1 Star â NOT DESERVING OF ANY STARSâŚ. Uninhabitable, Unhealthy, and Unsafe: A Complete Health Hazard We were transferred to the Ramada by Wyndham North Bergen, NJ after another nearby Ramada location overbooked by 13 rooms. I am currently undergoing cancer treatment in New York City, and until our apartment becomes available, we have been staying in hotels. With no viable option, we agreed to be moved to this property a decision we now deeply regret. Upon arrival, we discovered that the hotel was under active construction, which we were not informed of in advance. We were assigned a room on the 10th floor. It appeared to be only partially renovated (about 75% complete) - missing baseboards, exposed fixtures - but most concerning was the complete lack of hot water. We ran the water for over 30 minutes as instructed by the front desk, but it remained ice cold. Only after a manager visited the room did we learn that the entire 10th floor had no hot water. So why were we placed there to begin with? We were then moved to the 11th floor.
While there was finally hot water, the television did not function - though given the circumstances, we prioritized hot water. The following morning, we were informed that the 10th and 11th floors needed to be evacuated due to safety concerns from ongoing construction. We were moved again, this time to the 5th floor â and that's where things took an alarming turn. The room on the 5th floor was completely unacceptable. It resembled something from a 1960s roadside motel stained sheets, no comforter, a single thin blanket, peeling wallpaper, mold throughout the bathroom, exposed wiring, holes in the walls (some patched but not sanded or painted), a fire-damaged microwave, and a leaking ceiling with a bucket catching water. The towels were dirty and thin. The room was not only unsanitary but actively hazardous.
But the worst was yet to come. We were visited by rats. Not one, but three, that we visibly saw â one ran under the door, another along the wall, and a third down the drapes. I screamed in terror. I immediately reported the issue to Ramada Corporate, filed a complaint with the New Jersey Department of Health and Food Protection, and with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. I also addressed this with the hotel's GM and front desk.
Shockingly, the front desk employee admitted that the rat infestation has been an issue for six months. He even offered a "tip" â to stuff towels in the holes under the TV and behind the nightstand, as he does when staying in the building. We requested rodent spray or peppermint oil - anything to protect our belongings while we gathered them to leave - and were instead given Shout laundry stain remover. When we suggested purchasing mint-based deterrents from Target (2 miles away), we were told it wasn't in stock. I went myself and found it immediately - within 10 minutes. When I returned to show the manager, I was met with silence. No apology. No concern. When we used the spray, more rats began coming out of the air vents. This was horrifying and traumatic.
To summarize: We were misled and placed in rooms without hot water. We were moved multiple times due to unsafe conditions. We were ultimately placed in a room that was unsanitary, outdated, and infested with rats. Despite promises, we never received a credit or refund - and my credit card continues to be charged. The property is under major construction, with elevator outages, prolonged water shut-offs, and no transparency to guests. We were exposed to conditions that are not only unacceptable but dangerous to human health, especially someone who is immunocompromised like myself.
This property should not be operating in its current state. I urge anyone considering staying here - especially families, individuals with health conditions, or anyone expecting even basic safety and hygiene - to look elsewhere. We are pursuing further action with local health authorities and Ramada/Wyndham Corporate. Shame on Ramada for allowing this property to...
Read moreQuick check-in, friendly staff. Itâs under construction, so lots of unfinished areas, bad painting, tile work that doesnât lineup. We waited to get up to the seventh floor and when we finally got to our room, our keys didnât work. So we tried figuring it out assuming that we were doing something wrong but then had to go back downstairs, the manager came up open the door and our Keys got reprogrammed or dialed in, who knows. Later that evening, the keys stopped working again, and I had to get mine redone
Our showerhead when we moved it would wobble back-and-forth so who knows when thatâs gonna be an issue. There was about a pinkies thickness of caulk around the bathroom sink, which didnât really look too classy for the price we paid.
New tiles in the bathroom, but same 20+ year-old hairdryer that doesnât function. Bath tub had been painted and is showing the previous black paint that it was painted underneath. Our remote to the TV function for volume and channel and turning it on, all other features like sleep or captions were unavailable.
Construction material everywhere in the parking lot only two out of the four elevators work which means itâs about a 10 minute wait to go up or down the elevator. Again, the staff was very friendly.
Breakfast was very mediocre, the cheap powdered eggs would probably be the star of the show, that was the only thing that I knew where it came from. Everything else was just frozen stuff that had the thought and then baked or we had to microwave ourselves. The coffee was watery and occasionally had grounds in it. There wasnât adequate seating for breakfast.
The crowning jewel was listening to a smoke alarm beep all through our stay down the hall from us. I pointed it out to the front desk and they told me itâs probably the batteries and that I could probably change it. For the price we paid we shouldnât have Had to deal with a lot of of this.
I donât think weâll be staying at a Ramada Again, anytime soon. My wife also Wanted me to mention that the blankets were too thin and we had to get an additional one for bed, there was only a single mirror in the bathroom, which is tough for getting ready, and of course, the dryer just being a symbolic piece of hairstyling tools left adorned to the wall. Also, gym underwear...
Read moreWe were sceptical due to the bad reviews, but we ended up pleasantly surprised by the amenities and the free breakfast. I traveled with three friends, we stayed here for 6 nights and we wanted to be close to NY but we wanted to avoid the crazy fees that you have to pay to stay in Manhattan. We didn't know about the free breakfast, so it was a nice surprise since we could save money and time in the morning, they had eggs, bread, cereal, yogurt, coffee, milk, juices and fruit and there is room to sit. The beds were comfortable, the rooms had AC, the towels were changed daily, the room was tidy. The TV worked and had cable, but we couldn't figure out the connection to internet. We stayed in two rooms and the beds were queen size so we had space and could sleep comfortably, but all four of us could've easily stayed in only one room. The bathroom has hot water and it has all that you need after a long day of walking around. We took the private shuttle to NYC which cost $10 each and left us in Times Square and also picked us up at 8, 9 or 10pm, but we also noticed you could get the bus for $3.50 and it takes you to port authority in Times Square. The private shuttle is just a 10-15min drive so it's perfect if you're going on vacation and want to visit NYC. We also went shopping to some malls in Elizabeth (taxes are lower than in NY, if you're a tourist try to avoid any big purchases in NY unless strictly necessary, NJ is way cheaper) and the Uber was $30 each way. There was clearly some ongoing construction in the hall but we never heard any noise and there was a faint smell of paint in the hallway but it didn't bother us, it didn't get to the room. We had a nice view of the city and we also had free parking when we rented a car to do a road trip to another city. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, we walked a LOT during this trip and this hotel was just what we needed to get to know NYC and get restful nights of sleep. We would definitely stay again, if you're traveling with a small group, this is a great choice for a...
