12/4/23 Update: We went late. The salad bar looked and was still fresh and clean as was the soup area. All the utensils I had and dishware I picked up was clean - well done!
My husband had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. He said it was good. I had the 2-piece fried chicken dinner with a small delicious sweet potato with real butter and cinnamon on the side.
Samantha was our waitress and took our orders and served us well. She reiterated what the menu said, that the chicken would take about 15 more minutes. Another waitress and the manager backed her up for drinks.
We enjoyed talking to the staff. My husband and I always consider visiting with the wait staff and management part of the dining experience, and we enjoyed our meal and time with them.
We were on our way home after visiting the Badlands, Custer State Park, and some other natural parks and decided to eat breakfast before leaving town. My husband looked at a few descriptions on Google and chose Millstone and Perkins. I said, "No" to Perkins.
Millstone's soup and salad bars were already set up a little after 10. They serve old-fashioned oatmeal until 11, and I considered getting that until I looked at the menu. There is a large assortment from which to choose.
When I read the description of the "cream cakes," they sounded yummy. Miss Inez, our waitress said they were fluffy and light. I chose the pigs in a cake, three extra large pancakes wrapped around nice sized sausages, not like Hormel Little Sizzlers, think more like the size of a hot dog. They smelled like vanilla, oh, my goodness, they smelled good!
I smeared real butter over one, poured some sugar-free syrup on, and cut in with just a fork. Yes, they are that tender, but the butter knife helps. I washed two down with good hot decaf coffee and took the third with me in a little to-go box we stored in the cooler.
We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. The bathroom was very clean, and I appreciate the thoughtful touch of a trash can being placed near the door, so I can use my paper towel to open the door and then dispose of the towel. I heard two other ladies say...
Read moreStopped at this place as we were passing thru.... I saw the reviews and honestly everyone was right. It was a good choice and my God for decent prices.
Service: this goes put to our server..I CANT REMEMBER HER NAME!!! SORRY!!... we were the couple that came in around 7ish last night [9/29] if you walk in we were sat at the left side of the restaurant opposite of the salad bar. In the far left corner table in front of another booth with a couple in it who had shakes. My hubby and I are the ones from California!!! You were awesome! You were attentive and every quality a server should have you had. But genuine kindness and friendliness was the top of that list.... thank you for that!
Order: I ordered the 3 piece chicken dinner with mash potatoes and my husband got the steak with mashers. Both meals came with the slad bar. I got the salad and cheesy potato soup. The soup was very bland but I added some salt and pepper and it was perfect my husband had to do the same for his ham and bean soup. But both was good. My chicken was perfectly cooked and sòoooooooo juicy. The breading on the chicken was perfectly crispy and seasoned. It was honestly the best fried chicken I had at any place. My husband said his steak was really good and seasoned well. He didn't talk much because he was enjoying it. It's literally homestyle cooking at a sit down restaurant and sometimes when ur in the road that's all you want.
Atmosphere: its such a quaint and old homey small town diner style kind of restaurant.... whoa! That's alot of adjectives. I don't know how else to describe it. It kinda gives you that feeling that someone's grandma owns it. Haha I don't mean that in a bad way.
Anyways thanks for the homestyle cookin'!!! And the really...
Read moreThis was my second working layover here in Rapid City, South Dakota. It would have been a whole year since I've visited. Me and my bestie/ working flight attendant on this 4 day mid-August 2024 flt sequence decided to take the recommendation of a few of the hotel workers and shuttle driver at our overnight hotel here in the nearby area. We were greeted upon arrival and quickly sat down at our preference of a booth or table. Shortly after being led to our dining table, a very nice new waitress, Wendy, sweetly approaches to introduce herself as a newer hire and offers us information about the dinner specials. I ordered the baked cod that comes w/ coleslaw and chose the mashed potatoes and creamy white gravy side. For a little upcharge of $5 and some change, I opted to add the soup w/ salad bar option. My fellow FA/ bestie ordered a 2 grilled porkchop dinner w/ the soup and side salad bar. The food was tasty and enjoyable. Our waitress provided excellent customer service and was a true delight. After we were both pretty stuffed, we asked Wendy what she would recommend to try for a dessert. She recommended the tripple chocolate cake w/ a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delicious and very generous size. All in all, it was a great dining experience. Definitely recommend stopping by and giving a look over and trying for yourself. Until the next time I'm in this area to try the other food options and specials. Mahalo (Thank you) Millstone Fam Restaurant staff, owners, cooks, and Ms. Wendy. We look forward...
