Read moreUnion is located inside a hotel so it definitely has a classy feel to it while maintaining an atmosphere that promotes comfort and leisure. Our waiter was friendly and he checked in on us multiple times to make sure everything was to our liking. Union has everything that a good brunch place should have.
Now, let’s talk about the service here that ultimately ruined our entire experience, why we will never visit again, and compelled me to write my first restaurant review.
To give some context, my fiancé and I are both Asian Americans and always have been mindful of subtle discrimination during our travels.
We had arrived at Union for brunch and asked the hostess to check us in. The place was mostly empty except for 2 couples who were already dining. Our hostess led us to a secluded area away from the main dining area with very little lighting. It was objectively the worst place to sit in the restaurant and we would not have asked to be reseated except the place was mostly empty. When I asked our hostess if we could get a seat by the window. She reluctantly reseated us by one of the window tables. The worst part was that even by the time we finished our meal the restaurant was almost at full capacity but the table that the hostess first gave us was still empty. It begged us to wonder why we were seated there first if she did not offer the same seat to other parties.
It is so unfortunate that an action by a single individual—in this case a hostess at a restaurant—could offset our entire experience and unequivocally ruin a meal that took an entire team of professionals at Union. I am writing this review to complain, but also to share my experience and to make sure that that this type of behavior does not go unnoticed. It is a fine place for guests to dine, and I hope that the standard at each stage of the customer’s dining experience, from the first greet to the moment they step out, is met with the same consistent...
Read moreHad New Year’s Eve reservations. We had 8 o’clock reservations and were not seated till 840. Gave them a pass because of New Year’s Eve and people dallying. Would have been fine but while waiting for table ordered drink in bar. In a freak accident the I hit the glass and it broke cutting my finger. Ok , it’s an accident. Then I was informed there was an incident report. It was the main focus of the manager. Not concern, but an incident report. The bartender was more concerned! Finally we get seated. Our waiter was ill equipped to be a fine dining wait person. He did not know the menus well enough to answer questions on the dishes. Fair enough , finding help and training is tough these days. After all we were out for a nice New Year’s Eve dinner with friends who suggested Union having eaten there before. They too were very unimpressed this occasion. The food was good- not great. - there are far better restaurants in Portland for quality of food. The final straw came when the waiter brought the menu back for a dessert course. When he put the menus down he put a blue card with what I thought were dessert specials- yes there was a dessert special, also the other New Year’s Eve specials for appetizers and dinner. HE NEVER GAVE US THE DINNER SPECIAL LIST UNTIL DESSERT! His comment “ it was supposed to be inserted in the menu” obviously he knew it wasn’t there because he handed it to us for dessert. Not one of us had the insert. I don’t mind paying hood prices for fine dining. However, the experience must be complete. There were missed opportunities by staff and management. So many that I would be hard pressed to go back. The two manhattans and the one glass of wine for the pre dinner fiasco came to $71 dollars only three of us had libations. I would not recommend based on my experience. Too many outstanding restaurants in Portland to endure an evening...
