3-star quality and customer service while charging you for 5-star. It seems like they cut corners wherever possible and try to rely on their glory of yesteryear while failing to deliver on the basics.
We’ve been coming here for years and this past trip was lacking in everything. This place needs to replace its management and properly train their employees in proper customer service for a resort.
Just so you don’t think I’m criticizing while not offering specifics, please read the rest of this review.
Pros: it is in a superb location in San Diego and offers beachfront bungalows. This is a unique offering in a terrific city. The location raises this review from a 2-star to a 3-star. The only other pro I can think of was that the pizza delivery for room service was quite fast.
Cons (this will be lengthy and please look at the photos): The prices on the beachfront bungalows have doubled in 2 years. It was about $1300/night in North Cove and the room came with single ply toilet paper. Don’t you think you could splurge for the 2-ply? The cleaning staff was terrible. When we first checked into our room I managed to step on a previous guest’s large clipped toe nail with my bare foot. I wasn’t going to pass too much blame on the cleaning staff for one incident, but when they ‘cleaned’ our room the one time during our stay they didn’t even bother to clean the toilet. There was also a patch of dog hair stuck to the wall in the bathroom which was there when we arrived and was never cleaned (see photo). 1-star for cleaning quality.
The coffee machine in the room did not work. You would hit the brew button and only an ounce of coffee would be dispensed.
Overall, the management has not invested in the upkeep. The paint was bubbling in our bathroom and part of the door frame was missing (see photos). Also, the gardeners let the landscaping deteriorate and the fresh ponds were starting to be overwhelmed with algae (see photos).
The general customer service was lacking. They put up a very very bright security light across North Cove from us. When they turned it on at night it would shine right in our eyes when we were trying to enjoy the evening. We called the front desk and we’re told ‘oh, yeah, we get a lot of complaints’. We didn’t ask them to turn off the security lights; we just wanted them rotated so they wouldn’t blind us. After a few nights of some other patrons’ frustrations resulting in the light being unplugged the security finally rotated the light out of our eyes. If you’ve been getting consistent complaints don’t you think it is prudent to make an adjustment?
Overall, the general attitude of the staff was a major shortcoming and result of our discontent. Normally at a resort the staff would go out of their way to greet you and make sure you’re enjoying your stay. Overall, it felt like we were an imposition to their daily routine. We asked one of the guys driving around in one of the passenger golf carts for a quick ride down the street and he told us he was busy. When we asked to get back in our room 3-min after we checked out because we forgot something, we finally got the housekeeping supervisor to let us in after waiting 15 min for security which. Ever showed up. These are just two examples of many poor instances of poor customer service.
One of the exceptionally frustrating items was their utter disregard for the cleanliness of a ‘pack-and-play’ for infants/toddlers. After they picked them up from peoples’ rooms they transported them around with the trash (see photo). I saw this twice in two days. Our toddler used one of these and it disgusts me that you would treat a child’s bed with such disrespect for cleanliness.
In the end, I don’t know if I’ll go here again. This is sad to say from a long-time customer. Maybe I’ll give them one more try, but they really dropped the ball on everything over and over during our stay. I’d like to say that they can do better, but the management needs to make some drastic changes for improvements to...
Read moreStaying at Paradise Point and having a wedding here was highly disappointing to say the least.
The rooms are in desperate need of renovation and not worth the high rates. Most of my guests complained about the poor service, unclean rooms, and foul odor in the area. My husband and I stayed in a beachside bungalow. You think you’re paying for location but you're surrounded by dirty, smelly marine water and walkways covered in seagull poop. The bungalows are tiny and outdated and can't accommodate a bridal party; taking pictures inside the suite was not an option. Paradise Point didn’t show us the room until after we signed a contract. Additionally, there is no security at the beach so there are people out partying late at night. Our Paradise Point representative, Sydney, even told us that we are free to be on the beach as late as we want since it’s unpatrolled. It’s strange that the staff are aware of this issue and even promote it. My husband and I were unable to sleep the night before and the night of our wedding due to the noise. I wouldn’t recommend families bring their children for safety reasons, the dirty waters, and the endless bird droppings.
On the night of our wedding the ballroom was unbearably hot. We asked staff multiple times to turn up the AC, but they never did. Most of my guests were outside because they were too uncomfortable.
The hotel is extremely wasteful with food. Beforehand they informed me the time that all food would need to be taken away, but reassured me that there would be ample time for guests to get seconds. However, in reality the staff were extremely aggressive at clearing plates from the tables even when guests were still working on their meals. The staff did not provide extra plates at the buffet tables so there was no way for guests to get seconds. This resulted in excessive food waste. To think of how much food was thrown away, how much they charged for food, and how hungry guests still were leaves me disgusted. They also got rid of our wedding cake even though we requested to have just one slice reserved for us. On that note, don't trust them to prepare a decent meal for your guests. The cuisine was subpar even though I provided numerous notes following a tasting.
