Here are some positives about the hotel: The property was very clean and new. Most of the staff were very friendly. Wonderful lounges and pool deck. Great amenities in rooms, comfortable beds. Additional security for hotel floor access by scanning keycard in elevator.
Unfortunately, a long list of dislikes.
1.Do not get the breakfast package with the hotel through a third-party site. They only allow a $30 voucher p/day and breakfast cost our family of 4 over $100. They did comp me any addition $30/day because I inquired in why my reservation says ‘breakfast included’ but goodness that barely covered one day of breakfast. The food was good, but not $100 good. Who pays that for breakfast? We never ate at another restaurant in the hotel after that morning. My kids only ate side dishes too, oatmeal and fruit. There are other reviews about this and the hotel has done absolutely nothing to fix it.
Park in a lot within a block of the hotel. Many are covered with 24 monitoring and in/out privileges. We paid less than $20/day for the lot across the road. The hotel charges $60/day! That is just robbery.
Do not bother to get a river view room. The view was very disappointing. Our hotel room was on the backside of the hotel, but there are dozens of rooms on the pool/side view of the hotel with a bit better river view. I’m not sure why we were not given one of those rooms, but I inquired at check-in and the young woman said, “ we are not on the river walk. We are a block or two away.” Then, why advertise it as a River View? We payed an additional premium. I inquired at check in about lounge access and if I could see the lounge before decided on upgrading. I was denied. However, being an IHG club member, I was offered an upgrade to a suite for an additional $250/night. A quick calculation on the price advertised told me that was NOT a deal. It was not a great first impression and the attendant at the front desk was curt, condescending, and did not represent the Intercontinental, IHG brand. When I checked in on weekday at 5pm there was literally no one but the guest attendant in the lobby.
Hotel room was horribly hot at nighttime making it difficult to sleep. However, the temperature was fine during the day. They had 3 motion sensors that were green orbs in the room and a large red circle above the dresser which I assumed was their router. Anytime they sensed movement, they would flash and circle. I assume this had something to do with temperature control and security, but made me uncomfortable and the lights were distracting while trying to sleep.
The area is away from the riverwalk. About 2-3 blocks and the area is not as safe. We visit San Antonio frequently and always felt it was fairly safe and family oriented, even in the early evening hours. There was a noticeable difference when walking around the hotel in the evening hours and a Greyhound bus stop as its neighbor.
I never write this type of lengthy review, but I don’t want other hard working families deceived. I was very excited to visit this hotel and was swayed by all the positive reviews. I’m happy for those people that had a positive experience, but because our family visits frequently, I can confidently tell you there are so many other beautiful hotels on the Riverwalk that have more amenities, customer orientated service, prime locations, and are far more affordable. I felt so disappointed for myself and family. If someone at checkout would have asked how are experience was, I would have told them. No one did. This was by far one of the most overpromised and undelivered experiences at a...

Read moreThe green lights of the motion sensors in the ceiling of the room were very annoying during the night. When you moved, they went off almost like strobe lights. The one in the bathroom was the worst. It would bounce off the shower glass and reflect in the mirror multiple times because of it and it would be almost like a severe strobe light. This can be very bad for those with brain injuries or epilepsy. I recommend the hotel consider replacing them with motion sensors that do not have any light at all.
Also, on Friday afternoon, a gentleman with the cleaning crew opened the room door while I was alone and working in the room. He did not knock. I heard some clicking at the door and got up to see what was going on, but he was already opening the door before I got that far in the room. I kept the door from opening all the way and he said "check out?". I said "no, tomorrow." He then said "today." I said, "no, tomorrow". He said he would check with management. I then closed the door and locked it. When my husband returned to the room, he used the room phone to tell management about the incident. Additionally, when we went downstairs, we told a couple people at the desk about it in person. Mr. Anthony Huembes offered 5,000 points to my IHG account and a free night in the future. Both of them were very concerned about the incident as protocol was not followed and if I had been asleep, or showering, or changing, this could have been much worse. The care of the staff and their concern was very much appreciated.
The bartender on Wednesday night was FANTASTIC! I do not know her name, but she made some of the best drinks we have ever had at a hotel bar.
The coffee bar was also very good. The coffee was smooth and the staff made it exactly as ordered. The food was also very good.
The first floor restaurant had a nice atmosphere but the chairs were unacceptable. My husband and I were unable to sit in them as they were WAY TOO small for us. We sat at a bench side-by-side. While this is fine, it does not make for intimate conversation since we are not eye-to-eye. Also, the service was VERY slow and there was hardly anyone there on Saturday morning. The food was not good considering the price we had to pay. Over $70 before tip is extreme for a breakfast in a hotel. It is just not worth it.
The care and concern the staff had was FANTASTIC though!! Everyone was so kind and took awesome care with their work. We were there for an anniversary and they sent up strawberries and wine. It made for a special moment for us. The valet staff was kind as well, but slow to respond at times. We had to go find someone a couple times. But all in all, it was a good weekend for us.
Also, the room we were in had a WONDERFUL view of the skyline westward. The view was amazing and we got to watch a beautiful sunset for 2 of the nights we were there. It made for a very enjoyable time in...
