UPDATE: 7.27.25 -- My attorney contacted them and they still refused to allow me to stay at AmericanInn. After several phone calls they changed their mind which to me shows that they know I did nothing wrong.

June 13th 2025 we scheduled a stay at AmericanInn in Rapid City, SD. We have stayed at this location multiple times with no issues. This time changed everything for the worst. I had originally written this review in hopes of resolving issues but it missed getting posted for some reason. It will not miss getting posted now. Patrick Mahoney spoke of his CPAP machine being stolen and then found in the possession of housekeeping.
The list goes on but my focus is this 1 star review.
Parties mentioned in this review are Nicole (front desk) & Ally (sp?)(manager).
While searching to verify my review was correctly in place I noticed other 1 star reviews. Jen Hanson spoke of the staff charging guests for Internet which is supposed to be free. Kelvin Last and many others spoke of bed bugs.
Everything was relatively okay until checkout time. My wife had advised me that the shower did not work correctly. I mentioned this to the front desk who explained the way the showers work. My wife's experience and her explanation were not matching. The person helping us was Nicole. Nicole stated that I had previous trouble with her too but I am unaware of any such trouble. Nicole kept going on and on about how she was right even though I attempted to explain why her answer was not sufficient and was shut down numerous times.
Once when as I attempted to explain Nicole said "Stop Stop Stop." I stopped. While I did consider this rude behavior from customer service I hadn't seen anything yet. On another attempt at dialog Nicole actually "shoosed" me. It was like Nicole was the only person who had the right to say anything. As a client I have never experienced being "shoosed" before, nor can I come up with any situation in which that would be considered good customer service even if dealing with an agitated client.
It gets worse. Much worse.
My wife and I have gone through a nightmare of buying a tri-plex. While this review is not part of that situation it very much affects it. We were at the final hour and decided to take a night out because of all the insanity. All was good until my encounter with Nicole. Due to needing funds in the right place for closing we had no intent of using the credit card we had reserved the room with but rather cash that I had in my pocket.
Nicole never asked me permission to put the charge on the card but did so without my permission. When I explained that I needed the reversed due to our closing issues Nicole refused. I advised Nicole that I was not leaving until she corrected the error and Nicole demanded that I leave without even attempting to correct the error.
She then left me standing at the front desk and went into the back room for some reason. I said in a loud voice that this was not acceptable due to closing papers and was ignored. I then advised that if she did not come back I would come into the back room. Still silence, so I proceeded into the backroom and Nicole came out demanding I leave. I advised that I would leave when the account was handled correctly. She refused. I left.
Later that same day I called for the manager who was not in at the time of the abusive irresponsible treatment from Nicole. That is when I was connected to Ally (sp?) and explained the situation. Ally advised that she would investigate which she did. Ally's investigation led to her giving me an additional discount while also advising me that I was not welcome at the establishment.
I was not welcome because I would not accept the abusive treatment from Nicole. I was not welcome because Nicole did not ask if I wanted to use the card on file for payment. Given that I was being "shooshed" by Nicole in this client centric attack I didn't even think to check that she was processing my...
Read moreMy friend made us reservations to stay here at AmericInn by Wyndham, Chamberlain SD. We were attending the ceremonies at the South Dakota Hall of Fame.
When we come to Chamberlain, we like staying at this hotel. The service and the rooms were always superior. After a long drive we were especially looking forward to swimming and hot tub and of course the free delicious breakfast the next day.
Unfortunately on this visit, we were sorely disappointed. Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed that our room wasn’t clean! There was a pile of sand in the corner! And there was written paper on the floor between the beds, perhaps from a previous stay? The floor and the bathroom were dirty and the rugs look like it had not been vacuumed recently. The worst was, when we inspected the bed, and the bed sheets had black crumbs or particles or (bugs?) on the sheets! I went to call the front desk and when I picked up receiver the telephone cord was missing!
We finally got through to the front desk by using our cellphone, we found out there was only one person on duty and she was busy checking people in. She said she would make it down as soon as she could.
After awhile my friend physically went to the front desk to ask to speak to the manager. My friend returned to the room without any results. Almost as soon as my friend came back, there was a knock on the door.
The front desk clerk came and inspected and agreed the room looked dirty, but didn’t have the authority to give us a new room. She was going to call her supervisor as soon as she checked in all the people waiting to be checked in.
Again after another lengthy time, plus it getting late and we were tired. we decided to change to another hotel.
As we were leaving, she came up to us and told us she finally got permission to give us a “better room,” but it was on the second floor! We told her, it was too late, we decided to go to another hotel.
After all that stress and getting checked in to a different hotel, we were too exhausted to even swim or hot tub, my friend discovered she had charges on 2 credit cards! On one she used to make reservations with and the one she swiped when checking in at Americinn!
Immediately my friend called AmericInn she was told there was no record of her ever having a reservation there or that she even checked in! It was very frustrating and stressful and not getting help from all the phone calls she was making. On one of her calls, someone did say he had talked repeatedly to housekeeping to let them know the impact clean rooms had on their ability to service their customers. Instead of relaxing, she ended up being on the phone late in the night with no resolve!
The whole experience was Very unsatisfactory! Later on I heard this hotel changed owners, maybe that’s why we received poor customer service. We will never stay there...
Read moreWe were very excited for this hotel. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. We were scheduled to stay 5 nights.
Check In process was miserable. There was an issue with a lady and her credit card ahead of us. Both front desk agents and the manager were soon working with her leaving quite a pile of us hanging around in the very small lobby waiting for check in. Finally one of the front desk agents broke off and started checking in the rest of us. Once we got up to the front desk they had our reservation incorrect, had us down for 2 rooms vs 1 that we had reserved. So now we were taking both front desk agents to figure that out.
The pool, waterslide and hot tub were open when we checked in but were packed. They had a group in the party room and there had to be 50+ people in the pool area. Too many for the little area and it didn't leave any room for us as hotel guests to be in there. Then the next day the hot tub was broke and drained with an out of order sign. Also there was garbage and food wrappers and cups everywhere, even though there are signs that state no food or drink in the pool. Obviously they don't enforce those rules. I did end up picking up the garbage myself so my kids or myself didn't trip and fall. They also had major issues with pool towels our entire stay.
They do allow dogs, which is fine as we have a dog and love to bring him with us. BUT they had a yippee type dog in a room not too far from ours and it barked non stop all day/night. I called the front desk and they offered to "try" to reach the owner. It didn't help much, the dog stopped for 10 minutes and then would start back up. This place really needs to review their dog policy.
Breakfast was a joke... coffee was cold and not fresh. There was sausage gravy but biscuits were out and not refilled while we were sitting in the breakfast area. The days they had sausage and eggs, the sausage was not fully cooked. The bread and muffins were always running low to empty. The only "good" option was the waffles we could make ourselves. We've stayed at many AmericInn's and could not believe the breakfast this one offered was considered acceptable. When I said something to the front desk attendant about the cold coffee she said they've been busy and cannot please everyone.
Due to the bad service and the dog barking all day and night, we ended up leaving a day early. None of us were getting a decent night's sleep due to listening to a dog barking and we had enough. The front desk was unable to check us out early or offer any kind of compensation. Since they do not care to take care of their guests, we will...
