When I saw the historic status, location, pillows, and soaps prominently advertised on their promotional materials, I figured it was all hype for an adequate hotel. Instead, every small detail made our stay that much more charming and memorable. Also three cheers for Michelle Raye, the inn manager, who was happy to take my many calls about public beaches (Wallis Sands), light houses (Nubble just fifteen minutes north), whether parking was available (there's two in the front and a whole gravel lot to the side), requesting late check out (which was granted), and asking whether we could store our bags or leave the car in the lot after checkout while we went into town for lunch (no room for bags, but perfectly fine to leave the vehicle so we didn't need to repark it someplace).
And you know? The pillows were noticeably soft and the soaps undeniably pleasant. The historic building was narrow in places, all corners and nooks, but with plenty of amenities like ultra quiet air conditioning and dazzlingly clean, modern showers, it feels more glamorous, despite its age, than the homogeny of than corporate hotels. The little details in each room and in the communal spaces like maps and, paintings, and boat parts make it quirky.
Without a minifridge or coffee maker in the room, the complementary snack bar of ice bags, filtered water, cheese doodles, and keurig was very choice. And yeah, you can't beat the location. Steps away from the Prescott Park rose gardens and the hustle and bustle of downtown with its many restaurants, bars, and breweries. All the brewery and restaurant selections provided by the hotel were also super on point, having sampled more than a few during our short stay. Sailmaker's is worth the extra $50-$70 more than Holiday Inn, and I would definitely recommend staying here and will definitely...
Read moreWe had a great time at the Sailmaker's house. We stayed in Room 8, the King Suite. It was plenty large with a very spacious living area in front of the bedroom, ample windows, and a deck overlooking the gardens of the John Langdon house. We received plenty of text message communications from the inn up to our arrival, explaining parking, timing, and how to get in. The manager was there when we arrived and she was very friendly. ||There's a nice sitting area at the entry, as well as a shared living area if you'd like to hang out with other guests. There is a refrigerator in that space as well if your room doesn't have one. We had our own fridge, so we didn't use the shared one. There is a good selection of k-cup coffees along with sugar, stevia, sucralose, milk, cream, almond milk (both sweetened and unsweetened), and oat milk. There are snacks as well, including oatmeal cups, belvita bars, granola bars, popcorn, and fruit snacks. They even have a cold water dispenser and ice. ||We stayed for two days and it was great. Our room was clean, the staff was friendly, and it's the perfect location just minutes from Portsmouth down town. Linens were comfortable, bathroom was spacious, and everything went well. I'd certainly stay...
Read moreWe are in love with this place! Beautiful combination of old and new. The rooms are comfortable and beautifully decorated, the house is quaint and updated nicely. It's literally in the middle of downtown Portsmouth, you are walking distance to everything from the historic section and cemeteries to the bars and restaurants. The keyless entry makes you feel like you're walking into your own house. The garden is lovely and just private enough to sit and enjoy the bustle of downtown yet still be in your own quiet area. The beds are super comfy, the bathrooms are very nice. I just can't gush enough over this place. Prices are amazing, especially for this area. The lounge is cozy, with a great view of the gardens. We have stayed in 2 of the rooms so far, and plan to try every room as we go! If you want history, comfort, and to be in the hub of Portsmouth, THIS IS THE PLACE. They are super accommodating, and I love that they text you with any updates or info. Self serve snacks and coffee/tea in a cute entry area, no staff hanging around watching you (but they are only a text away, and very quick to respond!), you can really feel like you have escaped. I highly recommend breakfast in bed! We will be back,...
