This week I had a family emergency and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Orange City, FL. I was So pleased with the property, the staff and especially the manager.
Upon a late arrival and exhausted, I was pleasantly greeted at check in.
The exterior of the hotel was nicely landscaped and the interior of the public areas and the lobby were beautifully appointed, clean and fresh. There were cookies on hand and a good variety of snacks and refrigerated drinks available. To my surprise, a cooler behind the front desk had wine and beer for purchase at a very reasonable cost. What a treat for a weary traveler!
The room, again, was well appointed, comfortable, spotless and quiet with ice and soda machine by the elevator. (What a concept, not to put them by a guest room.) A refrigerator and microwave in the room too. If I traveled for business, as I used to, I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
And breakfast...so many offerings, hot and cold, fruit, etc. and 2 pleasant ladies re-suppling the area. The area was warm and inviting and spotless. Even a TV and fireplace and USA today on hand. On my second morning, I talked with the breakfast staff after watching them interacting with the guests. They said they loved working there because they felt valued. As I was getting coffee, a young man approached and talked with one of the breakfast staff. I asked him if he was the manager, which he confirmed. I told him how much I was enjoying my stay and how he must be a great manager to have his staff feel so appreciated. We talked for awhile about our mutual Florida connections...had the same alma mater for one, and he was so cordial and friendly. As I ate a scrumptious cinnamon bun,I watched as he went table to table greeting guests and asking about their stay. It was obvious some were happy repeat customers who he knew by name.
I chose this hotel by location, reviews, and price, in that order. It far exceeded my expectations and I realize the reviews were very accurate. Maybe ALL HI Express properties have the same amenities, but I double they have the happy staff and incredible manager.
So when I return to the area, you know where I will stay. But HI express will also be my first choice in any city I visit...

Read moreAfter two nights of no power due to our most recent hurricane, I searched locally to see if there was any reasonably-priced hotel availability. This Holiday Inn is about a 40-minute drive, so I grabbed a room for Saturday night. ||As a very experienced hotel denizen, I knew enough to request a quiet room on a high floor, away from elevator noise and traffic noise. Fortunately we ended up on the 5th floor, where there wasn't much guest traffic, because the room wasn't noise-proof. We did hear occasional conversation in the hall when guests passed our door. Fortunately, none were late night partiers, so sleep wasn't disturbed.||The hotel property is lovely. The building appears to have been recently renovated throughout, and well-planned to include thoughtful amenities like night lights and exhaust fans in the bathroom (the lack thereof are my pet peeves in hotels). Our king room was large and comfortably furnished with necessities like blackout blinds, Keurig coffee maker, microwave and mini-refridge. The chaise lounge was a nice touch, and I appreciated the exceptionally comfortable desk chair.||I also appreciated the full-size tub . . . soaking in a hot bath was divine after not having that option at home for days. This hotel goes above and beyond most brands in bathroom amenities. In addition to body wash, shampoo and conditioner, guests are provided mouthwash, a shower cap, and makeup remover towelettes. If you forget your toothbrush or toothpaste, shaver, etc, you can get a complimentary one at the front desk. ||The location is perfect, literally 30 seconds off the interstate. And you can walk to Perkins Pancake House if you're into franchise cuisine. Many other restaurants are within a few minutes driving distance.||Hotel breakfast is served from 6:30-9:30. We didn't partake because complimentary breakfasts don't typically offer organic options.||Holiday Inn Express was a welcome refuge from the storm. We could have stayed indefinitely if power hadn't been restored at home. Add noise insulation under the door and a recycle bin, and the guest experience here is...
