Not a great experience. My wife and I have been vacationing in Portland for the past few days. We've been checking out many of the local shops, as we do in any new place visit. Yesterday, I visited Joseph's, a men's clothing store, over on Fore Street. They were extremely helpful, and I ended up purchasing several tailored outfits. My wife was looking forward to finding a women's clothing store which could provide the same level of quality and service. We found Jill McGowan's today. Unfortunately, it was an awful experience.
From the moment my wife and I walked in, it was clear we were not welcome. There were two associates working at the time. One behind the counter greeted us as she cashed out the only other customer in the store. But, you could tell it was half-hearted. It was almost like she was disappointed we walked in. The other kept side-eyeing my wife and I like we were going to steal something. She never spoke to us or asked if we needed help. After a few minutes, we decided to leave. If you're looking for a great customer experience in a welcoming environment, this is not the...
Read moreI just had a life altering shopping experience at Jill McGowan’s store. I am not someone who enjoys clothes shopping-at all. Primarily because I find most off the rack clothing of poor quality and ill fitting. So when I do find something I like, I tend to buy multiples and/or one in every color so I can put off shopping again for a while. I have always loved Jill’s shirts but assumed they were not made for larger body types- I was wrong! I went into her store on Exchange Street for a personal shopping experience and Jill and Jayme knew exactly which styles and in what fabrics would work best for me. They even took into account my skin tone and eye color. I never once touched a clothes rack. They grabbed what they thought I should try on and within 45 minutes I had purchased a seasons worth of the most beautiful, well made and timeless pieces of clothing I have ever owned - AND THEY FIT WELL! What a revelation- I will never shop any other way again. Thank you Jill and Jayme for taking the time to pay attention to the customer- I will be back for another personal shopping...

Walked in ready to spend, as I like to support Portland and am fortunate to have means. “Greeted” by a tall woman in glasses (owner?) who looked me up and down as if critiquing my wardrobe. Almost turned and left but a shirt caught my eye. It was ordinary but the material felt of quality. I went home to Boston, ordered a different shirt online and after I was charged, never so much as received a “processing” email. Only notified that the company had not shipped the item. Just canceled it. Terrible customer service. While $225 isn’t all that pricey, I expected a more pleasant experience. I’ll never go back.
As Maya said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the...
