Our family (two adults and one child) stayed two nights at the Mithila in October 2023. We read the reviews before booking and decided to take a chance on a 'budget' hotel nearer to the heart of the city. It was a very charming experience. The building is old (which I personally found delightful) but clean. The front entrance is locked 24/7 which made us feel better about the hotel's location. It has a very cool antique cage elevator that makes one think of days gone by. We booked through a third party site and had no issues checking in. We stayed in a family room with a bunk bed which our kid loved. The metal bunk bed was a bit squeaky though. The bedding was clean and soft and the mattresses were comfortable for two nights' rest. There was also a surprisingly big closet which was great for our luggage. The free wifi worked well for our kid to stream on the tablet. The room had a tv but the cable wasn't really working that well while we were there. Not a huge issue as we were out and about playing tourist. There was an issue with the lights turning on and off on their own at night - maybe there is a resident ghost? Or maybe just strange wiring. The bathroom was small but clean and had a shower. Based on other reviews we expected that there would be more unhoused people in the neighborhood but we saw no more than in any other city. There is a cute little grocery store a few steps away, a delicious breakfast spot across the road and a yummy sandwich shop down the street. The hotel is also close to public transit and we actually were able to walk to Chinatown no problem. We never really felt unsafe walking to and from the hotel - even at night time. We had to check out quite early (3am) and were able to drop off our key cards at the front desk without any issues. We booked the hotel knowing it is not a five star resort and if you are looking for value for your dollar this really is the hotel for you. We would definitely stay again next time we visit...

Our experience: We booked our hotel on our way to SF and briefly read the reviews on Mithila Hotel (big no no!)We got there on Wednesday night at around 6 o'clock and checked in. The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and gave us a few tips as to parking and places to keep ourselves out from at night. Walking up toour room (3rd floor) there was a very unpleasant smell that came from the entrance all the way up to the 3rd floor hall. The smell lasted the entire two nights we we were there. When we open our room to the hotel it was not a shocker to see what we were walking into: small room & bathroom, 50 year old carpet that is lightly vacuumed, shower curtains with mold on the bottom and sheets that I did not dare to sleep on or with. It is definitely not a hotel in which you want to stay with your family especially if you have little ones that like to touch anything and everything. I had my kids walking the little time we were in the room with socks and showering with sandals. We would arrive to our hotel late at night and wake up early in the morning to get out of there. I posted up on top on pros: that this hotel offers free continental breakfast, though we love free breakfast at hotels and love to save that money for lunch and dinner we never though twice about having breakfast at the Mithila Hotel. Our best advice is this: book yourself a hotel in which you can rest comfortably (you will need it) and that you actually don't mind eating there and hanging out, or sleeping in for that matter. Not being able to get the adequate rest really knocked us off of our horse. Being cheap can cause you a bit...

I am not the one that complains about a Hotel I know certain places aren't 5 star resorts, so you shouldn't rate them as such. Some places get bad ratings bc people believe that a 2 or 3 star place should become the HYATT once they check in. That's not how it works. Now, saying all of that, let get right into!
This place is a 0 star hotel, repeat 0 star hotel. I wish I could give it a 0 but I cant. The only thing I liked about this place was the size of the room. The room size was really good for an old hotel san Francisco. we also got a bathroom inside our room. Windows are dirty inside and out, carpet was dirty, floor was uneven and hold bubbles. The bed was dirty & frig worked just a little bit. It got cool a little bit. Just enough to store water, I guess. If you wanted a cold Coke, beer ,Tea etc etc that might be hard.
Staff doesn't care too much. Building has no ramp for wheelchairs strollers etc. Its about 10 steps outside/sidewalk area that you will have to use to carry luggage up to enter. Elevator is as big as a phone booth.
I did like that the Hotel had a pizza place directly across the street & a neighborhood grocery store that is right on the corner of the block, 60 to 70 ft from the hotel. Another thing I didn't like was this Hotel is about 5 blocks from being in a great location. Not speaking of it being in a rundown area bc the area is ok. I'm saying not that far walking to be quickly near all the shops and restaurants.
This place is a EASY...
