; the walls were dirty; the telephone had black fingerprints on it; the little set of miniature stairs that one uses for getting up into the bed had black spill drippings on it as well; In addition to, the lounge chair having black spill stains.

Immediately upon check in, we confronted the night clerk Alexandria with our issues and who informed us that she did not have a phone to take pictures nor be contacted at. Other than the office phone. She also claimed her manager was out of town and could not be reached. REALLY unusual for a business to NOT have an emergency contact and leave clerks running the business establishment without a manger or other recourse. We were told that she would call her manager and give us an email link were we could make a formal complaint. As, the night went on, we waited and never received a phone call from either Alexandria or the manager. We continually contacted the office over the evening to which she refused to answer the hotel desk phone. After several calls, we went to the office and she was gone. The next morning, we were given the same excuse and still have not been contacted by management regarding our greviences. Clearly, we were given the run around and are going through all the proper channels to prevent someone else from being ripped off by this...

My wife & I wanted to spend the weekend in Monterey and visit a few places nearby. I can't comment on the reviews of this place regarding the service, as I didn't find those reviews helpful. My experience was not pleasant. The room looked clean, but that's about it. You know the saying, "looks can be deceiving"? This was one of those times. Check-in was easy, but parking was a problem. At first, we had parking in front of our room, but when we went to explore Monterey and have dinner, we came back around 7:30 p.m. to find the parking lot was full. There was no room to park, so we had to park next to the office. There was one spot that was reserved for handicapped, but the lady told me to park there anyway. Aside from the parking issue, we wanted to use the pool area and jacuzzi. The lady at the front desk told us not to take towels from our room to the pool area because they pool area had their own towels. However, when we got to the pool area, they were out of towels. Additionally, there were a bunch of kids jumping and screaming in the pool, which was very noisy and annoying. The jacuzzi was okay, but it had a strange smell, like a wet dog. We didn't spend much time in there and went back to our room drenched in water because there were no towels to dry off and it was cold outside. When we got to our room and took a shower, the water in the shower did not drain properly. It seemed like the shower was not level, so the water was stagnant and just sitting there. We had to kick it with our feet and push it with our feet to make it go down the drain. It was quite frustrating. No wonder the room smelled like mold. We used one of the towels to wipe up the water that we had dragged in from the pool area, and the towel turned black. This made us think that maybe the floors were not mopped properly. We finally lay down to go to sleep, but the bed was so hard that it made a sound every time we rolled over. It was difficult to sleep. The pillows were also very soft and didn't provide enough support for our heads. To top it all off, light came in through the blinds, making it hard to sleep. My wife and I woke up around 5:00 a.m. after a restless night of tossing and turning. The bed was simply not comfortable. We were supposed to spend another day in Monterey, but we decided to go...
