I live in the area and driven by this Super 8 hundreds of times. So when I just needed a brief one-night stay I thought of this place right away — and am I glad I chose to stay here!
First, I’ll give the negatives (these negatives tho aren’t really anything that would make me not want to come here again ~ just pointing out minor things I noticed):
lighting is not too bright in the room, but 2 outlets on the base of every lamp is very convenient; bathroom towels are very small and of low quality, but they do give you many to use; bathroom soaps & shampoos are very small, barely enough for even one person, but they will bring you more if requested; although room is very nice, overall it is definitely too small for more than 2ppl. I stayed here alone and it was just right for me alone, so anyone coming w/a family might want to ask for a bigger room or get 2 rooms.
Now on to the positives! very clean room (no weird smells, etc); noise quality was excellent. For staying on a busy weekend day in June with tons of tourist activity, I barely heard anyone in other rooms around me - and my stay was on a Saturday night; bed was very very comfortable, and it had 4 pillows; in-room microwave & fridge was very convenient; newer wall-mounted flatscreen tv has over 1200 channels (xtra charge for most premium channels, but they do have a good selection of free major network channels); the heater/air conditioner works great; bathroom is nicely appointed and love the arching shower curtain so it doesn’t stick to you while showering; bathroom shower water has a strong flow and stayed hot for as long as I needed; front desk staff was very efficient and accommodating at check-in. I came in at their busiest time, around 4pm, but didn’t wait long and the entire check-in process wasn’t longer than 5-7 mins. I had an issue with getting to my room on the second floor and with parking and they immediately switched rooms for me to a first floor and different area for parking; cleaning staff was just as friendly. Always smiling and great job cleaning rooms; in-room dining options is a big plus, and can be done on your smartphone by scanning a QR code, and breakfast is free from 6-9am; in-room free Wi-Fi was fast & great; very fair room rates, especially if booked via 3rd party sites. They honor all prices; many nearby shopping & restaurant options, such as IHOP, Pizza Hut, ShopRite, Old Navy, Shoppers World, Crunch Fitness Gym & many other establishments.
Overall, you can not go wrong staying here. I recently stayed at the Wyndham up the road from here. Cost was almost twice as much and was not nearly as nice a stay.
(And by the way, as someone who lives in the area, it is NOT sketchy or dangerous as some have said in the comments of other reviews. It’s near a highway, the highway that takes transportation right into the Lincoln Tunnel to NYC. And there’s a Starbucks around the corner from this Super 8 - and we all know Starbucks does not open businesses in any dangerous areas. So don’t worry - you won’t get mugged or car...
Read moreThe best feature of this hotel is the location. There is a shuttle that picks you up right in front of the hotel and takes you to NYC. Do not expect much on the room. It is nothing fancy but is decent if you are a tourist that is out and about the whole day and will just go back to the hotel to sleep. The breakfast is pretty simple; bagels, cream cheese, juice and coffee in a styro cup. There is no dining area for breakfast so you basically grab it and eat it in your room. The housekeeping staff are GREAT! Even though a lot of them do not speak english; they try their best to communicate to ensure your stay is enjoyable and provide you what you need. The front desk staff though is a different story. There was a rude bearded guy that have no customer service skills whatsoever! He should work elsewhere. He was so arrogant! We have expressed that we do no need housekeeping service for the duration of our stay. My husband used to do housekeeping and we were more comfortable to just get fresh towels and linens and he was fine making the bed himself. We do this all the time when we stay at hotels to lessen the load on the housekeeping staff as we know how tiring the job is. This guy calls our room and says “Can you come to the front desk?” No please or no explanation why we needed to come. The guy said housekeeping was mandatory and threatens my husband that we can checkout if we do not comply. This could have been said or explained in a better/nicer way than threatening to kick us out of a room that was already paid for. He asked that we do not put our DND sign. My husband has already done the beds at this point because the spanish speaking housekeeper was nice enough to provide us the sheets. All our garbage was still in the room though but we put them all in a garbage bag for easy grabbing and collected our recycling and left them all in a corner. When we got back to the hotel. No one took the garbage or recycling. It was obvious that no one came in. Which was fine! But don’t say it’s mandatory and start threatening when no one will come anyway. The next day, we were chatting nicely with the spanish speaking housekeeper and just told her we really just needed towels. The same guy arrives and started shouting at my husband and reiterating again that cleaning was mandatory or we can check out. This time I spoke with him and told him how back he is at his job and customer service is not his forte at all. I told him not to tell us it is mandatory when no one will come. He said he will scold the housekeeping staff because they did not come. I told him the housekeeping staff are fantastic and we don’t care if they don’t come. I told him it is YOU that I have a problem with because he should be nicer to the customers and stop threatening us. All in all we had a great time at the hotel but that guy needs some serious customer...
Read moreI will not stay in that hotel again, although is was not a terrible experience:
Positive
The staff is nice and courteous, The rooms are in very good shape, and the bathrooms are upgraded nicely. The beds and pillows were also very comfortable, however
Negative
The hotel is old and the second building has steep stairs and no elevator. Additionally is not located in a nice area.
We selected this place for
the breakfast, and The shuttle to and from NYC (advertised as shuttle to local attractions).
But were very disappointed by both.
In every super 8 I have ever stayed they offered a good breakfast: waffles, bagels, jams and jellies, butter, milk (hot and cold) fruit (apples, bananas and/or oranges) coffee, teas. So when we booked, I thought we'll it's a bit expensive but it will be worth it with the breakfast and shuttle.
Unfortunately, their breakfast, which they call "on the run", is a brown bag with a small water, 1 granola bar, 1 tangerine and 1 plain bagel with 1 little cream cheese container. So that was VERY disappointing and not at all filing to carry you thru a day of walking in NYC.
To get your "breakfast" you have to go to the front desk on the main building and ask for your brown bag. You could consume your bagel on the little area across the front desk (standing room only) or to go to the little breakfast area on the second building, which at least had stools. Either one very busy cos everyone is trying to warm their bagel up and try to get coffee/ juice.
And the shuttle, we'll, I was under the impression the shuttle was a hotel shuttle, but I was wrong. There's a small fee, between $3-$4, depending on the driver for each way that has to be paid in cash. At the front desk, they provide a paper with some details about the shuttle: where it would drop you off and where to take it to go back to the hotel, it also the bus lines one can take to go back.
The paper also indicated the shuttle ran from 6am until 10pm (corrected from 12am manually by the person at the front desk), however, in the way back, the shuttle doesn't bring you back to the hotel, but they drop you off on a stop about 10 minutes away from the hotel (the area doesn't look like a good place to be walking at night).
And on the second day (Saturday), when we went to take the shuttle back to the hotel, we were not able to get to the gate; the door to the hallway you need to take to get to the gate was locked. After having to go to information, we were told that if locked no more busses were delaying from that gate; it was around 9:05pm.
Bottom line, the hotel while ok, was not worth the amount of money we had...
