Wow, now this is how you build out an Hmart, the most impressive I've seen in awhile. I was surprised how fresh and wonderful their produce and fruits were, at their solid and cleanly packaged meats, and at how much stuff they managed to cram in here without being suffocating - perhaps in thanks to the good lighting, colorful signs, and good layout. There are much bigger and well-known supermarkets with sadder looking "fresh" items laying around.
They have several good banchan/side dish/ready-to-eat sections, some by the kimchi section and others by the k-chicken kitchen. The bakery is looking good and there are seemingly long stretches of easy-to-prepare refrigerated, frozen, and ready-to-eat packaged foods and hand-made dishes. If only I had a larger fridge instead of a small one in my humble studio kitchenette! Only sad thing is that Hmarts in Manhattan still doesn't participate in their rewards/loyalty program. Get with the program, guys!
This place has a lot of promise and is absolutely miles better than the old one in Koreatown. If Hmart as a brand gets better at marketing with authenticity (instead of having that cold and clinical, Asian-corporation vibe), connects with locals instead of just major Asian-American celebrities and brands, and improve their customer service and return policy to match those of powerhouses nearby, I truly believe this niche supermarket can...
Read moreYesterday around 6:31pm, I went in HMart looking to find a whisk for matcha. As an establishment that I always shopped at, I was truly in disbelief on what happened to me! I walked in causally and went to the Korean fried chicken hot stand, contemplating if I wanted to buy it. After, I walked straight into the âHousewareâ aisle, looking for the matcha whisk that I was hoping to find. As Iâm walking to the aisle looking at where the bowls & set for the matcha was at, I was wrongfully discriminated by the BLACK MALE security guard. He slowly walks up to me and looks directly into my bag, my initial reaction was âwhy you are you walking up to me!?â Basically already accusing / making assumptions I done put something in my teso life bag. It started to get heated in the conversation on his behalf while trying to make himself the victim, as to me who was the actual victim. That man did not walk up to anybody else that was near him nor passing by him in between those aisle. He also threaten to take/show me to the police when I have done nothing wrong. I am a Afro-Latina, and this will not & should not fly by ever happen again!!! I didnât even get a proper apology from him nor from the manager that he ran back to! This utterly disgusting behavior and yall just lost a...
Read moreThis H Mart, like most ethnic grocery stores in NYC, is too small. This leads to a suboptimal shopping experience. For example, the aisles are too narrow to wheel a cart, and you can't pause in the aisle to discuss your potential choices without inconveniencing your fellow shoppers. However, the staff is efficient and helpful. They are always willing to assist you in finding what you need.
If you are used to small NYC grocery stores, you will know what to expect. But if you've been to H Mart elsewhere, this one is small.
The produce section is small, but they do have the usual suspects like bok choy and sprouts. The meat and frozen food sections are also small.
The strength of this store are the snacks and packaged goods. They have a wide variety of Asian snacks and packaged goods, which are hard to find in other stores.
Overall, this is a small but efficient H Mart. It's a good place to go if you're looking for Asian snacks and packaged goods. But if you're looking for a large grocery store with a wide variety of produce, meat, and frozen food, you'll need to...
