UPDATE TO REVIEW: Hotel management reached out to me to make right what went wrong. For that I am grateful. Hotel is located close to all the attractions we were in Monterey for, which was nice. It was obvious from arrival that the hotel is very old, so that lowered my expectations, but I was still greatly disappointed with my stay. Let’s start with the room. We got the 2-room suite, which was 2 very small rooms and a bathroom. One of the rooms had not a/c or heater installed and the hotel’s fix for this was a space heater. The bathroom in the photos on the site showed a full tub/shower but what we arrived to was a tiny shower we could barely fit into. The beds were described as “pillow top” mattresses. There was no pillow top’ the bed was hard, and I could feel the springs. Speaking of the bed, the metal pedestal it sat on would make a popping sound every time we sat down. On to the door. We quickly discovered the deadbolt did not work (it kept hitting the strike plate). Front desk came and looked at it and said basically we didn’t need it because we had the secondary bolt lock at the top. Fine, except that Siri g our stay that bolt broke. When I reported it, I was told that I really didn’t need the extra locks because the hotel was safe and had 24 hour cameras. She said she would call to have it fixed, but no one ever showed up. When we arrived, we had DirecTV service in our rooms. During our stay that was switched to Dish, which had maybe a third of the channels and no “premium” channels as described on website. Not only that, but one of the TVs was not “compatible” with the new system and so it only got local channels for the remainder of our stay. Probably the worst part of the switch was that the workers installing the new system were let into our room when we were gone - WITHOUT our knowledge or permission. If you do stay here, understand the walls are thin and you can here everything that goes on in other rooms and outside. Also, the parking lot is tiny and if there are full sized trucks parked in the lot, it is difficult to navigate through. Breakfast was pretty standard. The waffles were some of the better tasting waffles I’ve had at the many Best Westerns we’ve stayed at. The bacon was a little rubbery, but expected because it sat in a hot plate. The rest of the selection was also pretty standard - fruit, juice, eggs, pastries, cereal. Overall, I would not recommend staying here.

Awful! Avoid! The staff have been the rudest I’ve experienced during our stay over the last 2 weeks in California. Originally we tried to extend our stay and she was not at all helpful in that. We are now trying to leave after one night due to our experience and they are not at all helpful in refunding our second night. We have hardly slept due to the guests above moving things, dropping things and loudly thudding around above throughout the night. It’s a non smoking hotel so instead the large group of men that have booked all the rooms above my family are congregating on the balcony and stairwell above, smoking cigarettes and cigars and loudly talking, shouting to each other regardless of the fact it’s 4am 5am…when we arrived our children wanted to use the pool and we had to sit and watch them as this same large group of men were using the pool seating for their social area whilst swearing and smoking cigars. We cannot stay another night here with our children. We haven’t slept and we don’t feel safe. I went to reception early this morning but they were closed until 7am I followed their instructions and called the number provided to tell them of our experience and the number just rung out. When they were open we went again to log our complaint and ask to leave, they said because we didn’t inform them they won’t refund our £500 cost for another night (2 rooms) I showed her proof that I’d called their number and she said well you should have rung the bell (this wasn’t the instruction on the sign they put on their door) they’ve offered to move us upstairs next to the men instead of above but obviously that will still be noisy and the pool with still feel unsafe.

I have to say the rooms here are nice and pretty spacious. Not to mention clean and inviting. Easy to make yourself at home if needed. However one thing I'd have to say I didn't like is that fact that any little noise your upstairs neighbors make, you're going to hear it. All of it. Even their voices. Which kind of makes me worry safety wise as well. Like just how thin are these walls. If there's one thing I like, it's my sleep after a long drive. Definitely not something you wanna be hearing when trying to sleep. The video contains what my phone was picking up from the noise. Pretty loud.

We typically stay at BW hotels because we’ve had generally great experiences, but this one was quite disappointing.

It started off by receiving some sort of notice that we were already checked in, when we were still 24-hours before our trip…? The text said to reply with any questions, so I asked if we could be accommodated with a top-level room - no response. I received another text the day of, and asked the same question, and didn’t receive a response.

When we arrived, Sterling made it sound like it was inconvenient to change rooms, so I let him know it was fine and we took the bottom-level room. Typically I won’t be “checked in” until I arrive, so I found it odd that I had already dry been assigned a room and that it seemed inconvenient to change. Besides that moment, Sterling’s customer service was top-tier, he was friendly, kind, and made sure everything else we needed was taken care of.

Sadly, the room itself was subpar. There were large cracks in the door, which let in a lot of air and noise, the beds were uncomfortable, a handle was unscrewed and came off the dresser drawer, the bathroom window had so much condensation every morning, and the barriers between the upper/lower rooms were razor thin. You can only control what you can control, but I still don’t understand how people with kids don’t respect their surroundings and don’t allow their families to jump/run around, especially until 11-12am at night. The noise is nothing the hotel can control, but we were also right next to the room that handles the towels/cleaning, so trying to nap at Noon, when the cleaning staff (very friendly, welcoming) was doing their job and completing laundry tasks for the day.

Esmeralda (staff), was also incredibly sweet and accommodating, and even another patron at the pool commented on how wonderful she was.

The location was great - it was around the corner from Dennis the Menace Park, the wharf and the aquarium.

It’s a shame because the staff was the best part of the trip (minus the original awkward request), but the hotel isn’t one we’ll...
