Servers were very kind. (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
If the menu was condensed they'd do better financially; service time would be quicker, customer turn around would be higher, and items could be more affordable thus creating an incentive for greater orders and higher spending from customers would occur more frequently. Having a current menu posted online would also have a positive impact on the "call-in orders preferred". (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻
Service time was too long; it was less busy than usual, but I had to wait 45 minutes for my meal. ┐( ˘_˘)┌
The rice-to-fish ratio is not good and the rice was overcooked. I heard customers who walked past me, leaving the store, say the "food was so disgusting". I don't think it was that bad, but I've had better. I felt the menu items were overpriced given the quality, location, and the fact that you could get better quality all-you-can-eat sushi elsewhere for the price of two rolls from...
Read moreI found their menu online when hunting for vegetarian options in Monterey when my dad visited last year, and was amazed to see so many traditional Japanese dishes that you never find ANYWHERE in the USA. I am crushed that it took me this long to actually make it in, and will be spending the rest of my Central Coast existence making up for lost time! Best katsu curry I've had in 20 years, the small sampling of sushi I tried was amazing (and FAR better priced than any of the other places I've found in Monterey), and the service was impeccable. Oh, and free mugicha (barley tea) may not mean much to most people, but it just completed my experience of feeling like I was right back on Kyushu. This place is an absolute gem and I wish I didn't live 20 miles away! I'll still be back though, and often. P.S. For you nigiri fans, they sell by the piece - not orders of two like everyone else, so you can try a bigger variety...
Read moreAs a vegetarian, it's not always easy to find authentic Japanese food with a bit of variety (no thank you to cucumber rolls!), but here they were very helpful and accommodating. They advised us and provided things off menu, such as veggie gyoza and tempura, even making a special tempura broth for us! Everything was fresh and delicious. They are able to cater for vegans and allergies too, not that I needed it. This isn't a fine dining atomsphere - you order at the counter and it shuts early, but both the food and the sake were excellent and good value. Many of the customers were clearly locals, most of whom came for take out, so you may find you have to wait a little while for your food if it's busy, but that's to be expected for a small kitchen in which everything is freshly prepared. Sadly this was my last night in Monterey - I wish I'd discovered this...
