Avast, Ye Hearties! A Glowing Review of Blackbeard's Lodge on Ocracoke Island
Ahoy, fellow travelers of the high seas and landlubbers alike! Gather 'round as I spin ye a yarn about a true treasure found on the storied shores of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. This be no ordinary port of call, but the venerable Blackbeard's Lodge, a grand establishment that has weathered many a storm since its birth in the 1930s!
With only 800 souls callin' this island home, it's a place where legends come alive. Blackbeard's Lodge stands proud as a testament to resilience, havin' survived tempests and hurricanes, most notably the fearsome Hurricane Hazel. This mighty storm bent the walls of the lodge outward, but the brave Navy lads rigged a system of cables to pull 'em back into place, securing the lodge for future generations of weary travelers. To this day, these very cables keep the lodge steadfast and true.
Upon me arrival, I was welcomed by two fine lasses who run the place with the charm and warmth of seasoned innkeepers. The lobby was clean, spacious, and adorned with nautical treasures, makin' me feel like a true pirate at home. Parkin' was ample and convenient, and I was delighted to discover that me room had a separate door on the back corner, providin' easy comings and goings.
As a seafarer who values cleanliness, I was mightily impressed by the spotless condition of me quarters. Armed with me trusty black light, I scoured every inch and found nary a spot aglow. It's been over two years since I've found accommodations as pristine as these! The next day, I praised the cleanliness to the innkeepers
and learned that they adhere to a strict steam cleaning schedule. For those who travel with their four-legged first mates, the pet-friendly rooms are steam cleaned between each guest, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness.
The room itself was well-appointed with convenient amenities such as a small refrigerator and a coffee maker (though ye must bring yer own coffee, so BYOC!). The toiletries provided were simple but sufficient. While the walls may not be thick, the corner room I stayed in had two walls facing the outside, granting a bit more peace and privacy.
Climate control was handled by a space heater in the colder months and a window air conditioning unit during the warmer times. Both worked admirably, keeping the room at a comfortable temperature no matter the season.
The lodge boasts a game room just off the lobby, filled with pool tables and other diversions. The walls are adorned with historical photographs and artifacts, including impressive pieces of shipwrecks that add a touch of maritime history to the ambiance.
The innkeepers were not only charming but also knowledgeable, offering excellent recommendations for dining and activities on the island. Their hospitality made my stay even more enjoyable, and I look forward to returning with my dogs for future visits.
In conclusion, Blackbeard's Lodge on Ocracoke Island is a true gem, offering clean, comfortable accommodations with a rich history and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether ye be a pirate at heart or a landlubber seeking a unique getaway, I highly recommend setting anchor at this fine...
Read moreWe have had two experiences staying at Blackbeard’s Lodge and two totally different results. Last year was a good enough experience to come back this year, obviously. This year? We won’t be back.
When we made our hotel reservation, we also reserved a golf cart which we thought would be very convenient. We could have reserved with any number of other outlets, but we chose Blackbeard’s for convenience. However, when we arrived it had been raining, as it often does in Ocracoke and there were puddles.
When we checked in, we had to wait for several minutes for the clerk to arrive. We tried calling the number left at the front desk, but it went to voice mail. Finally after several minutes the clerk arrives, makes no apology for being absent and starts the check in process. We asked to confirm the reservation for a golf cart and the clerk responds with, - rudely - “that isn’t happening”. No apology, nothing. We asked about the possibility that we could could rent one tomorrow and were given an indifferent response that if maybe the puddles ran off we might be able to.
The following day we asked again and the same clerk pointed outside and shook her head. So, we walked up the street to Wheelies, where they gladly rented us a cart. A few hours later, we parked the cart where a different Blackbeard clerk was showing a woman how to use the golf cart they just rented to her! Obviously, they had a problem renting a cart to us, but not someone else.
Of course, the room had its issues too. Once it got dark, we noticed a significant amount of light coming into the bathroom from the corner and from every piece of plumbing (pics included). I looked for a camera and didn’t see anything, but clearly there was something unusual going on with that bathroom.
Also, the stopper in the tub doesn't work, so forget using the whirlpool bath - however, when trying to turn the shower on, no matter what temperature you have it set for, it comes out 100% cold from the shower head and no amount of waiting or adjusting changes it. Absolutely useless.
Rude and unfair treatment, substandard room - no, we will never be back and we recommend you look...
Read moreOur visit was supposed to be a few hours. My relative became ill and we had to find a place to stay overnight. We paid $208 overnight for this place. I’m assuming that maybe I don’t understand “shabby chic”. Maybe all the lodging on the island is like this. We booked while on the ferry, comparing reviews as quickly as possible. On the way, we passed better looking places on the outside. The covered and secluded entrance wasn’t clearly marked for where to find the office. The clerk was nice and moved our room to the lower level so that my cousin wouldn’t have to walk too far. She got off duty at 8pm and no one would be on sight again until 8am. We arrived @7:30pm.|The room was clean. That’s it. It was Clean which is a minimum expectation. We were originally given a single bed. The clerk said that is what I paid for. Thankfully I took a screenshot of my booking for her to see that it should be double. Once inside, there were two small beds in a tiny space. Sink in the same room as the beds. From 7:45-8:00pm- (15 minutes), I played beat the clock, racing to the front desk to get everything that was not in the room. There was NO bath soap bars left for us at all. Only shampoo and conditioner. Had to run to get it. We had no luggage on this emergency stay. All of our things were at another hotel on the mainland. Then, there were no blankets. Ran again to get them before 8pm. We had to do all of our sink-related business without privacy. The room was freezing. 2 window/wall A.C. units. We searched and searched for the heat and finally realized there was a small space heater tucked in the corner. WTW?? We pulled that out and plugged it in, The only plus to this experience was that the bed was comfortable. It will serve the purpose of rest until we leave at 6am to hopefully catch the ferry back . I am requesting a refund of at least 50%. This is price gouging at its best. We were afraid of the $119 room down the way, but should have taken a chance on it. Thanks for your attention to...