In regards to the open bar, we prepaid enough to allow our guests to drink abundantly. Once we reached our prepaid limit we told multiple employees to close out our tab yet we were slammed with an additional bill following our wedding. We went back and forth for a month with staff contesting the bar and other charges that we were never made aware of before or during the wedding. The incompetent staff at Paradise Point provided us with an unclear document with charges that did not match previous invoices. They gave us the run around for weeks while we tried to dissect the mismatching estimates/banquet event order/final invoice. The staff made no effort to delineate where the final balance came from. They argued that a substantial charge came from the bar alone, which we proved to be erroneous as above. When we finally figured out that there was a hidden service charge applied to the venue rental fee (which was not included in the final BEO), Sydney acknowledged that they did not outline this charge in previous documents but stated it’s something they’ll do in the future. Instead of simply waiving this fee, they tried to offer us a complimentary 2-night stay. Absolutely ridiculous. On top of that, although they originally sent us a link to make the final payment, Paradise Point charged our credit card DURING the back and forth dispute without informing us.
In the end we are frustrated, angry, and saddened that we dealt with this. I strongly urge you to AVOID this tourist trap at all costs. I've stayed at multiple SD hotels and now am a local who can attest to more favorable alternatives. Hope this helps. (Other representatives who were of absolutely no help to us on our endless email thread were Chris, Jolly,...
Read morePlease read the reviews! Thinking that maybe those people were just unlucky, I took the chance and booked a weekend getaway for my family anyways only to realize that everything the poor reviews said were true. Considering the exorbitant price we paid (we stayed at the most expensive room, the bayside bungalow with cove view) we expected a far better experience.
Our room was really dirty with sand all over the floors, the sink was clogged and very slow draining, and there were little spiders and insects crawling on our beds. Having a two year old playing all over the floor, I shouldn't have to worry about her getting sick. One of the nights while I was washing the baby's bottles, there was a dripping of water going down the side of the sink and when I looked down, I saw a giant brown caterpillar eating something on the floor next to my right foot. It was horrifying since it was next to our things. Another time as I was sitting on the bed where my daughter was sleeping, I saw a giant spider crawling next to her! We spent the weekend catching bugs in our rooms, which was not the relaxing experience I was hoping to have at a four star resort. Maybe if we were camping in the mountains, I would expect it but not here. We did not enter our rooms with the classic AHH feeling of a refreshing and clean 4 star hotel. Instead, when we arrived home yesterday evening, we were never more glad to be home! Which is sad since it was supposed to be the opposite. Never did I have to worry about bringing unwanted pests home in our bags from a hotel!
As far as the hotel room itself, it was very old, nothing was fancy or gave us a wow reaction. It's not kid friendly at all, especially when you have a baby and toddler. The pack and play they gave my daughter was so uncomfortable, the mat didn't even fit the playard, so that's why she ended up sleeping on the bed with the spiders. We had 4 adults in the room but not enough pillows or sheets.
Food wise, the resort restaurants did not stand out. I recommend you drive out to eat else where. The view was nice, but when you travel you'd want delicious food to give a lasting impression. They gave me a card upon check in for 15% off Tidal restaurant, but I forgot to show it to the waiter since he asked to charge the bill to our room. When I remembered it at check out I told the front desk and they said nothing can be done.
For EV charging, there were only two Tesla charging stations, which were taken up by guests overnight and the entire day. So my husband had to stake out and finally he was able to charge our car right before we left.
We are not the type to complain, and even with all the bugs, my husband said we can remove them ourselves. Since it was a short stay we decided not to make a big scene. However, when we got back home I decided to call the resort to let them know of our experience so they can do better for future guests. The response I received was nothing short of your standard "ok thanks for letting us know and moving on with our day" type of response. So as far as customer service, not great either. You can tell from the responses here on the review page too. Please see all the other reviews!
The one good thing about this resort though, is the massage at the spa. It was probably the best massage I've ever received!! I would come back for this.
Unfortunately, Paradise Point failed to deliver even the most basic standards of quality and customer service. I strongly advise potential guests to reconsider staying at this hotel and explore alternative accommodations that prioritize cleanliness and guest satisfaction.
Update: Hotel management reached out to me promptly and personally regarding my concerns. They were very kind, accommodating, and willing to hear constructive criticism to better their hotel accommodations. It made me feel heard and understood! Thank you...
