We were in the area for the eclipse and were looking for 2 nights in San Antonio.||Decent city centre hotels were just insanely priced, so we decided to stay here. It proved a great decision.||The city centre was easily reached by car (about 15 mins), or Uber if you wanted a drink (which would have been more than covered by the savings we made).||Staff were very good, subject to one exception I will detail later (for the benefit of management).||The rooms were a good size and quiet – something unlikely to have been said for those hotels around the river walk area. We did the river walk, as you kind of have to when in San Antonio, and whilst it was good, we said at the time that we were glad we hadn't chosen that as a base, due to the crowds and lively nature of the area. Yes, it was a bit of a pain to have to spend 25 mins travelling back, including getting to the car, but honestly we weren't bothered too much, particularly as the Marriott was a lot more tranquil.||The pool was a complete bonus. We knew it had one before booking, but whilst it backed up onto the main access road to the hotels around there, it was still in a nice, sunny spot, and gave us a couple of nice, downtime hours late one afternoon.||Normally, we don't eat in hotels as we find the offering over-priced and poor, and the Marriott has many driveable options nearby. They are not easily walkable, despite the relatively short distance, due to the local road network, but the hotel provides a courtesy shuttle, which will also pick you up.||However, on our first night, having driven all the way from our previous hotel in Dallas and then from where we watched the eclipse, we decided to eat in, and found it was good quality and reasonably priced. Also, Jaime, who ran the bar and associated food area was excellent. Especially his service and interaction with customers.||Having had such good service from Jaime, on our second night, we decided to eat in the restaurant. This could not have been more of a contrast. We spent so long waiting for any form of service, we decided to sack it off and ordered an Uber eats instead.||To give you an idea of how bad it was, we waited… and waited… and waited, before deciding to do the Uber eats. But then I still had time to sign up, figure out how it worked, (having never used it before), choose our meals, and then order, all before the waitress even attended to us. When she finally deigned herself to saunter over, we then told her we'd had enough and already ordered from Uber eats. Unsurprisingly, she didn't seem bothered, let alone, offered an apology. Also, again unsurprisingly, if that sort of service was the norm, the restaurant didn't even have that many people in it to rush her off her feet.||We have also had another disappointment. With us having to get back to Austin airport we rushed out in the morning without properly checking our bill. (I know, I know – it looked reasonable and so I didn't check it line by line as I was in a rush). When we got home it appears there is an overcharge on our bill of about $10 for an item we didn't have. I've raised it with the hotel, but sadly, 2 weeks later, despite saying they would, they still haven't got back to me.||It's a shame about the last 2 issues, because overall we had a good stay and were glad for our trip to San Antonio that we had decided to stay at the Marriott as opposed to a...
Read moreLocation gets 4 star because of the proximity to the airport and restaurants surrounding it. Room was a bit underwhelming because it was kind of dirty. There was so much dust and hair behind the mattress/headboard area, you cannot miss it! We are not very high maintenance when it comes to this because we understand that they might be short staffed and we were only staying 2 nights, so no big deal!
Now, the one where this hotel gets a 1 star..has to do with the staff. I was really looking forward to staying here because the day before we checked in, I spoke with someone named Beatrice and she was the SWEETEST lady I have ever spoken to! I expected that great customer service experience when we checked in but it just fell FLAT. Underwhelming and honestly, if this was our first stay at a Marriott, we probably wouldn't even consider staying at another Marriott ever again based on this experience!!
The front desk lady, I believe was named Jessica? ZERO customer service skills. Not only gives this cold vibe but also rude when addressing her co worker. Not sure if she is having an off night, but the way she answers our questions was cold. First of, I reserved a king size room back in Feb. She said all they had was 2 queens or a king accessible. I picked the 2 queens because I will leave the accessible to those who needs it more. 2nd, I asked if they are able to put the points into my bonvoy acct because I have booked it outside of the Marriott website and she abruptly stopped me and said, no because my name isnt the one on the reservation, it was my husbands name on it, she looked at me like I was dumb. We have stayed in so many Marriotts before and this has never been a problem before..so I said ok thats fine, I'll call Bonvoy and double check with them. 3rd, I asked if there is a breakfast option and she, again abruptly said "no, sorry unfortunately your reservation doesn't include breakfast" She didn't even offer us an option to purchase breakfast to be included in our stay, instead she sighed loudly and gave us our room key like she wants us out of her face already. At this point, we were tired already from our long day of flying into San Antonio and just wanted to shower. Again, I said I'll deal with this later on. 4th, I noticed that we were charged the high speed internet fee when were not supposed to because of our bonvoy status. We decided to stop by the front desk to ask them about this problem. When we did, it was thankfully another person who helped us...and was able to note that we shouldn't get charged...we were so glad to speak with someone else BUT she came out out of nowhere and started lingering and looking over on what he was trying to do to help us..like..hello? Go away and mind your own business! We were there to spend time with our friend who was retiring after serving the Navy for 23yrs. We didn't want anything to spoil our short stay there but she just left a very bitter taste in our mouths. We hated going back to the hotel and seeing her face so we ended up entering the back door and dodging the main entrance. We are normally not like this! My husband and I travel extensively all over the world and never have we met a person like this..ever! Anyway, I guess theres always a first! If I can give the customer service of this hotel a...

So I've stayed many times over the years at Marriott properties in San Antonio including when this hotel used to have ancient lobby, limited parking, and rooms from the Roman times. Is it worth it now?
Well I can tell you a few observations coming from a long-time Marriott guy.
First off, the parking is now plentiful and it's very close to the airport but your really don't hear it as you're kinda out of the flight path. In the old days they had very limited parking up front and you had to go to the end of the hotel and park in a parking garage and walk back to the lobby. No more...plentiful parking spots in an expanded property and I witnessed a lot of security walking the lot. As you enter the hotel, the lobby, M Lounge, and restaurant and bar areas are all nicely appointed with new furniture and decor. It really does look nice.
The M Lounge is kinda skimpy though on snacks and the coffee maker had mugs that were to small for the presets. Hot choco tasted like slightly choco flavored hot water. But there are your standard sodas, water, etc. and very nice morning buffet/made to order omelettes for M Lounge members. The elevators are still on the opposite side of the hotel but no big deal. The elevators ironically look alot like to old ones and not fully updated.
The rooms? They're fairly nice. As you can see by the pics. But it's the annoyances that kinda get to you. Towels that are sometimes dirty/haired, and the service at times was either slow or fast depending on the person you call (took 4 requests to get new towels).
The rooms had plenty of USB plugs and great lighting. Our King room mattress was quite comfortable. How does it compare to other Marriott rooms. Comparable... average but nice.
The AC in our room would come to very loud clank whenever it stopped. Our toilet was some new fangled low water high pressure system...which never flushed quite fully. Had the repairman come in to fix it...didn't really didn't change anything and he proceeded to dirty up the toilet and mark up the floor mats with black shoe marks/prints....then he left it that way. 😂. Normally this would warrant a 3 star review but the hotel has something's going for it like a great location, newer lobby and lounges, a bar, large eating areas, nicely appointed rooms...it's a good hotel...they just need to tweak things since the recent renovation.
In the end, this is much nicer hotel than the old Marriott. If you can get a good deal
